Does granulocyte-colony stimulating factor administration induce damage or repair response in schistosomiasis?

AIM:To introduce Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) as a new therapeutic modality for schistosomiasis through stem cell mobilization,immunomodulation or fibrosis remodeling. METHODS:In this study,a 5 d course of human recombinant G-CSF (100 μg/kg sc) was applied to Schis-tosoma mansoni-infected mice at different stages of disease (5 d before infection as well as 3,5 and 7 wk post-infection). The animals were sacrificed at 10 d as well as 4,6 and 8 wk post infection. Mice were examined for:(1) Total leukocyte count which is an accepted surrogate marker for the stem cell mobilization into the circulation; (2) Egg count in intestine and liver tissue to assess the parasitic load; and (3) Histopathological changes in Hx/E and Masson trichrome stained sections as well as collagen content in Sirius redstained liver sections to determine the severity of liver fibrosis. RESULTS:Mice developed leukocytosis. The egg load and the number of granulomas were not affected by the G-CSF treatment but there was an obvious change in the composition of granulomas towards an increased cellularity. Moreover,fibrosis was significantly decreased in treated groups compared to untreated animals (collagen content either preinfection or at 3 and 5 wk post infection:5.8 ± 0.5,4.7 ± 0.5,4.0 ± 0.7 vs 8.2 ± 0.9; P ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSION:Although G-CSF did not cause direct elimination of the parasite,it enhanced granulomatous reaction and reduced the fibrosis. Further investigation of the underlying mechanisms of these two actions is warranted.

Intelligent Disease Diagnosis Model for Energy Aware Cluster Based IoT Healthcare Systems

In recent days,advancements in the Internet of Things(IoT)and cloud computing(CC)technologies have emerged in different application areas,particularly *** use of IoT devices in healthcare sector often generates large amount of data and also spent maximum energy for data transmission to the cloud ***,energy efficient clustering mechanism is needed to effectively reduce the energy consumption of IoT *** the same time,the advent of deep learning(DL)models helps to analyze the healthcare data in the cloud server for decision *** this motivation,this paper presents an intelligent disease diagnosis model for energy aware cluster based IoT healthcare systems,called IDDM-EAC *** proposed IDDM-EAC technique involves a 3-stage process namely data acquisition,clustering,and disease *** addition,the IDDM-EAC technique derives a chicken swarm optimization based energy aware clustering(CSOEAC)technique to group the IoT devices into clusters and select cluster heads(CHs).Moreover,a new coyote optimization algorithm(COA)with deep belief network(DBN),called COA-DBN technique is employed for the disease diagnostic *** COA-DBN technique involves the design of hyperparameter optimizer using COA to optimally adjust the parameters involved in the DBN *** order to inspect the betterment of the IDDM-EAC technique,a wide range of experiments were carried out using real time data from IoT devices and benchmark data from UCI *** experimental results demonstrate the promising performance with the minimal total energy consumption of 63%whereas the EEPSOC,ABC,GWO,and ACO algorithms have showcased a higher total energy consumption of 69%,78%,83%,and 84%correspondingly.

Racial Differences Effects on Oral Health and Periodontal Diseases Extent, Staging and Grading among the Multi-Ethnic Expatriates in Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia

Background: Given the increase in the numbers of expatriates in Saudi Arabia and the shortage of information about expatriates’ oral health and periodontal disease severity and progression. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the racial differences on oral health and periodontal disease extent, staging, and grading among the multi-ethnic expatriates in the Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 300 expatriates in Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. They were divided into three equal racial different groups (n = 100), Arabs (AR), Asians (AS), and africans (af). The interviews of all participants were completed then the clinical examinations of periodontal diseases extent, staging, and grading parameters were performed. Statistical analysis was done by ANOVA test, Tukey’s test, and Chi-square test. The statistical significance level was determined at p Results: There were statistically significant differences in the comparison between the three ethnic/racial groups in clinical parameters except in GBI, PCR, FI, TFO, and BC, where there were no statistically significant differences in the comparison between the three ethnic/racial groups. There were differences associated with age, gender, smoking, and diabetes, without statistically significant differences among the three racial groups. Conclusion: We concluded that most participants in this study had a generalized severe grade 4 plaque-induced gingivitis and localized periodontitis stage III grade B.
