Evaluation of Nile Delta-Mediterranean Sea Conjunction Using GPS, Satellite-Based Gravity and Altimetry Datasets

Sinking of the Nile Delta region of Egypt is one of urgent issues to be investigated due to its vital importance to numerous perspectives such as economic, environmental and social impact on the whole Egyptian territory. This contribution represents one of the project outcomes entitled “Evaluation of Nile Delta Sinking Hypothesis Using the Global Positioning System (GPS), Tide Gauge and Satellite Altimetry and Gravity Techniques” that has been funded by the Science & Technology Development FUND (STDF), Egypt in the period from 2013 till 2017. To detect the rates of the horizontal and vertical movements, three main geodetic techniques;Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of Delta region, time-varying gravity models of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission to monitor the temporal changes over the delta regions and satellite altimetry time series have been used. Our findings regarding the GPS technique show that the northern part of the Nile Delta region suffers from clear subsidence especially at the eastern and western side as represented by Port Said, Mansoura, Gamalyia, Alexandria and Edfena stations. The central part as well as the surrounding areas of Nile Delta suffers from clear uplift as represented by Tanta, Damnhour and Hamoul stations. Satellite gravity results show erosion rates of the conjunction part of Nile Delta and Mediterranean contact, especially at its eastern (Port Said surrounding areas) and western (Alexandria surrounding areas) parts. As we go inland to the southern part of the Nile Delta, the temporal gravity variations pattern decreases showing that the Delta subsidence follows the regular subsidence pattern, except that for the northern contact part of the Delta to the Mediterranean Sea. This is also supported by satellite altimetry missions which shows a continuously rising rate of the Mediterranean Sea level as detected from the Saral/AltiKa mission.

Prognostic Value of N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide in Acute Pulmonary Embolism

Patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) have a high risk of death and it is important to recognize factors associated with high mortality. N-Terminal pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-pro BNP) has recently emerged as a promising biomarker for risk assessment in acute pulmonary embolism (PE). The aim of this study is to detect the in hospital prognostic value of NT-pro BNP in patients with acute (PE). Methods: This study included 64 patients diagnosed as (PE) with the mean age of 59.1 ± 16.5 years, 40 patients of them (62.5%) were male. All patients were subjected to 12 leads ECG. X-ray chest, laboratory tests including D-Dimer, troponin I, NT-pro BNP, Doppler ultrasound for the venous system of both lower limbs, Echocardiograhy and 64 multislices CT pulmonary angiography. Results: According to the admission level of NT-pro BNP our patients were divided into two groups: group I included 22 patients with normal NT-pro BNP (less than 300 pg/ml), and group II included 42 patients with elevated NT-pro BNP (more than or equal 300 pg/ml). Patients in group II were found to have a significantly higher incidence of heart failure (28.6% Vs 4.6%, p = 0.025), impaired kidney function (serum creatinine was 1.7 ± 0.6 Vs 1.1 ± 0.2, p = 0.018), tachypnea (85.7% Vs 54.5%, p = 0.006) and cardiogenic shock (26.2% Vs 0%, p = 0.014) but a significantly lower incidence of chest pain (21.4% Vs 45.5%, p = 0.04) and lower left ventricular ejection fraction (51.3% ± 16.9% Vs 67.3% ± 12.8%, p = 0.043) compared to group I. There were a significantly higher treatment with thrombolytic therapy (35.7% Vs 9.1%, p=0.021) and positive inotropics (35.71% Vs 4.55%, p = 0.006) in group II compared to group I. Also group II had a higher need for mechanical ventilation (26.12% Vs 4.55%, p = 0.04) and a longer in hospital stay (19.5 ± 10.3 Vs 5.3 ± 4.5, p = 0.001) than group I. 本文通过计算预测光学性能的方法表征在光学系统组装和外界环境因素影响下的光学系统灵敏度。该方法即通过调制传递函数来表征静态机械应力对光学物镜性能的影响。采用光学干涉仪对经过加工、组装且存在机械应力的光学物镜进行测试,并比较实验调制传递函数与计算模拟分析的调制传递函数。结果表明,计算结果与实验结果相符,证实了本文方法的有效性。

There has been an increasing interest in marine oysters (order: Petridae) in recent years because their numbers are declining in many parts of the world and also because they are used as monitors of pollution. The present study describes the microscopic structure of gills as viewed by light and electron microscopy in two locations selected in Alexandria coast, Eastern Harbor (E.H.) and El Asafra. The specimens in the E.H. represent the presence of extracellular mineralized granules.

A Modified Cold Molybdenum Cathode Penning Ion Source

In this paper, design and construction of a modified cold molybdenum cathode Penning ion source was described. It consists of copper cylindrical anode with two cone ends and two movable cold molybdenum cathodes. The two cathodes were placed symmetrically at two ends of the anode. The modifications were decrease the length of the cylindrical anode to 4 cm instead of 6 cm, transform the copper emission electrode shape from plate of 40 mm length, 25 mm width and 2 mm thickness to disc of 20 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness and transform the inner uncovered area of the emission electrode from slit of 30 mm length and 10 mm width to disc of 5 mm diameter. The copper emission electrode was placed in the middle of the cylindrical anode and has aperture in the center of different diameters. Faraday cup was placed at different distances from the emission electrode aperture. The electrical discharge and the output ion beam characteristics of the modified ion source were measured at different pressures using argon gas. It was found that the optimum operating conditions of the modified ion source are; anode-cathode distance equal to 6 mm, emission electrode aperture diameter equal to 2.5 mm and emission electrode aperture, Faraday cup distance equals 3 cm. The effect of axial samarium cobalt permanent magnet of intensity equal to 300 Gauss on the discharge characteristics of the ion source was determined.

Temporal and Spatial Effects on Some Physiological Parameters of the Bivalve Lithophaga lithophaga(Linnaeus, 1758) from Coastal Regions of Alexandria, Egypt

The date clam, Lithophaga lithophaga is a popular edible bivalve. It was collected from three different locations (Abo-Quir, Miami and El-Mex) along the coast of Alexandria-Egypt to determine the effect of two heavy metals as copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd). The three organs were selected: gill, mantle and digestive gland. The enzymatic change is correlated with the concentration of metals. The present results suggest that Miami water is less polluted with Cu and Cd as compared to the two other locations. The physicochemical parameters are not significant among the three locations. Water of Abu-Quir and El-Max may be hazardous to bivalves. The order of levels of Cu and Cd was: gill > digestive gland > mantle. The present study illustrated that, in Abu Quir, there was a high positive correlation between Cd and Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) as r = 0.969 whereas Cu and SDH as r = -0.91.

Effect of Trichoderma harzianumin Combination with Fungicides in Controlling Gray Mould Disease (Botrytis cinerea) of Strawberry

The effects of biofungicide formula containing the biocontrol agent Trichoderma harzianum (Jn14) as wettable powder in combination with the fungicides pyrimethanil and a mixture of cyprodinil and flydioxonil on Botrytis cinerea of strawberry in vitro, in vivo and in greenhouse were studied. The pathogen B. cinerea was more affected in vitro by low concentrations of the fungicides tested above 0.4 μg·ml-1 than the bioagent T. harzianum (Jn14). The later was almost insensitive to pyrimethanil. In the same direction, gray mould disease severity on strawberry detached leaves and whole plants was reduced up to 89% by the tested fungicides, compared to the control, while the application of T. harzianum (Jn14) alone reduced disease severity up to 45% on strawberry detached leaves, compared to the control. In the integrated control approach, the combination of T. harzianum (Jn14) with higher concentrations of the tested fungicides (ED50) completely inhibited strawberry gray mould disease severity in pots and the greenhouse.

Percutaneous Balloon Compression and Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation in Patients with Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia: Management Outcome

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by paroxysmal, shock-like, stabbing, recurrent episodes of pain localized in the distribution area of one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. The Initial approach for treating trigeminal neuralgia consists of pharmacological therapy. Many patients experience initial pain relief with pharmacological therapy;however, most of those patients eventually undergo surgery. Patients and Methods: In this descriptive prospective study, we evaluate the efficiency and safety of percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) and percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in treating patients with typical idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. This study includes 21 patients (divided into two groups, PBC = 15 patients and RFA = six patients) who met our inclusion and exclusion criteria, from May 2018 to April 2019, with a follow-up period of six months. Results: At one month postoperative follow-up, all patients in both groups were pain-free. At six months postoperative follow-up, in group 1 (PBC), 14 (95.24%) patients were pain-free, while in group 2 (RFA) all patients remained pain-free. The most common encountered postoperative complications are masticatory muscles weakness (Four patients in PBC group, and one patient in RFA group) and facial hypothesia (12 patients in PBC group and four patients in RFA group). Conclusions: In our study, patients with trigeminal neuralgia were not controlled by drug treatment, but percutaneous balloon compression and percutaneous radiofrequency ablation proved to be very effective treatment options, with no major complications.

A Comparative Analysis for a Novel Irrigation Method: Partial Rootzone Drying

Partial Rootzone Drying (PRD) is an irrigation technique which offers a means of modifying the growth and development of crops through relatively simple changes to the method of water delivery. The technique causes the stimulation of physiological responses which are normally associated with water stress and this results in a significant reduction in water use through the production of chemical signals in drying roots. Partial drying of one half of the roots of plants grown with two root systems is rapidly translated into a reduction in transpiration and assimilation of all the crop leaves. The aim of this research is to examine and simulate the novel irrigation method (PRD), which would stimulate the endogenous stress response mechanisms of Conocarpus erectus trees in the pilot area of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain and wheat and maize crops in the Mashtul Pilot Area (MPA), Egypt using Saltmed model so that vigor is reduced and the efficiency of water use is enhanced. This is to be achieved by the manipulation of the hydration status of parts of a crop’s roots that could be used to control vegetative vigor without detrimental effects on canopy water relations. The PRD technique is researched for wheat as a winter crop and maize as a summer crop in Egypt. The technique causes the stimulation of physiological responses which are normally associated with water stress and this results in a significant reduction in water use through the production of chemical signals in drying roots. The results confirmed an increase in irrigation water use efficiency using PRD comparing with conventional flood irrigation. The research highly recommends applying the PRD method in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and in new reclaimed areas in Egypt to save water and improve crop quality.
