The increasing antibiotic treatment failure is attributed to the increasing emergence of drug-resistant bacteria,and the attachment of these bacteria to the surface of implantation materials often leads to dangerous bacterial biofilm formation on the implant ***,this creates an urgent need to develop new antibacterial material and antifouling ***(PDA),as a musselinspired material,has many advantageous properties,such as a simple preparation procedure,excellent hydrophilicity and biocompatibility,strong adhesive performance,easy functionalization,outstanding photothermal conversion effect,and strong quenching *** has increasingly attracted much interest not only for its adherence to virtually all types of surfaces but also as it provides a simple and versatile approach to functionalize material surfaces to obtain a variety of multifunctional *** this review,we mainly focus on the preparation and polymerization mechanism of PDA systems and then provide a compilation of several reports on the PDA surface modification of various nanomaterials and material surfaces,including metals,metal oxides,carbons,and ***,we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of polydopamine surface-modified nanomaterials.

Effects of a Regional Chinese Diet and Its Vitamin Supplementation on Proliferation of Human Esophageal Cancer Cell Lines

Objective To study the effects of a local diet popular in Yanling region （YT diet） on the proliferation of two human cell lines （Eca-109 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma line and HL7702 normal liver epithelial cell line） in rats by a sero-physiological approach. Methods Male SD rats were divided into six groups and fed respectively with a conventional diet and the YT diet （one of the five experimental diets） supplemented with two vitamin mixtures （Mix.1： vitamins A, E, and folic acid; Mix.2：mix.1 plus riboflavin and vitamin C） at two different doses. On the 30th day, sera were collected from the rats and added into a medium for cell culture, with 10% FBS used as a serum control. The effects were assessed by MTT assay, DNA synthesis and flow cytometry assays. Results Compared with the control, the sera from rats fed with the YT diet significantly promoted the proliferation of Eca-109 cells, which was, however, reversed by the supplementation with two vitamin mixtures at high doses. Surprisingly, the same treatment produced contrary effects on HL7702 cells as compared with Eca-109 cells. Conclusion The sera from rats fed with the YT diet could promote the proliferation of human esophageal cancer cell line Eca-109, whereas the sera from those fed with the YT diet supplemented with vitamin mixtures might have inhibitory effects on the proliferation of Eca-109 ceils.

Longitudinal assessment of peripheral organ metabolism and the gut microbiota in an APP/PS1 transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease not only affects the brain,but also induces metabolic dysfunction in peripheral organs and alters the gut *** aim of this study was to investigate systemic changes that occur in Alzheimer’s disease,in particular the association between changes in peripheral organ metabolism,changes in gut microbial composition,and Alzheimer’s disease *** do this,we analyzed peripheral organ metabolism and the gut microbiota in amyloid precursor protein-presenilin 1(APP/PS1)transgenic and control mice at 3,6,9,and 12 months of ***-month-old APP/PS1 mice exhibited cognitive impairment,Alzheimer’s disease-related brain changes,distinctive metabolic disturbances in peripheral organs and fecal samples(as detected by untargeted metabolomics sequencing),and substantial changes in gut microbial composition compared with younger APP/PS1 ***,a strong correlation emerged between the gut microbiota and kidney metabolism in APP/PS1 *** findings suggest that alterations in peripheral organ metabolism and the gut microbiota are closely related to Alzheimer’s disease development,indicating potential new directions for therapeutic strategies.

Studies on the Photoperiod Sensitive Characters of Male Fertility Alteration of Peiai64S' Main Male Genic Sterile Gene

Peiai64S, an indica male sterile rice with a male fertility alteration under different environments, is selected from the offspring of indica rice crossed with Nongken58S. Nongken58S, a japonica pho-toperiod sensitive genie male sterile rice (PGMS), deriving from a natural mutant plant individual of normal japonica rice variety, Nongken58, is used as a male sterile gene donor of Peiai64S. But Peiai64S is not a typical PGMS rice, the male fertility is sensitive to temperature just as thermo-sensitive genie male sterile rice (TGMS). We have selected typical PGMS plants in F2 population of Peiai64S× Nongken58, whose ratio of fertile plants to sterile plants is nearly 3:1. The sterility inheritance conformed to one pair of gene segregation model. The result indicates the main male sterile gene in Peiai64S is not other than the PGMS gene, and comes from Nongken58S. The genetic background affects effective expression of the PGMS gene. This suggests that we ought to focus on optimizing the genetic background of the PGMS gene in PGMS rice breeding, and select an ideal genetic background as a transgenic background in molecular breeding.

New insight into the origin and evolution of the flora and fauna of Hainan Island, China

The origin of the biota of Hainan Island, China, remains a fundamental scientific problem. Comparative studies on the biota, geological tectonics, and paleomagnetism proposed that during the Eocene, Hainan Island connected Vietnam and Guangxi, and then moved to the southeast to reach its present location. This review mainly discusses its biota origin from molecular phylogeny and palaeobotanical research. The formation and evolution of the biological groups of Hainan Island were identified via research on their genomes, phylogeny, and molecular biogeography. This research showed that the genera and species that appeared and diverged early in their evolution(i.e., before the Miocene) can be explained by the land connection between Hainan Island, Vietnam, and Guangxi during the Eocene-Oligocene. According to Southeast Asian tectonic theory, in the Middle Miocene(at about 15 million years ago), Hainan Island had moved to its present position. The population and genetic divergence of species with late divergence times(after 15 Ma) can be reasonably explained by the close proximity(or land connection) between Hainan Island and the Leizhou Peninsula, enabling genetic communication between Hainan Island and the Chinese mainland, but have exceptional cases. Conclusions have been obtained through palaeobotanical studies, showing that in the Eocene-Oligocene period, southwest China and Hainan Island had subtropical vegetation and flora. However, the fossil group in southeast China(in Maoming, near present-day Hainan Island) in the Late Eocene indicated a tropical rainforest vegetation and flora. This suggests that in the Paleogene, Hainan Island may have been located near or on the southwest border of Guangxi and northern Vietnam, rather than in its present location. The floristic division of the flora of Hainan Island basically presents a northeast-southwest inclined distribution pattern. The potential mechanism and clinical application value of remote ischemic conditioning in stroke

Some studies have confirmed the neuroprotective effect of remote ischemic conditioning against stroke. Although numerous animal researches have shown that the neuroprotective effect of remote ischemic conditioning may be related to neuroinflammation, cellular immunity, apoptosis, and autophagy, the exact underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. This review summarizes the current status of different types of remote ischemic conditioning methods in animal and clinical studies and analyzes their commonalities and differences in neuroprotective mechanisms and signaling pathways. Remote ischemic conditioning has emerged as a potential therapeutic approach for improving stroke-induced brain injury owing to its simplicity, non-invasiveness, safety, and patient tolerability. Different forms of remote ischemic conditioning exhibit distinct intervention patterns, timing, and application range. Mechanistically, remote ischemic conditioning can exert neuroprotective effects by activating the Notch1/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt signaling pathway, improving cerebral perfusion, suppressing neuroinflammation, inhibiting cell apoptosis, activating autophagy, and promoting neural regeneration. While remote ischemic conditioning has shown potential in improving stroke outcomes, its full clinical translation has not yet been achieved.

Effect of order–disorder transition on thermodynamic and electronic properties of σ and χ phases in W–Re alloy: the first-principles calculation

The Tungsten-Rhenium(W-Re) alloys,celebrated for their high melting point,strength at elevated temperatures,electrical resistivity,and radiation resistance,have been widely utilized in high-temperature components,aerospace,electronics,and nuclear *** constituents of the topologically close-packed(TCP) phases,the sigma phase(σ) and chi phase(χ) formed within W-Re alloys wield considerable influence on the mechanical properties and the stability of the *** calculations were utilized in the present work to explore the structural,thermodynamic,and electronic properties of both ordered and disordered configurations within the σ and χ phases,culminating in a systematic elucidation of the higher phase stability exhibited by the ordered *** is found that the bulk modulus of these two phases is directly proportional to the concentration of Re in the alloy,while the equilibrium volume is inversely *** thermodynamic parameters of the σ and χ phases are calculated via the mean-field potential *** similar trends observed in the isobaric heat capacity,enthalpy increment,and entropy change curves for these two phases suggest they possess comparable thermodynamic *** is noteworthy that the contribution of ionic vibrations predominantly affects the isobaric heat capacity,while the contribution of thermal electronic excitations increases linearly with *** the structure and thermodynamic properties of TCP phases in W-Re alloys at low temperatures has profound significance for optimizing material performance,microstructures features,establishing theoretical foundations,and predicting material behavior.

Modification of Maxwell model for conductivity prediction of carbon nanotubes-filled polymer composites with tunneling effect

Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have garnered great attention in recent years due to their outstanding electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The incorporation of small amounts of CNTs in polymers can substantially improve the sensitivity of the polymer's electrical conductivity. This paper presents a modified Maxwell model to evaluate the electrical conductivity of CNTs-filled polymer composites by introducing a transition zone to account for the tunneling effect. In this modified Maxwell model, the CNTs-filled polymer composite is modeled as a three-phase composite, consisting of a matrix(polymer), inclusions(CNTs), and a transition zone(tunneling zone). The effective electrical conductivity(EEC) of the composite is calculated based on the volume fractions and electrical conductivities of the matrix, inclusions, and transition zone. The model's validity is confirmed through the use of available test data, which demonstrates its capability to accurately capture the nonlinear conductivity behavior observed in CNTs-polymer composites. This study offers valuable insights into the design of high-performance conductive polymer nanocomposites, and enhances the understanding of electrical conduction mechanisms in CNT-dispersed polymer composites.
