High mechanical index post-contrast ultrasonography improves tissue structural display of hepatocellular carcinoma

Background The advent of second generation agent-SonoVue and low mechanical index real-time contrast enhanced ultrasonography （CEUS） imaging have been shown to improve the diagnostic performance of uhrasonography in hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）. But no report has described the effect of high mechanical index （MI） post-CEUS. This study aimed to investigate the value of post-CEUS in displaying tissue structures of HCC. Methods Seventy-six HCCs in 65 patients were included in the study. Each patient underwent three scans, high-MI （ MI ： 0. 15 - 1.6 ） pre-contrast ultrasound, low-MI （ MI ： 0. 04 - 0. 08 ） CEUS with contrast agent SonoVue, and high-MI post-contrast ultrasound, which was performed within 3 minutes after CEUS. The size, boundary, echogenicity, internal echotexture and posterior acoustic enhancement of the HCCs in the conventional scans before and after CEUS were evaluated. According to pathological evidence, diagnosis rates of pre-contrast, CEUS and post-contrast scans were determined and compared. The potential mechanism of post-contrast ultrasound imaging was also discussed. Results Compared with pre-contrast, post-contrast ultrasound showed improvement in image quality in most HCCs： twenty-six （34. 2% ） more lesions showed well defined margins and fourteen （18.4%） more nodules showed halo sign; twenty-three （30. 3% ） lesions demonstrated enlarged in sizes; changes in echogenicity were seen in 30 lesions （39.5%） ; eighteen （23.7%） more lesions showed heterogenecity and 20 （26. 3% ） more lesions showed “mosaic”or “nodule-in-nodule” sign; twelve （15.8%） more lesions showed posterior acoustic enhancement. Post-contrast ultrasound showed increased diagnostic accuracy of 93.4% （71/76）, compare with 88.2% （67/76） of CEUS alone. Conclusions High-MI post-contrast ultrasound utilizes harmonic signals during the rupture of microbubbles, and significantly improves the display of echo-characteristics of HCCs in ultrasound images, which adds diagnostic values

Facilitating effect of histamine on spatial memory deficits induced by dizocilpine as evaluated by 8-arm radial maze in SD rats

AIM: To investigate whether or not histamine is involved in spatial memory deficits induced by dizocilpine (MK-801) as evaluated by 8-arm radial maze of rats. METHODS: 8-Arm (4-arm baited) radial maze was used to measure spatial memory in rats. RESULTS: Bilaterally intrahippocampal (ih) injection of MK-801 (0.3 μg/site) impaired working memory and reference memory in rats. Both histamine (50, 100 ng/site, ih) and intraperitoneal (ip) injection of histidine (100, 200 mg/kg) markedly improved the spatial memory deficits induced by MK-801. On the other hand, the ameliorating effect of histidine (100 mg/kg, ip) was completely antagonized by α-fluoromethylhistidine (α-FMH, 5 μg/site, ih), a potent and selective histidine decarboxylase (HDC) inhibitor, and H1-antagonist pyrilamine (1 μg/site, ih), but not by H2-antagonist cimetidine, even at a high dose (2.5 μg/site, ih). Carbon-based nanomaterials cause toxicity by oxidative stress to the liver and brain in Sprague-Dawley rats

Carbon-based nanomaterials have important research significance in various disciplines,such as composite materials,nanoelectronic devices,biosensors,biological imaging,and drug ***,the human and ecological risks associated with carbon-based nanomaterials have received increasing ***,the biological safety of carbon based nanomaterials has not been systematically *** this study,we used different types of carbon materials,namely,graphene oxide(GO),single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs),and multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs),as models to observe their distribution and oxidative damage in *** results of Histopathological and ultrastructural examinations indicated that the liver and lungs were the main accumulation targets of these ***-μ-XRF analysis revealed that SWCNTs and MWCNTs might be present in the *** shows that the three types of carbon-based nanomaterials could cross the gas-blood barrier and eventually reach the liver *** addition,SWCNTs and MWCNTs could cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the cerebral *** increase in ROS and MDA levels and the decrease in GSH,SOD,and CAT levels indicated that the three types of nanomaterials might cause oxidative stress in the *** suggests that direct instillation of these carbon-based nanomaterials into rats could induce ROS *** addition,iron(Fe)contaminants in these nanomaterials were a definite source of free ***,these nanomaterials did not cause obvious damage to the rat brain *** deposition of selenoprotein in the rat brain was found to be related to oxidative stress and Fe *** information may support the development of secure and reasonable applications of the studied carbon-based nanomaterials.

Understory seedlings of Quercus mongolica survive by phenological escape

Understanding understory seedling regeneration mechanisms is important for the sustainable development of temperate primary forests in the context of increasingly intense climate warming *** poor regeneration of dominant tree species,however,is one of the biggest challenges it faces at the ***,the regeneration of the shade-intolerant Quercus mongolica seedling is difficult in primary forests,which contrasts with the extreme abundance of understory seedlings in secondary *** mechanism behind the interesting phenomenon is still *** study used in-situ monitoring and nursery-controlled experiment to investigate the survival rate,growth performance,as well as nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrations and pools of various organ tissues of seedlings for two consecutive years,further analyze the understory light availability and simulate the foliage carbon (C) gain in the secondary and primary *** suggested that seedlings in the secondary forest had greater biomass allocation aboveground,height and specific leaf area (SLA) in summer,which allowed the seedling to survive longer in the canopy closure *** light availability and positive C gain in early spring and late autumn are key factors affecting the growth and survival of understory seedlings in the secondary forest,whereas seedlings in the primary forest had annual negative carbon *** the growing season,the total NSC concentrations of seedlings gradually decreased,whereas those of seedlings in the secondary forest increased significantly in autumn,and were mainly stored in roots for winter consumption and the following year's summer shade period,which was verified by the nursery-controlled experiment that simulated autumn enhanced light availability improved seedling survival rate and NSC *** conclusion,our results revealed the survival trade-off strategies of Quercus mongolica seedlings and highlighted the necessity of high light availability d

Endovascular interventions for TransAtlantic InterSociety Consensus Ⅱ C and D femoropopliteal lesions

Background Peripheral artery disease accounts for more than 400 000 hospitalizations in the USA and results in symptoms ranging from claudication to gangrene. Recent advances in endovascular techniques have led to a more aggressive approach for treating peripheral artery disease. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the outcomes of endovascular interventions on TransAtlantic InterSociety Consensus （TASC） Ⅱ C and D femoropopliteal occlusive disease. Methods Data for all patients undergoing endovascular interventions for femoropopliteal occlusive disease from December 2007 through December 2010 were reviewed. Demographic data, risk factor data, preprocedural and postprocedural ankle-brachial indices, technical success rates, and complication rates were obtained. Primary, assisted primary, and secondary patency were determined by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors adversely affecting primary patency. Results The study group included 52 TASC Ⅱ C and 106 TASC Ⅱ D limbs in 126 patients （mean age, （68.0±18.0） years） The technical success rate was 91.1%. Complications occurred in 19 limbs （12.0%）, including 8 （5.1%） major complications. The mean follow-up period was （17.6±5.1） months （range, 12.0-48.0 months）. Primary patency rates at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years were 95%, 78%, 74%, and 74% in TASC Ⅱ C lesions and 89%, 62%, 52%, and 52% in TASC Ⅱ D lesions, respectively. Secondary patency rates at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years were 97%, 94%, 94%, and 94% in TASC Ⅱ C lesions and 97%, 95%, 83%, and 83% in TASC Ⅱ D lesions, respectively. It is significantly different between primary patency rates （P 〈0.05） but not secondary patency rates of TASC Ⅱ C and D groups （P 〉0.05）. Predictors of restenosis/occlusion included hyperlipidemia, lesion length, and popliteal artery involvement. Dynamical switchable quantum nonreciprocity induced by off-resonant chiral two-photon driving

Optical nonreciprocity,which refers to the direction-dependent emission,scattering and absorption of photons,plays a very important role in quantum engineering and quantum information ***,we propose an all-optical approach to achieve the optical dynamical switchable quantum nonreciprocity by an off-resonant chiral two-photon driving in a single microring cavity,which differs from the conventional nonreciprocal *** is shown that the optical field with time-dependent statistical properties can be generated and the nonreciprocity flips periodically,with switchable photon blockade and photon-induced tunneling *** find that the dynamical system is robust and immune to the parameter variations,which loosens the parameter range of ***,the time window for one-way quantum information is sufficiently wide and *** work opens a new idea for the current quantum nonreciprocal research,which can facilitate a memory functionality and be used for future inmemory superconducting quantum *** other nonreciprocal quantum devices,i.e.,dynamical switchable nonreciprocal squeezing and entanglement,may be inspired by our method,which is expected to have important applications in future quantum technology.

Dual-energy computed tomography angiography for evaluating the renal vascular variants

Background Recognizing renal vascular variants preoperatively is important in order to avoid vascular complications during surgery. This study aimed to investigate the renal vascular variants with dual-energy computed tomography （DECT） angiography to provide valuable information for surgery. Methods A total of 378 patients underwent DECT. The number, size, course and relationships of the renal vessels were retrospectively observed from the scans. Anomalies of renal arteries and veins were recorded and classified. Multiplanar reformations （MPR）, maximum intensity projections （MIP）, and volume renderings （VR） were used for analysis. Results In 378 patients （756 kidneys）, renal artery variations were discovered and recorded in 123 kidneys （16.3%, 123/756） of 106 patients （28.0%, 106/378）. Type IB （early branches of the only one main renal artery） and IC （accessory renal artery with only one main renal artery） were found most frequently with an incidence of 11.4% （43/378） and 14.5% （55/378）. The incidence of renal artery variations in the left kidney was not statistically different than in the right kidney （12.4% vs. 11.1%）. The incidence of renal vein variations was detected in 104 patients （27.5%, 104/378）. The incidence of venous variants in the right kidney was higher than in the left kidney （20.1% vs. 7.4%）, but left renal vein variations were more complex. Variants of the left renal vein were detected in 28 patients including type 1 （circumaortic left renal vein） in eight cases, type 2 （retroaortic left renal vein） in seven cases, type 3 （abnormal reflux） in six cases, type 4 （late venous confluence of left renal vein） in five cases, and type 5 （rare type） in two cases. The frequency of left renal vein variation associated with the left renal accessory artery was significantly higher than with early branches of the left renal artery （P=0.037）.
