In vivo study of pomegranate(Punica granatum) peel extract efficacy against Giardia lamblia in infected experimental mice

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of pomegranate(Punica granatum) peel extract as an alternative treatment on the white laboratory mice against ***: Experimental animals were divided into five groups, including Group A:control(infected untreated), Group B: infected and fed with pectin 7 days before infection, Group C: infected and fed with pectin starting from 7th day of infection,Group D: infected and fed with pomegranate peel extract 7 days before infection, and Group E: infected and fed with pomegranate peel extract starting from 7th day of ***: Results from this study revealed that the prevention rate in the experimental groups reached approximately 50% by the 10 th day of using pomegranate peel ***, stool cyst counts of groups showed a significant reduction in the shedding of cysts approximately 75.6% by day 20 post-infection. ELISA test showed a reduction in Giardia antigen in the stools of the experimental groups which received pomegranate peel extract. The cure rate of these groups was approximately 97.4% by 28 th day of ***: Our present findings indicated that the pomegranate peel extract proved to be valuable in prevention and treatment of Giardia lamblia infection. Further studies are required to determine the effective dose of pomegranate peel extract against Giardia lamblia infection.

The so-calledPhiladelphia(Ph) chromosome is present in more than 90% of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cases. It results in juxtaposition of the 5' part of the BCR gene on chromosome 22 and the 3' part of the ABL1 gene on chromosome 9. An additional acquired monosomy 7 or deletion of 7q is associated with poor prognosis in a variety of myeloid disorders. Here we report a novel Ph chromosome positive CML case with a ring chromosome 7 [r(7)]. Immunophenotyping was compatible with CML, although 4.5% of total leucocytes appeared like acute myelogeneous leukemia (AML) subtype M2. The r(7) was characterized in detail by array-proven multicolor banding (aMCB), the latter being of enormous significance to characterize breakpoint regions in detail. Underlying mechanisms and prognostic are discussed, as ring chromosomes are rare cytogenetic abnormalities in hematopoietic malignancies.

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia in Infants and Children and Treatment with Microencapsulated Iron II Fumarate and Supplied Ascorbic Acid as “Sprinkles”

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children and infants is a common nutritional problem all over the world. Infants and young children have a high risk for developing iron deficiency (ID) because they have high demand for iron during the period of rapid growth. This is aggravated by the insufficiency of iron in their diet. Iron supplementation programs using pediatric tablets or drops have not been successful in the control of anemia amongst infants and children in some countries. “Sprinkles” is an innovative multi-micronutrient home fortification strategy to control iron deficiency and anemia to be more useful. Objective: The objective was to estimate the prevalence ID and IDA in infants and children in Ibb City, Yemen Republic;evaluate the use of a new form of iron and determine the hematologic response to different doses and forms of iron in Sprinkles and iron drops. Design: Using a prospective, randomized, controlled design, we studied 337 randomly children aged 24 - 48 months and infants aged 6 - 24 months in Ibb City (hemoglobin: 70 - 99 g/L). One group received a daily sachet of microencapsulated ferrous fumarate (80 mg elemental Fe) in powder form plus ascorbic acid to be sprinkled onto any complementary food eaten (sprinkles group);a control group received ferrous sulfate drops 3 times/d for 2 months (total dose: 40 mg elemental Fe). Hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations were measured at baseline and at the end of treatment. Results: Successful treatment of anemia (hemoglobin > 100 g/L) occurred in 58% of the sprinkles group and in 56% of the drops group, with minimal side effects in both groups. Geometric mean ferritin concentrations increased significantly in each group from baseline to the end of treatment (P Conclusion: Use of ferrous sulfate drops or a single daily dose of microencapsulated ferrous fumarate sprinkles plus ascorbicacid resulted in a similar rate of successful treatment of anemia without side effects. Purpose:Malnutrition is a common problem among hospitalized patients,especially among traumatic brain injury(TBI)*** is developed from hypermetabolism and the condition may worsen under the circumstance of underfeeding or incompatible dietary ***,the data of nutrient intake especially calorie and protein among TBI patients were ***,this study aimed to determine the calorie and protein intake among acute and sub-acute TBI patients receiving medical nutrition therapy in hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah,***:This observational study involved 50 patients recruited from the neurosurgical *** of 24 h dietary recall was utilized and combined with self-administered food diaries for 2-8 *** consumptions including calorie intake and protein intake were analyzed using Nutritionist PRO™(Woodinville,USA)and manual calculation based on the Malaysian food composition database(2015).Results:Patients consisted of 56%males and 44%females with the median age of 28.0(IQR=22.8-36.5)years,of which 92%were diagnosed as mild TBI and the remaining(8%)as moderate *** Glasgow coma scale(GCS)was adopted to classify TBI severity with the score 13-15 being mild and 9-12 being *** median length of hospital stay was 2(IQR=2.0e3.3)*** and protein intake improved significantly from day 1 to discharge ***,the intake during discharge day was still considered as suboptimal,i.e.75%of calorie requirement,whilst the median protein intake was only 61.3%relative to protein ***,the average percentages of calorie and protein intakes throughout hospitalization were remarkably lower,i.e.52.2%and 41.0%,***:although the calorie and protein intakes had increased from baseline,hospitalized TBI patients were still at a risk to develop malnutrition as the average intakes were considerably low as compared to their *** nutrient intakes especially calorie and protein are crucial to
