The daunting challenge of managing infections by Acinetobacter baumannii is linked to the pathogen’s extraordinary genomic plasticity in favor of antimicrobial resistance(AMR) development and a critical lack of new antibiotic in the pipeline for Gram-negative *** approaches to treatment and control of infectious diseases by *** are thus urgently needed in an imminent post-antibiotic *** have recently revealed in depth the chemical mechanisms by which(S)-blebbistatin releases reactive oxygen species(ROS),specifically hydroxyl radical(·OH),upon photolysis by blue light(Li et ***.2018,140(46)),while there have been no prior attempts on blebbistain analogues(Blebs) in anti-infective *** femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy,a blebbistatin analog(Blebs-1) was found to undergo photolysis rapidly in a zero-order reaction,in manners comparable to that of(S)-blebbistatin,suggesting ·OH can be released robustly in response to light *** in vitro bacteria killing assays,we thoroughly demonstrated that blue light efficiently photo-transform blebbistatin to release antibacterial hydroxyl radicals and kill isolates of extensively drug resistant(XDR) *** with high ***-dependence and concentration-dependence assays reveal that infection-relevant high-density of *** could be completely eliminated with 6 μM Blebs-1 under light irradiation(λex=420 nm) for 60 *** IC50 and MIC of the compound was 1.22 μM and 8.63 μM,*** addition,we found that other clinical XDR pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecium but not Klebsiella pneumoniae were similarly killed with high efficacy by Blebs-1 under blue light for 60 *** suggests that a variety of clinically important XDR pathogenic bacilli including *** can be successfully managed with Blebs in a low micromolar concentration *** treatment of Bleb-1

Cells undergo metabolic reprogramming to adapt to changes in nutrient availability, cellular activity, and transitions in cell states. The balance between glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration is crucial for energy production, and metabolic reprogramming stipulates a shift in such balance to optimize both bioenergetic efficiency and anabolic requirements. Failure in switching bioenergetic dependence can lead to maladaptation and pathogenesis. While cellular degradation is known to recycle precursor molecules for anabolism, its potential role in regulating energy production remains less explored. The bioenergetic switch between glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration involves transcription factors and organelle homeostasis, which are both regulated by the cellular degradation pathways. A growing body of studies has demonstrated that both stem cells and differentiated cells exhibit bioenergetic switch upon perturbations of autophagic activity or endolysosomal processes. Here, we highlighted the current understanding of the interplay between degradation processes, specifically autophagy and endolysosomes, transcription factors, endolysosomal signaling, and mitochondrial homeostasis in shaping cellular bioenergetics. This review aims to summarize the relationship between degradation processes and bioenergetics, providing a foundation for future research to unveil deeper mechanistic insights into bioenergetic regulation.

A prototype of full-color active-matrix micro-light-emitting diode(micro-LED)micro-display with a pixel density of 391 pixel per inch(ppi)using InGaN/AlGaInP heterogeneous integration is *** blue/green dual-color micro-LED arrays realized on a single metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD)-grown GaN-on-Si epiwafer and AlGaInP red micro-LED arrays are both monolithically fabricated,followed by the integration with a common complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)backplane via flip-chip bonding technology to form a doublelayer thin-film display ***-color images with decent color gamut and brightness are successfully displayed through the fine adjustment of driving current densities of RGB *** full-color display combines the advantages of high quantum efficiency of InGaN material on blue/green light and AlGaInP material on red light through heterogeneous integration and high pixel density through monolithic fabrication approach,demonstrating the feasibility and prospects of high brightness,good color performance,and high-resolution micro-LED microdisplays in future metaverse applications.

Sale before completion(***)is a common practice that real estate developers use to sell residential *** presale buyers are unable to inspect uncompleted units,developers may take advantage of asymmetric information and release information about quality to the market *** search theory also suggests that incomplete pricing information,especially for new products,will induce a less competitive market that is characterised by dispersed presale *** price dispersion be reduced if developers were required to provide more quality and pricing information?In this study,we argue that this is not necessarily the *** conduct a natural experiment using a new information disclosure ordinance governing first-hand residential sales in the Hong Kong SAR,*** find that the ordinance reduced the price dispersion of presale units with asymmetric information about property quality,but increased their price dispersion when limited pricing information(*** trading volume)was available in the *** a critical test,we further show that the ordinance increased price dispersion even more after the units were *** suggests that the ordinance has indeed made presale pricing more difficult because developers are no longer allowed to use different strategies to test market demand.

Outdoor air pollution has been recently classified as a class I human carcinogen by the World Health Organization(WHO). Cumulative evidence from across the globe shows that polluted air is associated with increased risk of lung, head and neck, and nasopharyngeal cancers—all of which affect the upper aerodigestive tract. Importantly, these cancers have been previously linked to smoking. In this article, we review epidemiologic and experimental evidence of the genotoxic and mutagenic effects of air pollution on DNA, purportedly a key mechanism for cancer development. The alarming increase in cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract in Asia suggests a need to focus government efforts and research on reducing air pollution, promoting clean energy, and investigating the carcinogenic effects of air pollution on humans.

Objective:To systematically map the stepwise events leading to deoxyelephantopin-induced cell death of HCT116 human colorectal cancer cells and evaluate the effectiveness of deoxyelephantopin in ***:HCT116 cells were treated with deoxyelephantopin at various concentrations and time *** was confirmed by the detection of autophagosomes and autophagosomal proteins by electron microscopy and Western blotting assays,respectively,and then validated by siRNA *** addition,apoptosis was confirmed by the detection of apoptosis-related *** intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS)level was measured using flow *** growth inhibitory effect of deoxyelephantopin was further evaluated in vivo using a mouse xenograft ***:Deoxyelephantopin firstly elevated ROS production,which then triggered autophagic flux with the accumulation of autophagosomal proteins including LC3 A/B,ATG5,and ATG7,followed by the induction of apoptosis via the intrinsic and extrinsic ***-treatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine,a ROS inhibitor,reversed both apoptosis and *** knockdown of LC3 prevented apoptosis induction which confirmed that deoxyelephantopin induced autophagy-dependent apoptosis in HCT116 *** of ROS also activated apoptosis via the mitogen-activated protein kinases signaling ***,deoxyelephantopin also inhibited the PI3 K/AKT/mTOR pathway,which then released the inhibition of *** vivo study further showed that deoxyelephantopin significantly suppressed the growth of HCT116 subcutaneous xenograft in nude ***:Our findings revealed that deoxyelephantopin elevates oxidative stress and induces ROS-dependent autophagy followed by apoptosis in HCT116 cells via the concerted modulation of multiple signaling *** findings further support the development of deoxyelephantopin as a therapeutic agent for colorectal cancer.

The deployment of photonic integrated circuits(PICs)necessitates an integration platform that is scalable,high-throughput,cost-effective,and *** we present a monolithic InP on SOI platform to synergize the advantages of two mainstream photonic integration platforms:Si photonics and InP *** monolithic InP/SOI platform is realized through the selective growth of both InP sub-micron wires and large dimension InP membranes on industry-standard(001)-oriented silicon-on-insulator(SOI)*** epitaxial InP is in-plane,dislocation-free,site-controlled,intimately positioned with the Si device layer,and placed right on top of the buried oxide layer to form“InP-on-insulator”.These attributes allow for the realization of various photonic functionalities using the epitaxial InP,with efficient light interfacing between the III-V devices and the Si-based *** exemplify the potential of this InP/SOI platform for integrated photonics through the demonstration of lasers with different cavity designs including subwavelength wires,square cavities,and *** results here mark a critical step forward towards fully-integrated Si-based PICs.

Effect of Rorrico, extracted from group of Chinese medicines, on influenza A and H1N1 infections

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic and preventive effects of Rorrico on influenza, especially influenza A viral infection, including swine flu(H1N1)in ***: Eighty-nine subjects were recruited in Hong Kong and Macao, and divided into treatment group(TG) and prevention group(PG) based on their influenza A and swine flu symptoms. All subjects were prescribed Rorrico or placebo, and monitored by a Chinese medicine practitioner. Blood samples were collected before and after 7-day Rorrico or placebo treatment for laboratory ***: After treatment, there were some full recoveries and obvious relief of onset symptoms in the TG. Blood test results showed that Rorrico produced(a) no adverse effects on subjects' renal andliver functions, muscle enzyme and hematological status,(b) no up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor-a and interleukin-18 in both TG and PG,(c) mild yet statistically significant elevation of plasma mannose-binding lectin(MBL) in ***: Rorrico has no up-regulating effect on the participants' immune response, or, equally likely, the immuno-modulatory effects of Rorrico do not non-specifically or unnecessarily promote inflammation when not required. It is possible that oral administration of Rorrico can promote hepatic synthesis of MBL in healthy PG subjects, thereby conferring increased protection against infection.
