A digital microfluidic system with 3D microstructures for single-cell culture

Despite the precise controllability of droplet samples in digital microfluidic(DMF)systems,their capability in isolating single cells for long-time culture is still limited:typically,only a few cells can be captured on an *** fabricating small-sized hydrophilic micropatches on an electrode aids single-cell capture,the actuation voltage for droplet transportation has to be significantly raised,resulting in a shorter lifetime for the DMF chip and a larger risk of damaging the *** this work,a DMF system with 3D microstructures engineered on-chip is proposed to form semi-closed micro-wells for efficient single-cell isolation and long-time *** optimum results showed that approximately 20%of the micro-wells over a 30×30 array were occupied by isolated single *** addition,low-evaporation-temperature oil and surfactant aided the system in achieving a low droplet actuation voltage of 36V,which was 4 times lower than the typical 150 V,minimizing the potential damage to the cells in the droplets and to the DMF *** exemplify the technological advances,drug sensitivity tests were run in our DMF system to investigate the cell response of breast cancer cells(MDA-MB-231)and breast normal cells(MCF-10A)to a widely used chemotherapeutic drug,Cisplatin(Cis).The results on-chip were consistent with those screened in conventional 96-well *** novel,simple and robust single-cell trapping method has great potential in biological research at the single cell level.

This paper presents the development and performance of micro-perforated panels(MPP)from natural fiber reinforced *** MPP is made of Polylactic Acid(PLA)reinforced with Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch Fiber(OPEFBF).The investigation was made by varying the fiber density,air gap,and perforation ratio to observe the effect on the Sound Absorption Coefficient(SAC)through the experiment in an impedance *** is found that the peak level of SAC is not affected,but the peak frequency shifts to lower frequency when the fiber density is *** phenomenon might be due to the presence of porosity in the inner wall of the *** or decreasing the air gap and perforation ratio shifts the peaks of acoustic absorption either way.

19世纪末至20世纪初,因为英殖民势力在马来亚的扩张,曾两度掀起了大量中国移民南渡至南洋的风潮。第一次的移民风潮主要是去当苦力的劳工为主,而且多数为文盲;第二次的移民风潮则是以文人、知识分子居多。在前者艰辛劳动的成果下,20世纪初的南洋社会经济得到蓬勃发展,此时部分华侨开始关心自身的民族文化与身份地位,设法在南洋坚守民族精神。处于这种时代背景之下,李健于1926年至1935年间以教育家及书法家的身份受邀到南洋,举办书画巡回展、办学校、创刊物等,让南洋的同胞开阔对中国传统书画精髓的认识,提倡坚守祖国文化艺术。期间,李健还将其仲父李瑞清开创的“金石书派”之书法传播到南洋,结识南洋的弟子郑一峰,并传授金石书法,为开拓南洋书法之先河尽一份贡献。学术界对李健在南洋的事迹稍有提及却只是简略而过,对于李健到南洋后的事业发展具体状况、艺术教育思想、其书画产生的影响、传授金石书法的来龙去脉以及李健离开南洋后的后续发展的等诸问题,并没有得到系统性的梳理,是以本文尝试在这方面进行整理。本文的研究首先对李健的生平经历与李瑞清影响下艺术思想的构建、书法风格的形成进行阐述。李健自小受到李瑞清的着重培养,受其艺术的影响深厚,因此李健的艺术思想构建与李瑞清是息息相关的。第二,对李健在南洋前期的历史渊源与来龙去脉、南洋时期李健的文化事业与活动以及南洋后期李健离开南洋后的笔墨遗迹进行分析与梳理,试图再呈现李健的八年的南洋旅居生涯。第三,李健在南洋期间曾传授李瑞清创立的“金石书派”书法于弟子郑一峰,通过观察李瑞清、李健与郑一峰的书法作品,分析其中相传的书风特点、书法实践创作及书法理论观点。最后对“金石书派”在南洋后续发展情况概略的阐述。至今,关于李健的研究资料尚有些缺乏零散,而在南洋的文献更是少之又少,不易搜寻。研究的过程中,通过访谈与参阅各种文献,尽可能的将李健散佚零碎的文献资料收集与整理,试图透过研究李健在南洋的事迹,洞察民国书法在南洋的流传,并以李健在马来亚唯一的入室弟子郑一峰为纽带,勾勒出李氏书法在海外的传播与后续发展。李健在民国时期,无论在中国或是从南洋所见,都是颇有艺术成就与艺术教育贡献的大家,在学术理论方面也有其独树一帜的见解,值得后人去研究的。本文旨在介绍李健书法在海外的流传,为研究海外书法的学者提供信息,并希望能达到抛砖引玉之效吸引学界对李健及海外书法流传以及李健书法研究的关注。

Neurodegenerative diseases,such as Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,and Huntington’s disease,affect millions of people *** efforts have been put into disease-related research,but few breakthroughs have been made in diagnostic and therapeutic *** vesicles(EVs)are heterogeneous cell-derived membrane structures that arise from the endosomal system or are directly separated from the plasma *** contain many biomolecules,including proteins,nucleic acids,and lipids,which can be transferred between different cells,tissues,or organs,thereby regulating cross-organ communication between cells during normal and pathological ***,EVs have been shown to participate in various aspects of neurodegenerative *** secretion and levels of EVs are closely related to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and contribute to disease *** studies have proposed EVs as therapeutic targets or biomarkers for neurodegenerative *** this review,we summarize and discuss the advanced research progress on EVs in the pathological processes of several neurodegenerative ***,we outline the latest research on the roles of EVs in neurodegenerative diseases and their therapeutic potential for the diseases.

Breathing dissipative soliton explosions in a bidirectional ultrafast fiber laser

Soliton explosions,among the most exotic dynamics,have been extensively studied on parameter invariant stationary ***,the explosion dynamics are still largcly unexplored in breathing dissipative solitons as a dynamic solution to many nonlincar ***,we report on the first observation of a breathing dissipative soliton explosion in a nct-normal-dispersion bidirectional ultrafast fiber *** breathing soliton explos ionscould be stimulated by the soliton buildup process or alteration of polarization *** breathing soliton pairs with intensive repulsion that is sensitive to initial conditions can also be triggered by multiple soliton explosions in the soliton buildup process instead of being triggered by varying polarization *** high bchavior similarity also exists in the breathing soliton buildup and explosion process owing to the common gain and loss *** addition,dissipative rogue waves were detected in the breathing soliton explosion,and the collision of breathing soliton significantly enhanced the amplitude of rogue waves,which is characteristic of the breathing solitons in a bidirectional fiber *** results shed new insights into complex dissipative soliton dynamics.

Degradation mechanism of rock under impact loadings by integrated investigation on crack and damage development

Failure of rock under impact loadings involves complex micro-fracturing and progressive damage. Strength increase and splitting failure have been observed during dynamic tests of rock materials. However, the failure mechanism still remains unclear. In this work, based on laboratory tests, numerical simulations with the particle flow code(PFC) were carried out to reproduce the micro-fracturing process of granite specimens. Shear and tensile cracks were both recorded to investigate the failure mode of rocks under different loading conditions. At the same time, a dynamic damage model based on the Weibull distribution was established to predict the deformation and degradation behavior of specimens. It is found that micro-cracks play important roles in controlling the dynamic deformation and failure process of rock under impact loadings. The sharp increase in the number of cracks may be the reason for the strength increase of rock under high strain rates. Tensile cracks tend to be the key reason for splitting failure of specimens. Numerical simulation of crack propagation by PFC can give vivid description of the failure process. However, it is not enough for evaluation of material degradation. The dynamic damage model is able to predict the stress-strain relationship of specimens reasonably well, and can be used to explain the degradation of specimens under impact loadings at macro-scale. Crack and damage can describe material degradation at different scales and can be used together to reveal the failure mechanism of rocks.

DEAR EDITOR Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs)are involved in many cellular processes via the arginine methylation of histone or non-histone *** examined the expression patterns of prmt4,prmt7,and prmt9 during embryogenesis in Xenopus using whole-mount in situ hybridization and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Xenopus prmt4 and prmt7 were expressed in the neural crest,brain,and spinal cord,and also detected in the eye,branchial arches,and heart at the tailbud *** print9 signals were not detected in Xenopus embryos until the late tailbud stage when weak expression was observed in the branchial *** RT-PCR indicated that the expression of prmt4 and prmt7 was up-regulated during the neurula stage,whereas prmt9 maintained its low expression until the late tailbud stage,consistent with the whole-mount in situ hybridization ***,the developmental expression patterns of these three print genes in Xenopus embryos provide a basis for further functional study of such genes.
