Endoscopic ultrasound radiofrequency ablation of pancreatic insulinoma in elderly patients:Three case reports

BACKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)-guided radiofrequency ablation(RFA)has recently been proposed as a local treatment for functional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms in patients unfit for surgery,in order to obtain clinical syndrome *** on the safety and long-term effectiveness of this approach are scarce,and EUS-RFA procedures are not *** SUMMARY The present case series reports 3 elderly patients with a pancreatic insulinoma and comorbidities,locally treated by EUS-guided RFA with clinical success in terms of hypoglycemic *** procedures were performed during deep sedation,under EUS control with a 19 G needle,an electrode 5-mm in size at a power of 30 W and multiple RFA applications during the same session in order to treat the whole area of the *** relief of symptoms was evident in 2 patients after the first EUS-RFA,while in the third patient a second endoscopic treatment was *** 3 patients are symptom-free without need of medications after 24 mo of follow-up with imaging follow-up showing no disease recurrence.A single adverse event of intraprocedural bleeding occurred,which was successfully treated *** EUS-RFA represents an effective and safe alternative to surgery for the treatment of insulinomas in elderly patients at high surgical ***,larger multicenter studies withlonger follow-up are needed in order to better assess its safety and clinical success.

The Post-Merger Performance： Evidence From Italy

The objective of this paper is to investigate whether mergers create value for shareholders in both the short and long term. For this purpose, 120 announcements of mergers that were registered in Italy during the period 1994-2006 among listed companies were examined. The short-term analysis was conducted using the event study methodology in order to estimate the cumulative abnormal returns （CARs） in the time window around the announcement date （-10, ＋10）. In this work, the sample of 120 mergers was divided into two sub-samples： the first considers the mergers that were carried out in all sectors of the economy, and the second focuses only on bank mergers. From the results obtained it would appear that, while the sub-sample of all mergers registered a statistically significant value creation for the shareholders of both the bidder and target companies, values also confirmed by combined analysis, the second sub-sample registered negative values for bidder companies and positive values for target companies. Negative values also seem to be confirmed by the results of the combined analysis both at the date of announcement and throughout the entire period of observation. For the long-term analysis, the Buy and Hold Abnormal Returns （BHARs） methodology was used, with which it was possible to observe the returns for three years. Inductive Model Generation for Text Classification Using a Bipartite Heterogeneous Network

Algorithms for numeric data classification have been applied for text classification. Usually the vector space model is used to represent text collections. The characteristics of this representation such as sparsity and high dimensionality sometimes impair the quality of general-purpose classifiers. Networks can be used to represent text collections, avoiding the high sparsity and allowing to model relationships among different objects that compose a text collection. Such network- based representations can improve the quality of the classification results. One of the simplest ways to represent textual collections by a network is through a bipartite heterogeneous network, which is composed of objects that represent the documents connected to objects that represent the terms. Heterogeneous bipartite networks do not require computation of similarities or relations among the objects and can be used to model any type of text collection. Due to the advantages of representing text collections through bipartite heterogeneous networks, in this article we present a text classifier which builds a classification model using the structure of a bipartite heterogeneous network. Such an algorithm, referred to as IMBHN （Inductive Model Based on Bipartite Heterogeneous Network）, induces a classification model assigning weights to objects that represent the terms for each class of the text collection. An empirical evaluation using a large amount of text collections from different domains shows that the proposed IMBHN algorithm produces significantly better results than k-NN, C4.5, SVM, and Naive Bayes algorithms.

Comparison of grain protein profiles of Brazilian cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) cultivars based on principal component analysis

This study aims to compare the grain protein profile of four Brazilian cowpea cultivars (BRS Aracê, BRS Itaim, BRS Pajeú, and BRS Xiquexique) by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and principal component analysis (PCA). 2-DE efficiently separate cowpea protein profiles, showing high homogeneity among the four cultivars. In addition, the principal component analysis indicated that there is a difference in abundance of proteins among the cultivars. The cultivars BRS Aracê and BRS Xiquexique, both biofortified in iron and zinc, were separated from the cultivars BRS Itaim and BRS Pajeú. These results demonstrate that protein profiles can be used to discriminate cowpea varieties.

Patterns of treatment with PDE5 inhibitors in the clinical practice in Italy： longitudinal data from the Erectile Dysfunction Observational Study

The Erectile Dysfunction Observational Study （EDOS） is a 6-months observational prospective multicentric study enrolling men with erectile dysfunction （ED） who asked, to be started on a treatment or to change a previous treatment. Aims of the study were to analyse the pattern of treatment and compare the efficacy of treatments used. Patients were enrolled during a normal hospital visit and were prescribed a treatment for ED. They were asked at baseline and after 3 and 6 months, to answer a set of questions from the International Index of Erectile Function, Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction （EDITS） and Short Form of the Psychological and Interpersonal Relationships Scale questionnaires （SF-PAIRS）. Clinicians were free to prescribe any therapy for ED available in the market, and to change therapy at any time during the study. Out of 1 338 patients, available for analysis at 6 months, 624 （47%） changed their treatment during the study and 714 （53%） continued with the drug prescribed at baseline. Patients assuming tadalafil had a significantly higher probability of maintaining the same treatment compared to sildenafil or vardenafil. There was no clinically significant difference in terms of efficacy, patient satisfaction, self-confidence and spontaneity between the different inhibitors of PDE5. The ‘time concerns＇ domain score of SF-PAIRS, was statistically better in patients assuming tadalafil. In conclusion sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil show similar efficacy in the clinical practice. However, patients receiving tadalafil display a lower risk to discontinue or change the treatment.

The Long-Run Performance of IPOs in Italy： A Comparison of Venture and Non-Venture-Backed Companies

The phenomena associated with the performance of newly listed companies has increased the interest of many researchers who have developed a vast literature on long-term underpricing and underperformance, which together with hot and cold issue markets, represent the three anomalies that have always accompanied with Initial Public Offerings （IPOs）. The objective of this work is to investigate the long-run performance of IPOs of venture and non-venture-backed companies. The analysis of a sample of 102 IPOs carried out in Italy in 1998-2005 revealed that both companies （venture-backed and non-venture-backed） showed negative values, thus, confirming the phenomenon of underperformance. During the 36 months following their listing, venture-backed companies seemed to register negative and statistically significant values both with the CARsVB methodology （-93.99%） and the Buy and Hold Abnormal Returns methodology （BHARsVB -88.37%）. Venture-backed companies, unlike non- venture-backed companies, seem to be able to restrain the losses, measured by both methods, in the first 12 months （CARsB - 12.38% -20.15% CARSNNVB; BHARsVB - 10.17%; BHARsNVB - 15.51%）. During the 36 months, however, the IPOs showed negative and statistically significant values regardless of whether they were venture or non-venture-backed. The test on the difference between the average abnormal returns of the two methodologies （CAARS and BHAARs） did not produce statistically significant results. The Wealth Relative was calculated and from the results it would appear that the portfolio of venture-backed IPOs does not register ＂brilliant＂ performances. The portfolio of 102 IPOs does not seem to beat the ＂market portfolio＂. In conclusion, therefore, the phenomenon of underperformance seems to be real in our country and is documented by strongly negative and statistically significant values obtained from the samples of IPOs analyzed.

Electrical probing of carrier separation in InAs/InP/GaAsSb core-dualshell nanowires

We investigate the tunnel coupling between the outer p-type GaAsSb shell and the n-type InAs core in catalyst-free InAs/lnP/GaAsSb core-dualshell *** present a device fabrication protocol based on wet-etching processes on selected areas of the nanostructures that enables multiple configurations of measurements in the same nanowire-based device(***-shell,core-core and core-shell).Low-temperature(4.2 K)transport in the shell-shell configuration in nanowires with 5 nm-thick InP barrier reveals a weak negative differential ***,when the InP barrier thickness is increased to 10 nm,this negative differential resistance is fully *** electrical resistance between the InAs core and the GaAsSb shell,measured in core-shell configuration,is significantly higher with respect to the resistance of the InAs core and of the GaAsSb *** field effect,applied via a back-gate,has an opposite impact on the electrical transport in the core and in the shell *** results show that electron and hole free carriers populate the InAs and GaAsSb regions respectively and indicate InAs/InP/GaAsSb core-dualshell nanowires as an ideal system for the investigation of the physics of interacting electrons and holes at the nanoscale.

The Geodynamics-Earth-Tides-meeting-2016 was held in the Karst, the origin of geologic karst- formation. Surface-rivers are absent, and water flows in channels over distances of 30 km, forming subsurface caves. Geodetic observations allow detecting caves and sense hydrologic flow. The Karst water had been recognized before Romans as provision for man and livestock. Proto-historic remains near the mouth of the underground river suggest the water outpouring from the Karst was associated with deities to be worshiped. Here the geodetic and cultural aspects of the Karst are summarized, illustrating the field trip that had been offered to the participants.

Human semen hyperviscosity： prevalence, pathogenesis and therapeutic aspects

The aims of this study were （a） to determine the prevalence of subjects with semen hyperviscosity （SHV） in a large population of male partners of subfertile couples; （b） to identify any correlation between SHV and infections or inflammation of the genital tract; （c） to assess the effects of therapeutic approaches for treating SHV; and （d） to assess sperm kinetic parameters after successful treatment of SHV. A retrospective study of 1 833 male partners of subfertile couples was conducted. Next, clinical, seminal, bacteriological and ultrasound studies involving 52 subjects suffering from SHV were performed, and the SHV was classified as being mild （length of thread 〉 2 cm and ≤4 cm）, moderate （〉 4 cm and ≤ 6 cm） or severe （〉 6 cm）. The prevalence of SHV was observed in 26.2% （480） of the subjects, with 13.2% suffering from mild, 6.6% from moderate and 6.4% from severe SHV. Treatment was completely successful in only 27 subjects （52.0%）, primarily in those who had mild basal SHV with a positive semen culture. In these subjects, progressive motility percentage, straight line velocity and linearity were significantly higher than pre-treatment levels. SHV is often found in subjects with subfertility. Pathogenesis was strictly related to infective/inflammatory factors in only 48.0% of cases; therefore, it is possible that biochemical, enzymatic or genetic factors have a role in this condition.
