Conversion of Malaysian low-rank coal to mesoporous activated carbon:Structure characterization and adsorption properties

Malaysian Selantik low-rank coal(SC)was used as a precursor to prepare a form of mesoporous activated carbon(SC-AC)with greater surface area(SA)via a microwave induced KOH-activation *** characteristics of the SC and SC-AC were evaluated by the iodine number,ash content,bulk density,and moisture content The structure and surface characterization was carried out using pore structure analysis(BET),scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EdX),X-ray diffraction(XRd),Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR),elemental analysis(CHNS),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),and determination of the point of zero charge(pH(PZC)).These results signify a mesoporous structure of SC-AC with an increase of ca.1160 times(BET SA=1094.3 m^2·g^-1)as compared with raw SC without activation(BET SA=1.23 m^2·g^-1).The adsorptive properties of the SC-AC with methylene blue(MB)was carried out at variable adsorbent dose(0.2-1.6 g·L^-1),solution pH(2-12),initial MB concentrations(25-400 mg·L^-1),and contact time(0-290 min)using batch mode *** kinetic profiles follow pseudo-second order kinetics and the equilibrium uptake of MB conforms to the Langmuir model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 491.7 mg g^-1 at 303 *** functions revealed a spontaneous endothermic adsorption *** mechanism of adsorption included mainly electrostatic attractions,hydrogen bonding interaction,andπ-πstacking *** work shows that Malaysian Selantik low-rank coal is a promising precursor for the production of low-cost and efficient mesoporous activated carbon with substantive surface area.

Asymptotic Approximations of Apostol-Tangent Polynomials in Terms of Hyperbolic Functions

The tangent polynomials Tn(z)are generalization of tangent numbers or the Euler zigzag numbers *** particular,Tn(0)=*** polynomials are closely related to Bernoulli,Euler and Genocchi *** of the extensions and analogues of special polynomials that attract the attention of several mathematicians is the Apostol-type *** of these Apostol-type polynomials is the Apostol-tangent polynomials Tn(z,λ).Whenλ=1,Tn(z,1)=Tn(z).The use of hyperbolic functions to derive asymptotic approximations of polynomials together with saddle point method was applied to the Bernoulli and Euler polynomials by Lopez and *** same method was applied to the Genocchi polynomials by Corcino et *** essential steps in applying the method are(1)to obtain the integral representation of the polynomials under study using their exponential generating functions and the Cauchy integral formula,and(2)to apply the saddle point *** is found out that the method is applicable to Apostol-tangent *** a result,asymptotic approximation of Apostol-tangent polynomials in terms of hyperbolic functions are derived for large values of the parameter n and uniform approximation with enlarged region of validity are also ***,higher-order Apostol-tangent polynomials are *** the same method,asymptotic approximation of higherorder Apostol-tangent polynomials in terms of hyperbolic functions are derived and uniform approximation with enlarged region of validity are also *** is important to note that the consideration of Apostol-type polynomials and higher order Apostol-type polynomials were not done by Lopez and *** part is first done in this *** accuracy of the approximations are illustrated by plotting the graphs of the exact values of the Apostol-tangent and higher-order Apostol-tangent polynomials and their corresponding approximate values for specific values of the parameters n,λand m.

Evolution of superconductivity and charge order in pressurized RbV_(3)Sb_(5)

The kagome metals AV_(3)Sb_(5)(A=K,Rb,Cs)under ambient pressure exhibit an unusual charge order,from which superconductivity *** this work,by applying hydrostatic pressure using a liquid pressure medium and carrying out electrical resistance measurements for RbV_(3)Sb_(5),we find that the charge order becomes suppressed under a modest pressure pc(1.4 GPaducting transition temperature Tc is *** is then gradually weakened with further increase of pressure and reaches a minimum around 14.3 GPa,before exhibiting another{maximum}around 22.8 GPa,signifying the presence of a second superconducting *** normal state resistance anomalies are found to be associated with the second superconducting dome,similar to KV_(3)Sb_(5).Our findings point to qualitatively similar temperature-pressure phase diagrams in KV_(3)Sb_(5) and RbV_(3)Sb_(5),{and suggest a close link}between the second superconducting dome and the high-pressure resistance anomalies.

The quasi-two-dimensional kagome materials AV3Sb5(A=K,Rb,Cs) were found to be a prime example of kagome superconductors,a new quantum platform to investigate the interplay between electron correlation effects,topology and geometric *** this review,we report recent progress on the experimental and theoretical studies of AV3Sb5and provide a broad picture of this fast-developing field in order to stimulate an expanded search for unconventional kagome *** review the electronic properties of AV3Sb5,the experimental measurements of the charge density wave state,evidence of time-reversal symmetry breaking and other potential hidden symmetry breaking in these materials.A variety of theoretical proposals and models that address the nature of the time-reversal symmetry breaking are ***,we review the superconducting properties of AV3Sb5,especially the potential pairing symmetries and the interplay between superconductivity and the charge density wave state.

High surface area and mesoporous activated carbon from KOH-activated dragon fruit peels for methylene blue dye adsorption:Optimization and mechanism study

In this study,an alternative precursor for production of activated carbon was introduced using dragon fruit(Hylocereus costaricensis)peel(dFP).Moreover,KOH was used as a chemical activator in the thermal carbonization process to convert dFP into activated carbon(dFPAC).In order to accomplish this research,several approaches were employed to examine the elemental composition,surface properties,amorphous and crystalline nature,essential active group,and surface morphology of the *** BrunauerEmmettTeller test demonstrated a mesoporous structure of the dFPAC has a high surface area of 756.3 m2g *** cationic dye Methylene Blue(MB)was used as a probe to assess the efficiency of dFPAC towards the removal of MB dye from aqueous *** effects of adsorption input factors(*** dose(A:0.040.12 g L 1),pH(B:310),and temperature(C:3050℃))were investigated and optimized using statistical analysis(*** design(BBd)).The adsorption kinetic model can be best categorized as the pseudofirst order(PFO).Whereas,the adsorption isotherm model can be best described by Langmuir model,with maximum adsorption capacity of dFPAC for MB dye was 195.2 mg g 1 at 50℃.The adsorption mechanism of MB by dFPAC surface was attributed to the electrostatic interaction,pp interaction,and ***,the results support the ability of dFP to be a promising precursor for production of highly porous activated carbon suitable for removal of cationic dyes(***).

Probing the Cell Cycle with Flow Cytometry

Flow cytometry is a versatile technique to study different aspects of the cell cycle from subpopulations of cells to detailed cell kinetic information. In this paper a basic review of cell kinetic parameters is presented followed by detailed descriptions of the different flow cytometric methodologies that can be used to extract pertinent information for a particular study. The methodologies range from simple dNA profile analysis, the use of bromodeoxyuridine to cell cycle-associated proteins such as the cyclins.

Structural Study of Cellulose-Iron Oxide Composite Materials

There are limited structural studies of iron oxide coated cellulose materials despite their use as adsorbents for the removal of waterborne arsenic species. This study reports on the structural characterization of cellulose-iron oxide composites at variable iron oxide content using spectroscopy methods (Raman, solids 13C NMR, powder X-ray diffraction (pXRd)) and thermal gravi-metric analysis (TGA). Iron oxide was supported onto cellulose (ca. 25 wt.%) without significant loss in the Fe coating efficiency, where the accessibility of the biopolymer -OH groups affect the coating efficiency and yield of the iron oxide-cellulose composite. Isotherm adsorption studies for cellulose, iron oxide species and the cellulose composite materials with roxarsone (3-nitro- 4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid) were studied to characterize the surface chemical properties of these potential adsorbent materials.

Pilot Test of the Permeable Reactive Barrier for Removing Uranium from the Flooded Gunnar Pit

This work reports on applying iron oxide coated sand (IOCS) media in an experimental permeable reactive barrier to remove uranium (U) species from uranium containing water. A field study was conducted at the legacy Gunnar uranium mine & mill site that was abandoned in the 1960s with limited to no decommissioning. The flooded Gunnar mine pit presently contains about 3.2 million m3 of water contaminated by dissolved U (1.2 mg/L), Ra-226 (0.4 Bq/L), and minor concentrations of other contaminants (As, Se, etc.). The water is seeping over the pit rim into Lake Athabasca, posing potential environmental and health concerns. IOCS media can be used to immobilize uranium species through an adsorption process. Herein, the preparation of hydrous ferric oxide sorbents and their supported forms onto silica sands is described. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and powder X-ray diffraction (pXRd) were used for structural characterization. The adsorption properties of the IOCS sorbent media were modeled by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, where a maximum uranium uptake capacity was estimated. Bench-scale adsorption kinetic experiments were also performed before moving to a field trial. Based on these lab results and input on field-scale parameters, a pilot permeable reactive barrier was fabricated and a field test conducted near the Gunnar pit in June 2019. This pilot test provided technical data and information needed for designing a full-scale permeable barrier that employs the IOCS media. This approach can be applied for in-situ water treatment at Gunnar and other legacy uranium sites.
