Prevalence and clinical impact of sarcopenia in liver transplant recipients:A meta-analysis

BACKGROUND The prevalence of sarcopenia in patients undergoing liver transplantation(LT)remains to be determined partly because of different diagnostic criteria.Sarcopenia has recently been recognized as a new prognostic factor for predicting outcomes in LT candidates.AIM To estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia and evaluate its clinical effect on LT candidates.METHODS This systematic search was conducted in PubMed,Web of Science,Embase,and Cochrane Library for original English-language articles that investigated the prevalence and influence of sarcopenia in patients undergoing LT from database inception to November 30,2022.Cohort studies of the definition of sarcopenia that estimate sarcopenia prevalence and evaluate its effect on clinical outcomes and the risk of mortality were included.RESULTS Twenty-five studies involving 7760 patients undergoing LT were included.The pooled prevalence of sarcopenia in patients undergoing LT was 40.7%[95%confidence intervals(95%CI):32.1-49.6].The 1-,3-,and 5-year cumulative probab-ilities of post-LT survival in patients with preoperative sarcopenia were all lower than those without sarcopenia(P<0.05).Sarcopenia was associated with an increased risk of post-LT mortality in patients undergoing LT(adjusted hazard ratio:1.58;95%CI:1.21-2.07).Patients with preoperative sarcopenia had a longer intensive care unit stay,a high risk ratio of sepsis,and serious post-LT complications than those without sarcopenia.CONCLUSION Sarcopenia is prevalent in a substantial proportion of patients undergoing LT and is strongly and independently associated with higher a risk of mortality risk.

Neuroimaging features in a patient with non-ketotic hyperglycaemic seizures: A case report

BACKGROUND Non-ketotic hyperglycaemic(NKH)seizures are a rare neurological complication of diabetes caused by hyperglycaemia in non-ketotic and non-hyperosmotic states.The clinical characteristics of NKH seizures are atypical and lack unified diagnostic criteria,leading to potential misdiagnoses in the early stages of the disease.CASE SUMMARY This report presents a rare case of NKH seizures in a 52-year-old male patient with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus.We performed comprehensive magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)studies at admission,12 d post-admission,and 20 d post-discharge.The imaging techniques included contrast-enhanced head MRI,T2-weighted imaging(T2WI),fluid-attenuated inversion recovery(FLAIR),diffusion-weighted imaging,susceptibility-weighted imaging,magnetic reso-nance spectroscopy(MRS),and magnetic resonance venography.At the time of admission,T2WI and FLAIR of the cranial MRI showed that the left parieto-occipital cortex had gyrus-like swelling and high signal,and subcortical stripes had low signal.MRS showed a reduced N-acetylaspartate peak and increased creatine and choline peaks in the affected areas.A follow-up MRI 20 d later showed that the swelling and high signal of the left parieto-occipital cortex had disappeared,and the low signal of the subcortex had disappeared.CONCLUSION This case study provides valuable insights into the potential pathogenesis,diagnosis,and treatment of NKH seizures.The comprehensive MRI findings highlight the potential utility of various MRI sequences in diagnosing and characterizing NKH seizures.

Adverse effect of niobium and boron on hot deformation behavior of sulfur-containing steel

The hot deformation behaviors of sulfur-containing gear steel 20MnCr5 containing three different contents of Nb and B(0,0.021%Nb,and 0.024%Nb-0.0022%B)were investigated.Hot compression and tenssion tests were carried out by Gleeble3800 at the austenite region from 850 to 1150℃and the adverse effects of Nb and B were analyzed by the fracture,microstructure and precipitate observations.Hot compression tests showed that the proportions of instable area in hot processing maps of 0.021%Nb and Nb-B steels were higher and the deformability of Nb free steel was better.The tensile deformation experiments showed that the reduction areas of Nb free,0.021%Nb and Nb-B steels were 92%-99%,84%-98%and 67%-97%,respectively.The addition of Nb or Nb and B inhibited the dynamic recrystallization during hot deformation,and consequently,more deformed grains were then formed in 0.021%Nb and Nb-B steels thus to obtain the microstructure with worse uniformity and then deteriorate the deformability.In addition,the interaction between inclusions and microalloyed elements was also significant.NbC particles of 0.021%Nb and Nb-B steels dynamically precipitated during deformation and precipitated together with MnS thus to worsen the deformability,resulting in the decrease of reduction area.

Molybdenum(Mo)-based nanomaterials have been widely used in biomedical fields due to their various nanostructures and unique physical/chemical properties.Although various reviews have described the development of Mo-based materials in the biomedical field,an objective and comprehensive summary and analysis of research trends in this field is still rare.Therefore,we used the bibliometric analysis method to analyze all relevant literature on the biological application of Mobased nanomaterials in recent years.First,we use bibliometric tools to analyze the dataset by year,country/region,institution and research hotspot to obtain the research trends.Next,based on objectively identified research hotspots,the biomedical applications of Mo-based nanomaterials are reviewed comprehensively,mainly including sensors,cancer imaging/therapy and antibacterial applications.Finally,we discussed the application prospects and challenges of Mo-based materials.This article provides a new perspective to understand the current research progress and further promote the development of Mobased nanomaterials in biomedical research.

A 2 Kbits Low Power EEPROM for Passive RFID Tag IC

This paper presents a low power consumption and low cost electrically erasable programmable read-only memory(EEPROM) for radio frequency identification(RFID) tag chip. A read-write circuit with parallel input and serial output is proposed. Only one sensitive amplifier is used to read the data in memory,which can effectively reduce the power consumption of the read operation. Because the tag may be read or written while moving, the internal voltage may change in a wide range. Therefore, this paper designs a charge pump and its control circuit with wide voltage working range.The proposed EEPROM is integrated into an RFID tag chip and fabricated using a 180 nm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor(CMOS) process. Experimental results show that the circuit can work in the input voltage range of 1 V to 1.8 V, and the minimum current of read operation and write operation is 0.68 μA and 30 μA respectively, which has the characteristic of low power consumption.

Diabetes affects approximately 10.5%of adults worldwide,and its chronic complications lead to severely disabling sequelae and premature death,thus placing a heavy healthcare burden on both patients affected and society[1].China has experienced a dramatic increase in diabetes prevalence from 0.67%in 1980[2]to 12.8%in 2018[3]and has approximately one-quarter of people with diabetes worldwide[1].It is therefore essential to understand the epidemiologic characteristics of the chronic complications and co-morbidities of diabetes,and the current status of diabetes management to guide planning for appropriate diabetes care and intervention for these complications and co-morbidities at the national level[4-7].

Ensuring the health and safety of drinking water is crucial for both nations and their citizens.Since the 20th century,the disinfection of drinking water,effectively controlling pathogens in water sources,has become one of the significant advances in public health.However,the disinfectants used in the process,such as chlorine and chlorine dioxide,react with natural organic matter in the water to produce disinfection by-products(DBPs).Most of these DBPs contain chlorine,and if the source water contains bromine or iodine,brominated or iodinated DBPs,collectively referred to as Halogenated disinfection byproducts(X-DBPs),are formed.Numerous studies have found that X-DBPs pose potential risks to human health and the environment,leading to widespread concern.Mass spectrometry has become an important means of discovering new types of X-DBPs.This paper focuses on the study of methods for analyzing X-DBPs in drinking water using mass spectrometry.

Qianjin Wenwu decoction suppresses renal interstitial fibrosis by enhancing the degradation of extracellular matrix in mice with unilateral ureteral obstruction

Diabetic kidney disease(DKD)is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus(DM).Qianjin Wenwu decoction(QWD),a well-known traditional Korean medicine,has been used for the treatment of DKD,with satisfactory therapeutic effects.This study was designed to investigate the active components and mechanisms of action of QWD in the treatment of DKD.The results demonstrated that a total of 13 active components in five types were found in QwD,including flavonoids,flavonoid glycosides,phenylpropionic acids,saponins,coumarins,and lignins.Two key proteins,TGF-β1 and TIMP-1,were identified as the target proteins through molecular docking.Furthermore,QWD significantly suppressed Scr and BUN levels which increased after unilateral ureteral obstruction(UUO).Hematoxylin&eosin(H&E)and Masson staining results demonstrated that QWD significantly alleviated renal interstitial fibrosis in UUO mice.We also found that QWD promoted ECM degradation by regulating MMP-9/TIMP-1 homeostasis to improve renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis and interfere with the expression and activity of TGF-βl in DKD treatment.These findings explain the underlying mechanism of QWD for the treatment of DKD,and also provide methodological reference for investigating the mechanism of traditional medicine in the treatment of DKD.

Liquid-metal microgrid stretchable electronics based on bionic leaf veins with ultra-stretchability and high conductivity

Stretchable electronics that monitor joint activity and treat diseases based on liquid metal could be used in the development of healthcare applications.Such devices can be seamlessly integrated with human skin.However,most high-precision microstructures and complex patterns are difficult to fabricate due to the limitations of conventional fabrication solutions,resulting in suboptimal performance under practical conditions.Here,a liquid-metal stretchable system utilizing natural leaf veins was reported as microstructures,which was based on a biomimetic concept and utilized an all-solution process for the preparation of complex microstructures.The systems are ultra-high tensile(800% tensile strain),environmentally stable(20 days) and mechanically durable(300-cycle).The system can accurately recognize the wearer's finger bending level as well as simple gesture signals.At the same time,the system acts as a wearable heater,which can realize the fast heating behavior of heating up to 50℃in 3 min under the human body-safe voltage(1.5 V).The tensile stability is demonstrated by the heterogeneous integration of lasers(405 nm) with the system interconnects for a stretchable and wearable light source.
