Surface energy-driven solution epitaxial growth of anatase TiO_(2) homostructures for overall water splitting

Titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))has been extensively investigated as a photocatalyst for water splitting to produce ***,an overall water splitting by using anatase TiO_(2) is extremely difficult due to the short lifetime of *** this work,we propose that a surface energy decrease from{001}to{101}of anatase TiO_(2) is able to drive an epitaxial growth.A novel anatase TiO_(2) homostructure has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route,where{101}semi-pyramid nanoparticles epitaxially grew on the both sides of the{001}*** epitaxial relationship between the nanoparticles and the nanosheets has been characterized to be{001}//{001}of anatase TiO_(2).For the first time,it is interesting to find that the homostructure with 12 wt%of{101}semi-pyramid can significantly improve the H2 evolution rate by nearly 5 times compared to the pure nanosheets under the ultraviolet *** importantly,such homostructure enables 10.78μmol g-1h-1 of O_(2) production whereas the pure nanosheets cannot evolve detectable O_(2) ***,the time-resolved photoluminescence analysis indicates that the mean lifetime of the holes is increased from 2.20 ns of the nanosheets to 3.59 ns of the homostructure,accounting for the observed overall water *** findings suggest that constructing a homostructure by a surface energy strategy could be promising towards overall water splitting,which may be applicable to other photocatalytic materials.

Freeze-drying synthesis of O,N-CeF_(3) with enhanced photocatalytic oxygen evolution

Drying methods have been verified to have a considerable impact on photocatalytic efficiency via altering surface *** this study,the preparations of O,N-CeF_(3) under identical conditions using the vacuum freezing method and the oven method are *** hydroxyl,as opposed to adsorbed oxygen in CeF_(3)-O,is the main component of O faults on the surface of CeF_(3)-*** particle size and the doping atom defects of CeF_(3)-V allow for more efficient separation and faster migration of photogenerated charge ***_(3)-V has an oxygen evolution rate of up to 1.4138 mmol/(g·h)and an apparent quantum yield of 90.90%at 550 *** tails are produced as a result of the doping O and N changing the intrinsic band ***_(3)-V shows a secondary conduction band potential that is sufficient for satisfying the minimal water oxidation potential *** elucidate that defects in the states of doping O and N significantly influence CeF_(3) energy *** on how the drying process affects the band structure and encourages carriers'separation via defects is valuable,which affects how well the photocatalysis works.

Harnessing overlapped temperature-salinity gradient in solar-driven interfacial seawater evaporation for efficient steam and electricity generation

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation(SIWE)offers a superb way to leverage concentrated solar heat to minimize energy dissipation during seawater *** also engenders overlapped temperaturesalinity gradient(TSG)between water-air interface and adjacent seawater,affording opportunities of harnessing ***,the efficiency of conventional SIWE technologies is limited by significant challenges,including salt passivation to hinder evaporation and difficulties in exploiting overlapped TSG ***,we report self-sustaining hybrid SIWE for not only sustainable seawater desalination but also efficient electricity generation from *** enables spontaneous circulation of salt flux upon seawater evaporation,inducing a self-cleaning evaporative interface without salt passivation for stable steam ***,this design enables spatial separation and simultaneous utilization of overlapped TSG to enhance electricity *** benefits render a remarkable efficiency of90.8%in solar energy utilization,manifesting in co-generation of solar steam at a fast rate of 2.01 kg m^(-2)-h^(-1)and electricity power of 1.91 W m^(-2)with high *** interfacing the hybrid SIWE with seawater electrolyzer constructs a system for water-electricity-hydrogen co-generation without external electricity *** produces hydrogen at a rapid rate of 1.29 L h^(-1)m^(-2)and freshwater with 22 times lower Na+concentration than the World Health Organization(WHO)threshold.

Rational design and exploration of low-cost and robust bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts are vitally important for developing high-performance zinc-air batteries(ZABs).Herein,we reported a facile yet cost-efficient approach to construct a bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction(OER)electrocatalyst composed of N-doped porous carbon nanosheet flowers decorated with Fe Co nanoparticles(Fe Co/N-CF).Rational design of this catalyst is achieved by designing Schiff-base polymer with unique molecular structure via hydrogen bonding of cyanuramide and terephthalaldehyde polycondensate in the presence of metal *** exhibits excellent activity and stability for electrocatalysis of ORR/OER,enabling ZAB with a high peak power density of 172 m W cm^(-2)and a large specific capacity of 811 m A h g^(-1)Znat large *** rechargeable ZAB demonstrates excellent durability for 1000 h with slight voltage decay,far outperforming a couple of precious Pt/Ir-based *** functional theory(DFT)calculations reveal that high activity of bimetallic Fe Co stems from enhanced O_(2)and OH-adsorption and accelerated O_(2)dissociation by OAO bond activation.

Effects of trace ytterbium addition on microstructure,mechanical and thermal properties of hypoeutectic Al-5Ni alloy

Over the past decade,the cast aluminum alloys with excellent mechanical and conductivity properties have emerged as potential materials for thermal ***,the traditional Al-Si based alloys are difficult to make significant breakthrough in conductivity *** hypoeutectic Al-5Ni alloy also possesses sound castability and is expected to be applied in thermal management *** this study,the effects of ytterbium(Yb element) at 0-0.5 wt% on the microstructures as well as the electrical/thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the Al-5Ni alloy were systematically *** experimental results indicate that the addition of Yb at a relatively low amount not only reduces the secondary dendrite arm spacing of the α-Al grains,but also modifies the morphology and distribution of eutectic boundary ***,it is found that the dosage of Yb at 0.3 wt% in the Al-5Ni alloy can simultaneously improve the yield strength,ultimate tensile strength and electrical/thermal *** strengthening and toughening of the Al-5Ni alloy are mainly attributed to the decrease of secondary dendrite arm spacing and the improvement of eutectic *** transmission electron microscopy/selected area electron diffraction(TEM/SAED) analysis indicates that the ytterbium in Al-5Ni alloy will form Al_(3)Yb phase,which mainly agglomerates in the Al_(3)Ni phase *** phase is helpful to decrease the solubility of impurity elements(e.g.,Fe and Si) in the α-Al matrix,which is beneficial to electrical/thermal *** value of this study lays foundation for manufacturing Al-Ni alloys with high thermal conductivity and acceptable mechanical properties.

Increased substitution rate in H5N1 avian influenza viruses during mass vaccination of poultry

As a means of heated debate,mass vaccination of poultry has been used in some countries to control H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza(HPAI),which remains of global economic and public health ***,mass vaccination can act as an evolutionary selective force facilitating the emergence of vaccine-resistant viruses,similar to that widespread use of antibiotics facilitates the emergence of antibiotic-resistant *** support the hypothesis,the substitution rates in the two subunits,HA1 and HA2,of the viral hemagglutinin gene,were calculated using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) *** was found that the rate in the HA1 subunit,but not in the HA2 subunit,increased significantly during periods of mass vaccination(2005 2010 in China and 2003 2009 in Indonesia),in contrast to the periods when no mass vaccination programs took place(1996 2004 in China and 2004 2008 in Thailand).Because substitutions in the HA1 subunit rather than in the HA2 subunit can lead to vaccine-resistant viruses,the results support that mass vaccination programs facilitate the emergence of vaccine-resistant viruses,which,in turn,will render mass vaccination programs less ***,caution must be taken when adopting mass vaccination as a long-term strategy to control HPAI.

With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in the past decades,stationary energy storage technologies are critically desired for storing electricity generated by non-dispatchable energy sources to mitigate its impact on power *** flow batteries(RFBs)stand out among these technologies due to their salient features for large-scale energy *** primary obstacle to the successful industrialization and broad deployment of RFBs is now their high capital costs.A feasible route to cost reduction is to develop high-power RFBs,since the increase in power performance has a pronounced impact on the cost of RFB *** this review,an in-depth inspection of the power performance of RFBs is *** for the future development of high-power RFBs along with implementable strategies addressing both the intrinsic and extrinsic limiting factors are summarized,which are expected to provide useful references steering the further improvement in the power density of RFBs.

Single-atom Pt promoted Mo_(2)C for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction

Hydrogen generation from electrochemical water splitting powered by renewable energy is important to the sustainable society,but the prohibitive cost of current Pt electrocatalyst has impeded the large-scale production of hydrogen by water *** this contribution,a new low-Pt electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) has been fabricated by a facile one-pot synthesis approach,in which Pt^(2+)cations and phosphomolybdic acid confined in the metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) were submitted to pyrolysis to yield Pt single atoms dispersed into Mo_(2)C nanocrystals in 3 D porous carbon *** as-synthesized Pt_(1)-Mo_(2)C-C catalyst with Pt content of only 0.7 wt% exhibited remarkably enhanced activity for HER in 1 M KOH,with overpotential at 10 mA/cm^(2) lowered from 211 mV to 155 mV and 7-fold higher mass activity(7.14 A/mgpt) than the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/*** promoted activity can be attributed to the electronic interaction between Pt single atoms and Mo2C surface,which not only improved water activation but also strengthened hydrogen adsorption,as indicated by FTIR and microcalorimetric characterizations.
