Electricity generation and brewery wastewater treatment from sequential anode-cathode microbial fuel cell

A sequential anode-cathode double-chamber microbial fuel cell （MFC）, in which the effluent of anode chamber was used as a continuous feed for an aerated cathode chamber, was constructed in this experiment to investigate the performance of brewery wastewater treatment in conjugation with electricity generation. Carbon fiber was used as anode and plain carbon felt with biofilm as cathode. When hydraulic retention time （HRT） was 14.7 h, a relatively high chemical oxygen demand （COD） removal efficiency of 91.7%-95.7% was achieved under long-term stable operation. The MFC displayed an open circuit voltage of 0.434 V and a maximum power density of 830 mW/m^3 at an external resistance of 300 0. To estimate the electrochemical performance of the MFC, electrochemical measurements were carried out and showed that polarization resistance of anode was the major limiting factor in the MFC. since a high COD removal efficiency was achieved, we conclude that the sequential anode-cathode MFC constructed with bio-cathode in this experiment could provide a new approach for brewery wastewater treatment.

BACKGROUND: For emergency department(ED) patients, risk assessment, prophylaxis, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of venous thromboembolism(VTE) are essential for preventing morbidity and mortality. This study aimes to investigate knowledge amongst emergency medical staff in the management of VTE. METHODS: We designed a questionnaire based on multiple scales. The questionnaire was distributed to the medical and nursing clinical staff in the large urban ED of a medical center in Northern China. Data was described with percentages and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare ranked data between different groups. The statistical analysis was done using the SPSS 22.0 ***: In this survey, 180 questionnaires were distributed and 174 valid responses(response rate of 96.67%) were collected and analyzed. In scores of VTE knowledge, no signifi cant differences were found with respect to job(doctor vs. nurse), the number of years working in clinical medicine, education level, and current position, previous hospital experience and nurses' current work location within the ED. However, in pair wise comparison, we found participants who worked in ED for more than 5 years(n=83) scored signifi cantly higher on the questionnaire than those under 5 years(n=91)(95.75 vs. 79.97, P=0.039). There was a signifi cant difference in some questions based on gender, age, job, and nurse work location, number of working years, education level, and different ED working ***: Our survey has shown defi ciencies among ED medical staff in knowledge and awareness of the management of VTE. We recommend several changes be considered, such as the introduction of an interdisciplinary workshop for medical staff; the introduction of a standardized VTE protocol; a mandatory study module on VTE for new physicians and nurses; the introduction of a mandatory reporting system for adverse events(including VTE).

The Salt Attack Performance of Magnesium Oxychloride Cement Exposure to Three Kinds of Brines

Salt attack performance of magnesium oxychloride cement(MOC) in brine was investigated from the viewpoints of strength development and strength coefficient. Microstructure was studied using quantitative X-ray diffraction(QXRD), thermogravimetry(TG) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The results show that MOC mortars have outstanding salt attack performance after aging brine and raw brine immersion. The salt attack coefficients of MOC mortars are higher than 0.8, which is qualified for application in saline soil and salt lake area. The reason is that salt brine solution enters into the voids of MOC and plays a role of toughening and strengthening in the MOC.

Adipogenesis is the healthy expansion of white adipose tissue (WAT),serving as a compensatory response to maintain metabolic homeostasis in the presence of excess energy in the ***,the identification of novel regulatory molecules in adipogenesis,specifically membrane receptors such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs),holds significant clinical *** receptors can serve as viable targets for pharmaceuticals,offering potential for restoring metabolic homeostasis in individuals with *** utilized trajectory inference methods to analyze three distinct single-nucleus sequencing (sNuc-seq) datasets of adipose tissue and systematically identified GPCRs with the potential to regulate *** verification in primary adipose progenitor cells (APCs) of mice,we discovered that ADGRD1 promoted the differentiation of APCs,while GPR39 inhibits this *** the obese mouse model induced by a high-fat diet(HFD),both gain-of-function and loss-of-function studies validated that ADGRD1 promoted adipogenesis,thereby improving metabolic homeostasis,while GPR39 inhibited adipogenesis,leading to metabolic ***,through the analysis of 2,400 ChIP-seq data and 1,204 bulk RNA-seq data,we found that the transcription factors (TFs) MEF2D and TCF12 regulated the expression of ADGRD1and GPR39,*** study revealed the regulatory role of GPCRs in adipogenesis,providing novel targets for clinical intervention of metabolic dysfunction in obese patients.

In recent years, due to the rapid development of high-performance small molecule acceptor (SMA) materials, the researches on p-type electron donor materials for matching with current efficient SMAs have become important. By means of asymmetric strategies to optimize the energy levels and inter/intramolecular interactions of molecules, we designed and synthesized an asymmetric aromatic side chain quinoxaline-based polymer donor TPQ-0F. Meanwhile, we took advantage of F atom which could form noncovalent interaction and strong electron-withdrawing property, to obtain the optimized quinoxaline-based polymer donors TPQ-1F, TPQ-1Fi and TPQ-2F. Eventually, the binary device based on TPQ-2F achieved an efficient power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.27%, which attributed to balanced hole/electron mobilities, less charge carrier recombination, and more favorable aggregation morphology. Our work demonstrates the great potential of asymmetric aromatic side chain quinoxaline-based polymer donors on optimizing the morphology of blending films, improving inter/intramolecular interactions, and subtly tuning energy level, finally for more efficient organic solar cells.

We study and characterise the breather-induced quantised superfluid vortex filaments which correspond to the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and super-regular breather excitations developing from localised *** vortex filaments,emerging from an otherwise perturbed helical vortex,exhibit intriguing loop structures corresponding to the large amplitude of breathers due to the dual action of bending and twisting of the *** loop induced by the Kuznetsov-Ma breather emerges periodically as time increases,while the loop structure triggered by the superregular breather—the loop pair—exhibits striking symmetry breaking due to the broken reflection symmetry of the group velocities of the super-regular *** particular,we identify explicitly the generation conditions of these loop excitations by introducing a physical quantity—the integral of the relative quadratic curvature—which corresponds to the effective energy of *** the nature of nonlinearity,it is demonstrated that this physical quantity shows a linear correlation with the loop *** results will deepen our understanding of breather-induced vortex filaments and be helpful for controllable ring-like excitations on the vortices.

silica-coated carbonyl iron particles （CIPs） are fabricated with the Stober method to improve their heat-resistance and wave-aSsorption properties. The morphology, heat-resistance, electromagnetic properties and microwave absorption of raw-CIPs and silica-coated CIPs are investigated using a scanning electron microscope, an energy dispersive spectrometer, a thermal-gravimetric analyzer, and a network analyzer. The results show that the heat-resistance of silica-coated CIPs is better than that of raw CIFs. The reflection losses exceeding -lOdB of silica-coated CIPs are obtained in the frequency range 9.5-12.4 GHz for the absorber thickness of 2.3 mm, and the same reflection losses of uncoated CIPs reach the data in the lower frequency range for the same thickness. The enhanced microwave absorption of silica-coated CIPs can be ascribed to the combination of proper electromagnetic impedance match and the decrease of dielectric permittivity.

The eigen-frequencies of the axial w-modes of neutron star described by a super-soft equation of state(EOS) are investigated,by considering the non-Newtonian *** results show that at the same stellar mass,the frequencies of wI and wI2 for our model are lower than that of the typical EOSs(such as APR); and the frequencies increase with the stellar masses,which is contrary to that of the typical *** characters may provide a probe to testify the super soft symmetry energy and the non-Newtonian gravity in the ***,our model also has the universal behavior of the mass-scaled eigen-frequencies as a function of the compactness.
