Relationship between the Components of the Metabolic Syndrome and Measures of Bone Mineral Density in Post-Menopausal Women

Aim: To examine the association between individual components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and bone mineral density (BMD) among postmenopausal women. Methods: A total of 177 postmenopausal women participated in a cross-sectional study. They were interviewed to collect anthropometric and demographic characteristics. BMD was measured and biochemical parameters were estimated in fasting blood samples. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the association between individual components of MetS and BMD. Results: Among 177 postmenopausal women, 116 (66%) had MetS. Women with MetS had significantly higher mean values of BMD and T scores at the total hip (P < 0.05) compared to women without MetS, which disappeared after adjustment for body weight, but not for age (P < 0.05). Features of the MetS other than waist circumference were not significantly related to BMD values at the three skeletal sites, except for diastolic blood pressure association with BMD at the femoral neck (r = 0.150, P < 0.05). BMD at the total hip was also positively associated with both of triglycerides (r = 0.157, P < 0.05) and fasting blood glucose (r = 0.193, P < 0.01). To identify the independent factors affecting the BMD at the 3 skeletal sites according to metabolic states, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Conclusions: Body weight and osteocalcin were more strongly associated with bone mass than any other component of MetS in postmenopausal women. However, further studies seem to be needed to confirm their observation.

Reliability Evaluation of Distribution Systems under <i>μ</i>Grid-Tied and Islanded <i>μ</i>Grid Modes Using Monte Carlo Simulation

Reliability evaluation of distribution networks under grid-tied and islanded μ grid modes is presented. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) algorithm is applied to a modified RBTS Bus 2 distribution network. The network includes three types of distributed energy resources, namely, solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and diesel turbine generator (DTG). These distributed generators contribute to supply part of the load during grid-connected mode, but supply 100% of the load in the islanded μ grid mode. A storage system is included to decrease the peak load since the peak of the output power of the PV’s and the peak load do not match time wise in most load profiles. The impact of implementing renewable distributed generation, storage systems, and conventional generation on the reliability of distribution network is studied. This study shows that the penetration of distributed generations can improve the reliability indices of the distribution network.

Upwind Finite-Volume Solution of Stochastic Burgers’ Equation

In this paper, a stochastic finite-volume solver based on polynomial chaos expansion is developed. The upwind scheme is used to avoid the numerical instabilities. The Burgers’ equation subjected to deterministic boundary conditions and random viscosity is solved. The solution uncertainty is quantified for different values of viscosity. Monte-Carlo simulations are used to validate and compare the developed solver. The mean, standard deviation and the probability distribution function (p.d.f) of the stochastic Burgers’ solution is quantified and the effect of some parameters is investigated. The large sparse linear system resulting from the stochastic solver is solved in parallel to enhance the performance. Also, Monte-Carlo simulations are done in parallel and the execution times are compared in both cases.

Jacob’s Syndrome and Deficiency of 11-Beta-Hydroxylase Enzyme Association Revealed by a Statural Advance: A Case Report

47XYY syndrome is a rare sex chromosome variant with an extra Y chromosome. Most patients with a 47XYY karyotype have a normal phenotype. This disorder seems to be associated with a higher risk of developing behavior and cognitive problems, tall stature and infertility in adulthood. We report here a rare case of 47, XYY syndrome associated with an 11-beta-hydroxylase deficiency revealed by a stature advance along with precocious puberty after obtaining informed consent from parents. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature.

Energy Saving Potential Due to Refurbishment of Federal Public Housing in the UAE

This paper, computer energy modeling is used to estimate the potential energy savings of refurbishing existing public federal housing in the United Arab Emirates. Such houses are built by the UAE Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) in five of the seven emirates that make up the UAE federation. The energy modeling was performed using the Integrated Environmental Solutions-Virtual Environment (IES-VE) commercial software. The study covered representative MoPW houses built in the period of 1974-2012. The results indicate potential energy savings upto 30.8% for the case of model 717 when refurbished to 2 Pearls standards compared to the as built configuration. The results showed little benefit in going from 1 Pearl to 2 Pearls refurbishment level. Thus 1 Pearl seems to be the most practical. This shows the high potential for energy, and thus environmental, savings should refurbishment be carried out on the homes built by the MoPW.

Purpose:Malnutrition is a common problem among hospitalized patients,especially among traumatic brain injury(TBI)*** is developed from hypermetabolism and the condition may worsen under the circumstance of underfeeding or incompatible dietary ***,the data of nutrient intake especially calorie and protein among TBI patients were ***,this study aimed to determine the calorie and protein intake among acute and sub-acute TBI patients receiving medical nutrition therapy in hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah,***:This observational study involved 50 patients recruited from the neurosurgical *** of 24 h dietary recall was utilized and combined with self-administered food diaries for 2-8 *** consumptions including calorie intake and protein intake were analyzed using Nutritionist PRO™(Woodinville,USA)and manual calculation based on the Malaysian food composition database(2015).Results:Patients consisted of 56%males and 44%females with the median age of 28.0(IQR=22.8-36.5)years,of which 92%were diagnosed as mild TBI and the remaining(8%)as moderate *** Glasgow coma scale(GCS)was adopted to classify TBI severity with the score 13-15 being mild and 9-12 being *** median length of hospital stay was 2(IQR=2.0e3.3)*** and protein intake improved significantly from day 1 to discharge ***,the intake during discharge day was still considered as suboptimal,i.e.75%of calorie requirement,whilst the median protein intake was only 61.3%relative to protein ***,the average percentages of calorie and protein intakes throughout hospitalization were remarkably lower,i.e.52.2%and 41.0%,***:Although the calorie and protein intakes had increased from baseline,hospitalized TBI patients were still at a risk to develop malnutrition as the average intakes were considerably low as compared to their *** nutrient intakes especially calorie and protein are crucial to

Growth and Simulation Study of Glycine Sodium Nitrate Non-Linear Single Crystal

The present study is designed to simulate and study the production of single crystals of semi-organic non-linear optical Glycine Sodium Nitrate (GSN) by using hyper6 software and experimentally by slow evaporation technique. This work has investigated the molecular properties of the crystals using the density functional theory to obtain the infrared spectrum of the crystal by simulation. The FTIR investigation of growing crystal has shown that the spectrum of the GSN crystal compared to simulation evaluation is similar;the only difference is in the range of 1.9% to 2.75% of wavelength peak values. The ultraviolet experimental measurement of the GSN molecule reveals the possibility of non-linear properties due to the spectrum cutoff in the wavelength peak of 301 nm. There was a significantly positive correlation between simulation and experimental assessment.

Causes of anemia in pregnant women of the state of azad kashmir: A cross-sectional survey

Background: Epidemic of anemia is considered to be a significant threat to pregnant women or women in child bearing age. Anemia is one of the major nutritional health disorders affecting significant proportion of population not only in developing countries but also in developed countries. This threat is more alarming in developing countries where poverty, illiteracy may contribute to high risk for causes of anemia. Objective: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the main causes of anemia in pregnant women in the State of Azad Kashmir, Muzaffarabad and to investigate the relationship between education and anemia. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted over a sample of 433 pregnant women. The Chi- square test has been used to assess the statistical significance of different risk factors with Hb% (Heamoglobin) of the respondent. The multiple logistic regression model was used to get the most significant risk factors of anemia. Results: The study shows that the most dominant risk factors of the anemia were age at the time of marriage at different age categories that are 16 - 20 (OR = 3.945) (OR Odds ratios) with 95% C-I (confidence interval) (0.294 to 52.985), 21 - 25 (OR = 2.316) with 95% C-I (0.192 to 27.932) and 26 - 30 (OR = 4.179) with 95% C-I (0.347 to 50.320). Education at different education levels that is illiterate (OR = 1.191) with 95% C-I (0.005 to 87.279) and primary (OR = 1.179) with 95% C-I (0.009 to 156.200). Hb% at different levels 3 - 4 g/dl (OR = 1.220) with 95% C-I (0.299 to 4.984), 5 - 6 g/dl (OR = 2.221) with 95% C-I (0.679 to7.263) and 7 - 10 g/dl (OR = 1.384) with 95% C-I (0.408 to 4.689). A novel cytogenetic abnormality r(7)(::p11.2->q36.3::) in a Philadelphia-positive chronic myeloid leukemia case

The so-calledPhiladelphia(Ph) chromosome is present in more than 90% of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cases. It results in juxtaposition of the 5' part of the BCR gene on chromosome 22 and the 3' part of the ABL1 gene on chromosome 9. An additional acquired monosomy 7 or deletion of 7q is associated with poor prognosis in a variety of myeloid disorders. Here we report a novel Ph chromosome positive CML case with a ring chromosome 7 [r(7)]. Immunophenotyping was compatible with CML, although 4.5% of total leucocytes appeared like acute myelogeneous leukemia (AML) subtype M2. The r(7) was characterized in detail by array-proven multicolor banding (aMCB), the latter being of enormous significance to characterize breakpoint regions in detail. Underlying mechanisms and prognostic are discussed, as ring chromosomes are rare cytogenetic abnormalities in hematopoietic malignancies.
