This paper studies the sensor selection problem for random field estimation in wireless sensor networks. The authors first prove that selecting a set of I sensors that minimize the estimation error under the D-optimal criterion is Np-complete. The authors propose an iterative algorithm to pursue a suboptimal solution. Furthermore, in order to improve the bandwidth and energy efficiency of the wireless sensor networks, the authors propose a best linear unbiased estimator for a Gaussian random field with quantized measurements and study the corresponding sensor selection problem. In the case of unknown covariance matrix, the authors propose an estimator for the covariance matrix using measurements and also analyze the sensitivity of this estimator. Simulation results show the good performance of the proposed algorithms.

We consider the random field estimation problem with parametric trend in wireless sensor networks where the field can be described by unknown parameters to be estimated. Due to the limited resources, the network selects only a subset of the sensors to perform the estimation task with a desired performance under the D-optimal criterion. We propose a greedy sampling scheme to select the sensor nodes according to the information gain of the sensors. A distributed algorithm is also developed by consensus-based incremental sensor node selection through information quality computation for and message exchange among neighboring sensors. Simulation results show the good performance of the proposed algorithms.

This paper is concerned with the estimation problem for discrete-time stochastic linear systems with possible single unit delay and multiple packet dropouts. Based on a proposed uncertain model in data transmission, an optimal full-order filter for the state of the system is presented, which is shown to be of the form of employing the received outputs at the current and last time instants. The solution to the optimal filter is given in terms of a riccati difference equation governed by two binary random variables. The optimal filter is reduced to the standard Kalman filter when there are no random delays and packet dropouts. The steady-state filter is also investigated. A sufficient condition for the existence of the steady-state filter is given. The asymptotic stability of the optimal filter is analyzed.

Generally, localization is a nonlinear problem, while linearization is used to simplify this problem. reasonable approximations could be achieved when signal-to-noise ratio (SNr) is large enough. Energy is a critical resource in wireless sensor networks, and system lifetime needs to be prolonged through the use of energy efficient strategies during system operation. In this paper, a closed-form solution for received signal strength (rSS)-based source localization in wireless sensor network (WSN) is obtained. A sensor selection method is proposed to improve the localization accuracy as well as to save energy consumption. By selecting only a limited number of sensor nodes based on the model accuracy and geometry structure analysis, localization performance is improved, and energy consumption is reduced. In addition, extensive simulations are presented to demonstrate that the estimation performance with the proposed sensor selection method is better than that without sensor selection.

Consensus theory and noncooperative game theory respectively deal with cooperative and noncooperative interactions among multiple players/agents. They provide a natural framework for road pricing design, since each motorist may myopically optimize his or her own utility as a function of road price and collectively communicate with his or her friends and neighbors on traffic situation at the same time. This paper considers the road pricing design by using game theory and consensus theory. For the case where a system supervisor broadcasts information on the overall system to each agent, we present a variant of standard fictitious play called average strategy fictitious play(ASFp) for large-scale repeated congestion *** a weighted running average of all other players actions is assumed to be available to each player. The ASFp reduces the burden of both information gathering and information processing for each player. Compared to the joint strategy fictitious play(JSFp) studied in the literature, the updating process of utility functions for each player is avoided. We prove that there exists at least one pure strategy Nash equilibrium for the congestion game under investigation, and the players actions generated by the ASFp with inertia(players reluctance to change their previous actions) converge to a Nash equilibrium almost surely. For the case without broadcasting, a consensus protocol is introduced for individual agents to estimate the percentage of players choosing each resource, and the convergence property of players action profile is still ensured. The results are applied to road pricing design to achieve socially local optimal trip timing. Simulation results are provided based on the real traffic data for the singapore case study.

This paper considers the state feedback stabilization over finite-state fading channels, where the stochastic characteristic of time-varying fading channels is assumed to be driven by a finite-state random process. The finite-state process is used to represent different channel fading amplitudes and/or to model different configurations of the overall physical environment. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for stabilization over finite-state Markov fading *** the case of finite-state i.i.d. fading channels, explicit network requirements for stabilization are presented for both single-input case and multi-input case. Our results cover some existing results as special cases.

This paper studies two kinds of multi-player pursuit-evasion games in 3-D space: Two-pursuer one-evader game and multi-pursuer one-evader game. The main challenges are that the evader has faster speed than a group of pursuers and the moving directions of the pursuers and faster evader are unknown to each other. First, the concept of occupied angle is introduced to represent the dominated spaces by the pursuers. Then, escape algorithm and pursuit algorithm are designed for the evader and pursuers, respectively. Finally, escape condition and capture condition of the faster evader and pursuers are presented. Some simulation examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.
