Boosting Multi-modal Ocular Recognition via Spatial Feature Reconstruction and Unsupervised Image Quality Estimation

In the daily application of an iris-recognition-at-a-distance(IAAD)system,many ocular images of low quality are acquired.As the iris part of these images is often not qualified for the recognition requirements,the more accessible periocular regions are a good complement for recognition.To further boost the performance of IAAD systems,a novel end-to-end framework for multi-modal ocular recognition is proposed.The proposed framework mainly consists of iris/periocular feature extraction and matching,unsupervised iris quality assessment,and a score-level adaptive weighted fusion strategy.First,ocular feature reconstruction(OFR)is proposed to sparsely reconstruct each probe image by high-quality gallery images based on proper feature maps.Next,a brand new unsupervised iris quality assessment method based on random multiscale embedding robustness is proposed.Different from the existing iris quality assess-ment methods,the quality of an iris image is measured by its robustness in the embedding space.At last,the fusion strategy exploits the iris quality score as the fusion weight to coalesce the complementary information from the iris and periocular regions.Extensive experi-mental results on ocular datasets prove that the proposed method is obviously better than unimodal biometrics,and the fusion strategy can significantly improve therecognition performance.

CASIA-Iris-Africa:A Large-scale African Iris Image Database

Iris biometrics is a phenotypic biometric trait that has proven to be agnostic to human natural physiological changes.Research on iris biometrics has progressed tremendously,partly due to publicly available iris databases.Various databases have been available to researchers that address pressing iris biometric challenges such as constraint,mobile,multispectral,synthetics,long-distance,contact lenses,liveness detection,etc.However,these databases mostly contain subjects of Caucasian and Asian docents with very few Africans.Despite many investigative studies on racial bias in face biometrics,very few studies on iris biometrics have been published,mainly due to the lack of racially diverse large-scale databases containing sufficient iris samples of Africans in the public domain.Furthermore,most of these databases contain a relatively small number of subjects and labelled images.This paper proposes a large-scale African database named Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Automation(CASIA)-Iris-Africa that can be used as a complementary database for the iris recognition community to mediate the effect of racial biases on Africans.The database contains 28717 images of 1023 African subjects(2046 iris classes)with age,gender,and ethnicity attributes that can be useful in demographically sensitive studies of Africans.Sets of specific application protocols are incorporated with the database to ensure the database’s variability and scalability.Performance results of some open-source state-of-the-art(SOTA)algorithms on the database are presented,which will serve as baseline performances.The relatively poor performances of the baseline algorithms on the proposed database despite better performance on other databases prove that racial biases exist in these iris recognition algorithms.

Implementation of integrated nonlocal sensing for object shape and rotational speed

The expeditious acquisition of information pertaining to objects through the utilization of quantum technology has been a perennial issue of concern.So far,the efficient utilization of information from dynamic objects with limited resources remains a significant challenge.Here,we realize a nonlocal integrated sensing of the object's amplitude and phase information by combining digital spiral imaging with the correlated orbital angular momentum states.The amplitude information is utilized for object identification,while the phase information enables us to determine the rotational speed.We demonstrate the nonlocal identification of a rotating object's shape,irrespective of its rotational symmetry,and introduce the concept of the correlated rotational Doppler effect,establishing a fundamental connection between this effect and the classical rotational Doppler effect,i.e.,that both rely on extracting crucial information from the spiral spectrum of objects.The present study highlights a promising pathway towards the realization of quantum remote sensing and imaging.

Applying heteroatom co-doped carbon nanotube for manifesting high performance in the electrochemical reduction of aqueous nitrogen oxide by gold nanoparticles

Electrochemical NO-to-NH_(3) under ambient conditions could be a viable alternative having advantages in terms of energy consumption and exhaust gas recycling of NO,replacing a traditional ammonia synthesis method of the Haber–Bosch process.In synthesizing boron(B-)and nitrogen(N-)co-doped carbon nanotube(CNT)based gold(Au)catalysts,B-dopants elevate the conductivity of carbon nanotube by sp2 hybridization on graphene and implant B–N domains within the graphene layer,and result in facilitating the embedding amount of Au accompanied by high dispersibility with low particle size.Theoretical density functional theory(DFT)calculations elucidate that the electron cloud transmitted from B-dopant to the active site of Au induces the Lewis acidic site,and the O-distal pathway occurs following a spontaneous reaction.Increment of the electron-deficient B-doping area accompanied by N-defects and B–O edges retains the major valence state of Au as Au^(δ+),and suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)by repulsing the hindrance of H*.This record exhibits the highest faradaic efficiency(FE)of 94.7%,and NH_(3) yield rate of 1877.4μg·h^(-1)·mg_(cat)^(-1),which is the optimal yield over energy consumption in the field of the ambient reduction of aqueous NO.

The most important method of understanding liquefaction-induced engineering failures comes from the investigation and analysis of earthquake damage.In May 2021,the Maduo M_(s)7.4 earthquake occurred on the Tibetan Plateau of China.The most representative engineering disaster caused by this earthquake was bridge damage on liquefied sites.In this study,the mutual relationships between the anti-liquefaction pre-design situation,the ground motion intensity,the site liquefaction severity,and the bridge damage state for this earthquake were systematically analyzed for typical bridge damage on the liquefied sites.Using field survey data and the current Chinese industry code,simulations of the liquefaction scenarios at typical bridge sites were performed for the pre-design seismic ground motion before the earthquake and the seismic ground motion during the earthquake.By combining these results with post-earthquake investigation results,the reason for the serious bridge damage resulting from this earthquake is revealed,and the necessary conditions for avoiding serious seismic damage to bridges built in liquefiable sites is presented.

Enhanced Removal of Phenols by MIZ-Cu Nanozyme Exhibiting Laccase-like Activity and Broader Adaptability to Temperature and pH Conditions

Phenolic compounds,classified as persistent organic pollutants,pose a significant threat to both human health and environmental safety.Therefore,the efficient removal of phenolic substances from water is of paramount importance.Laccase,a multicopper oxidase,is commonly utilized for the efficient removal of phenolic contaminants from water due to its highly effective catalytic activity towards phenolic compounds.However,natural laccase exhibits certain limitations that impede its practical implementation in industrial settings,including a restricted pH activity range,diminished enzymatic efficacy at elevated temperatures,and substantial cost implications.In this work,we prepared a nanozyme(MIZ-Cu,MIZ:2-methylimidazole)with laccase-like activity by coordinating 2-methylimidazole and copper.This nanozyme overcomes the deactivation issues observed in natural laccase under high temperature and alkaline conditions.The catalytic activity of the MIZ-Cu towards phenolic compounds surpasses that of natural laccase across a wide range of temperature and pH conditions.Under pH=9,80℃,and 500 mmol/L NaCl conditions,the removal rate of four phenols(catechol,hydroquinone,resorcinol,and phloroglucinol)by MIZ-Cu was much higher than that of natural laccase.The results also demonstrate exceptional removal rates in natural aquatic environments,thereby presenting a promising approach for the treatment of phenol-containing wastewater originating from industrial facilities.

843年查理曼帝国分裂,在否定东部罗马帝国即拜占庭与东部教会即正教的基础上,西欧地域—族群共同体认同潜滋暗长。其一,西欧民族鄙夷(古)罗马(拜占庭),否定帝国,认同自我,民族认同觉醒。其二,历史文本为民族认同进而锻造民族国家提供了历史支撑。中世纪西欧民族认同亦渐次见诸历史文本,历史文本不仅是西欧民族认同生成系谱,更是其民族国家合法性叙事。其三,语言是中世纪西欧民族认同的直观标志。随着查理曼帝国一分为三,民族语言打破了中世纪西欧拉丁语“大一统”的格局。方言天然地具有排他性,通过与他者方言的区隔而自我确认,经过数百年演进为民族语言,基于语言形成了排他性的民族认同。历史发展进程表明,中世纪西欧民族认同具有三个历史性特质:否定性——拒斥帝国形态,生成性——生产自我系谱,排他性——区隔其他族群。民族认同历时性演进为民族主义,进而形成不同社会形态的民族国家。

Segmented evolution of Deyang-Anyue erosion rift trough in Sichuan Basin and its significance for oil and gas exploration, SW China

Based on analysis of field survey, drilling and seismic data, the formation and evolution process of Deyang-Anyue erosion rift trough in Sichuan Basin was reconstructed, and exploration areas were divided and evaluated. The results show that:(1) Dengying Formation in and around Deyang-Anyue erosion rift trough varies widely in sedimentary characteristics. The Dengying Formation in the northern part of the erosion rift trough developed deep-water sediments, the Dengying Formation in the northern part of the basin varied gradually from basin to slope, platform margin, and restricted platform, and the Dengying Formation in the middle and southern parts of the trough developed carbonate platform facies.(2) Deyang-Anyue erosion rift trough is formed by extensional rift and karst erosion jointly, the north section of the erosion rift trough is mainly the product of tensile rift, while the middle and south sections are formed by erosion in multi-episodes of Tongwan period.(3) Based on the segmented origins of the erosion rift trough, Dengying Formation in and around it is divided into three exploration fields: lithologic mound and beach bodies at the northern platform margin of the basin, karst mound and beach bodies in the central platform, and karst residual mounds in the central southern trough of the basin, among them, the karst residual mounds in the central southern trough of the basin are a new frontier for natural gas exploration in the basin, and the lithologic mound and beach bodies at the northern platform margin are a new position for increasing the reserves of trillions of cubic meters of natural gas resources in the basin.
