Circulating micro RNA, mi R-122 and mi R-221 signature in Egyptian patients with chronic hepatitis C related hepatocellular carcinoma

AiM: To explore the potential usefulness of serum miR-122 and miR-221 as non-invasive diagnostic markers of hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 90 adult patients of both sex with HCV-related chronic liver disease and chronic hepatitis C related HCC. in addition to the 10 healthy control individuals, patients were stratified into; interferon-na?ve chronic hepatitis C(CH)(n = 30), post-hepatitis C compensated cirrhosis(LC)(n = 30) and treatment-naive HCC(n = 30). All patients and controls underwent full clinical assessment and laboratory investigations in addition to the evaluation of the level of serum miR NA expression by ***: There was a significant fold change in serum mi RNA expression in the different patient groups when compared to normal controls; mi R-122 showed significant fold increasing in both CH and HCC and significant fold decrease in LC. On the other hand, mi R-221 showed significant fold elevation in both CH and LC groups and significant fold decrease in HCC group(P = 0.01). Comparing fold changes in miR NAs in HCC group vs non HCC group(CH and Cirrhosis), there was non-significant fold elevation in miR-122(P = 0.21) and significant fold decreasing in miR-221 in HCC vs non-HCC(P = 0.03). ROC curve analysis for miR-221 yielded 87% sensitivity and 40% specificity for the differentiation of HCC patients from non-HCC at a cutoff 1.82. CONCLUSiON: Serum miR-221 has a strong potential to serve as one of the novel non-invasive biomarkers of HCC.

A novel green inhibitor for C-steel corrosion in 2.0 mol·L^-1 hydrochloric acid solution

The corrosion inhibition characteristics of aqueous extract of seeds of Melia azedarach L.(MA) have been studied as eco-friendly green inhibitor for corrosion control of C-steel in 2 mol·L^(-1) HCl solution by gravimetric and electrochemical methods. The results depict that, the extract inhibits efficiently the corrosion of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid. The efficiency of extract is increased with increasing the extract concentration but independent on the studied temperature. The adsorption of the extract components onto the steel surface was found to be spontaneous, and follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The surface morphology of C-steel, in the absence and presence of MA extract in 2.0 mol·L^(-1) hydrochloric acid solution, was studied using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).

The immobilization of Co（Ⅱ） in various cement matrices was investigated by using the solidification/stabilization（S/S） *** different cement pastes used in this study were ordinary Portland cement in absence and presence of water reducing-and water repelling-admixtures as well as blended cement with *** ratios of Co（Ⅱ） were used（0.5% and 1.0% by weight of the solid binder）.The hydration characteristics of the used cement pastes were tested via the determination of the combined water content,phase composition and compressive strength at different time intervals up to 180 *** degree of immobilization of the added heavy metal ions was evaluated by determining the leached ion concentration after time intervals extended up to 180 *** leachability experiments were carried out by using two modes：the static and the semi-dynamic leaching *** was noticed that the concentration of the leached Co2＋ ions in the static mode of leachability was lower than the solubility of its hydroxide in all the investigated cement pastes.

A model-based prognostics method for fatigue crack growth in fuselage panels

This paper proposes a model-based prognostics method that couples the Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) and a new developed linearization method. The proposed prognostics method is developed in the context of fatigue crack propagation in fuselage panels where the model parameters are unknown and the crack propagation is affected by different types of uncertainties. The coupled method is composed of two steps. The first step employs EKF to estimate the unknown model parameters and the current damage state. in the second step, the proposed efficient linearization method is applied to compute analytically the statistical distribution of the damage evolution path in some future time. A numerical case study is implemented to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the coupled EKF-linearization method provides satisfactory results: the EKF algorithm well identifies the model parameters, and the linearization method gives comparable prediction results to Monte Carlo(MC) method while leading to very significant computational cost saving. The proposed prognostics method for fatigue crack growth can be used for developing predictive maintenance strategy for an aircraft fleet, in which case, the computational cost saving is significantly meaningful.

Spinal cord injury remains a major cause of disability in young adults,and beyond acute decompression and rehabilitation,there are no pharmacological treatments to limit the progression of injury and optimize recovery in this *** the thorough investigation of the complement system in triggering and propagating cerebral neuroinflammation,a similar role for complement in spinal neuroinflammation is a focus of ongoing *** this work,we survey the current literature investigating the role of complement in spinal cord injury including the sources of complement proteins,triggers of complement activation,and role of effector functions in the *** study relevant data demonstrating the different triggers of complement activation after spinal cord injury including direct binding to cellular debris,and or activation via antibody binding to damage-associated molecular *** effector functions of complement have been implicated in spinal cord injury,and we critically evaluate recent studies on the dual role of complement anaphylatoxins in spinal cord injury while emphasizing the lack of pathophysiological understanding of the role of opsonins in spinal cord *** this pathophysiological review,we systematically review the different translational approaches used in preclinical models of spinal cord injury and discuss the challenges for future translation into human *** review emphasizes the need for future studies to dissect the roles of different complement pathways in the pathology of spinal cord injury,to evaluate the phases of involvement of opsonins and anaphylatoxins,and to study the role of complement in white matter degeneration and regeneration using translational strategies to supplement genetic models.

Paracetamol is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug widely used in pharmaceutical applications for its sturdy, antipyretic and analgesic action. However, an overdose of paracetamol can cause fulminant hepatic necrosis and other toxic effects. Thus, the development of advantageous analytical tools to detect and determine paracetamol is required. Due to simplicity, higher sensitivity and selectivity as well as costefficiency, electrochemical sensors were fully investigated in last decades. This review describes the advancements made in the development of electrochemical sensors for the paracetamol detection and quantification in pharmaceutical and biological samples. The progress made in electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of paracetamol in the last 10 years was examined, with a special focus on highly innovative features introduced by nanotechnology. As the literature is rather extensive, we tried to simplify this work by summarizing and grouping electrochemical sensors according to the by which manner their substrates were chemically modified and the analytical performances obtained.

A new systematic firefly algorithm for forecasting the durability of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete

This study presents a new systematic algorithm to optimize the durability of reinforced recycled aggregate *** proposed algorithm integrates machine learning with a new version of the firefly algorithm called chaotic based firefly algorithm(CFA)to evolve a rational and efficient predictive *** CFA optimizer is augmented with chaotic maps and Levy flight to improve the firefly performance in forecasting the chloride penetrability of strengthened recycled aggregate concrete(RAC).A comprehensive and credible database of distinctive chloride migration coefficient results is used to establish the developed algorithm.A dataset composite of nine effective parameters,including concrete components and fundamental characteristics of recycled aggregate(RA),is used as input to predict the migration coefficient of strengthened RAC as output,k-fold cross validation algorithm is utilized to validate the hybrid *** numerical benchmark analyses are applied to prove the superiority and applicability of the CFA algorithm in predicting chloride *** show that the developed CFA approach significantly outperforms the firefly algorithm on almost tested functions and demonstrates powerful *** addition,the proposed strategy can be an active tool to recognize the contradictions in the experimental results and can be especially beneficial for assessing the chloride resistance of RAC.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and micro-RNA in the diagnosis of hepatic fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C virus

BACKGROUND Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging has shown promise in the detection and quantification of hepatic fibrosis. in addition, the liver has numerous endogenous micro-RNAs(miRs) that play important roles in the regulation of biological processes such as cell proliferation and hepatic *** To assess diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and miRs in diagnosing and staging hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis *** This prospective study included 208 patients and 82 age-and sex-matched controls who underwent diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen, miR profiling, and liver biopsy. Pathological scoring was classified according to the METAViR scoring system. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and miR were calculated and correlated with pathological *** The ADC value decreased significantly with the progression of fibrosis, from controls(F0) to patients with early fibrosis(F1 and F2) to those with late fibrosis(F3 and F4)(median 1.92, 1.53, and 1.25 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s, respectively)(P = 0.001).The cut-off ADC value used to differentiate patients from controls was 1.83 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s with an area under the curve(AUC) of 0.992. Combining ADC and miR-200 b revealed the highest AUC(0.995) for differentiating patients from controls with an accuracy of 96.9%. The cut-off ADC used to differentiate early fibrosis from late fibrosis was 1.54 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s with an AUC of 0.866. The combination of ADC and miR-200 b revealed the best AUC(0.925) for differentiating early fibrosis from late fibrosis with an accuracy of 80.2%. The ADC correlated with miR-200 b(r =-0.61, P = 0.001), miR-21(r =-0.62, P = 0.001), and miR-29(r = 0.52,P = 0.001).CONCLUSiON Combining ADC and miRs offers an alternative surrogate non-invasive diagnostic tool for diagnosing and staging hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
