Although there are many reports of fossil Ephedraceae,whole plant fossil record remains *** to a lack of trust on partially preserved fossil materials,scholars working on molecular clock proposed a recent origin of Ephedra and cast doubt on the earlier origin time of *** better the understanding on this interesting group,here we report whole plants of Ephedra hongtaoi ***.(Ephedraceae,Gnetales) from the Yixian Formation (Early Cretaceous) in western Liaoning,*** whole plants of Ephedra demonstrate clearly the characters of Ephedra,including shrubby growth habit,decussate branching pattern,and terminal ovuliferous unit with micropylar *** whole-plant preservation of the fossils provides more convincing fossil evidence of Early Cretaceous Ephedra,helps to resolve the controversy over the origin time of Ephedra,and sheds light on the whole plant morphology,growth habit,ecology and evolution of Ephedraceae.

The early evolution of angiosperms has been a focus of intensive research for more than a century. The Yixian Formation in western Liaoning yields one of the earliest angiosperm macrofioras. Despite multitudes of angiosperm fossils uncovered, including Archaefructus and Sinocarpus, no bona fide normal flower has been dated to 12. Ma （mega-annum） or older. Here we report Callianthus dilae gen. et sp. nov. from the Yixian Formation （Early Cretaceous） in western Liaoning, china as the earliest normal flower known to date. The flower demonstrates a typical floral organization, including tepals, androecium, and gynoecium. The tepals are spatulate with parallel veins. The stamens have a slender filament, a globular anther, bristles at the anther apex, and in situ round-triangular pollen grains. The gynoecium is composed of two stylate carpels enclosed in a fleshy envelope, and develops into a ＂hip＂ when mature. Since the well-accepted history of angiosperms is not much longer than 12. Ma, Callianthus together with Chaoyangia, Archaefructus and Sinocarpus from the Yixian Formation demonstrate a surprisingly high diversity of angiosperms, implying a history of angiosperms much longer than currently accepted.

Searching for early angiosperms is a riveting activity in botany because it helps to resolve the phyiogenetic relationships among seed plants and among angiosperms themselves. One of the challenges for this job is what the target fossils look like. Most possibly early angiosperms may elude our scrutiny with gymnospermous appearances. This possibility becomes a reality in a Jurassic plant, Solaranthus gen. nov, which bears a peltaspermalean appearance and enclosed ovules. According to knowledge available hitherto, the latter feature makes it an angiosperm. However, such a feature is more likely to be eclipsed by its gymnospermous appearance. The early age and unexpected character assemblage of Solaranthus urge for a fresh look on the assumed-simple relationship between angiosperms and gymnosperms. Its resemblance to the order Peltaspermales favors the Mostly Male Theory.

The transition of the Jurassic to Cretaceous sequence in western Liaoning, northeastern china has become the focus for geologists and palaeontologists, especially due to the well-preserved Jehol Biota. In western Liaoning, the occurrence of early angiosperms and the "missing link" of fossil ginkgos in the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous provides great potential for exploring the macroevolution of plants. However, our knowledge for the biodiversity of late Mesozoic conifer plants in this region seems to be limited.

A recently discovered megafossil of whole plant cycad is briefly reported here. The specimen is collected from the Yangcaogou Formation (Upper Triassic) in Changheying, Beipiao, Liaoning. The whole plant is preserved intact on a sandstone slab, 89 cm long and 130 cm wide, including leaves up to 82.cm long and a male cone physically attached to the stem apex. Analysis on the morphology, arrangement and venation of leaf and pinna, male cone and its relationship with other parts indicates that the fossil is closely related to living Zamiaceae in Cycadales. This cycad fossil is hitherto most completely preserved cycad specimen including both vegetative and reproductive organs. Its discovery contributes much to our understanding of the morphology and evolution of cycads, palaeoclimate as well as palaeoenvironment.

The Cycadales are one of the most ancient lineages of seed plants, with afossil record that extends over 2.0 million years. Cycads are believed to have originated from theLate Palaeozoic, and reached its maximum diversity and distribution during the Mesozoic; however,their evolutionary history has remained relatively poorly understood. This largely results from thelack of anatomically well preserved fossil evidence and reproductive remains. In recent years, moreresearchers have carried out phylogenetic analysis using molecular approaches, and obtained excitingresults, which broaden our knowledge of plant evolution. Meanwhile, more and more researchers haverecognized that the fossil record is crucial for phylogenetic reconstruction of plant groups thathave extensive evolutionary histories. Therefore, any discoveries of anatomically informative fossilwith relation to cycadales or cycad-like plant taxa are of great importance to understanding oftheir evolutionary history.

The Paleo-Asian Ocean （Southern Mongolian Ocean） ophiolitic belts and massive granitoids are exposed in the Alxa block, in response to oceanic subduction processes. In this work, we report petrographic, geochem- ical, and zircon U-Pb age data of some granitoid intrusions from the northern Alxa. Zircon U-Pb dating for the quartz diorite, tonalite, monzogranite, and biotite granite yielded weighted mean 2.6pb/2.8U ages o f 302.±9.2.Ma, 2.6.5±54.6 Ma, 2.5±4.4 Ma, and 2.9.5±5.6 Ma, respectively. The quartz diorites （-302.Ma） exhibit geochemical similarities to adakites, likely derived from partial melting of the initially subducted Chaganchulu back-arc oceanic slab. The tonalites （-2.6.5 Ma） display geochemical affinities of I-type granites. They were probably derived by fractional crystallization of the modified lithospheric mantle-derived basaltic magmas in a volcanic arc setting. The monzo- granites （-2.5 Ma） are characterized by low A12.3, but high Y and Yb with notably negative Eu anomalies. In contrast, the biotite granites （-2.9.5 Ma） show high A12.3 but low Y and Yb with steep HREE patterns and the absence of negative Eu anomalies. Elemental data suggested that the biotite granites were likely derived from a thickened lower crust, but the monzogranites originated from a thin crust. Our data suggested that the initial subduction of the Chaganchulu oceanic slab towards the Alxa block occurred at - 302.Ma. This subduction process continued to the Early Triassic （-2.6 Ma） and the basin was finally closed before the Middle Triassic （-2.5 Ma）. Subsequently, the break-off of the subducted slab triggered asthenosphere upwelling （2.0-2.0 Ma）.

新疆北部准噶尔盆地周边石炭系广泛出露,其中上石炭统发育海相火山—沉积序列,包括西准噶尔地区的哈拉阿拉特组、阿腊德依克赛组,东准噶尔地区的石钱滩组以及盆地南部的祁家沟组、奥尔吐组等。本文研究在上述各地层的灰岩层或夹层、碎屑岩中获得的四射珊瑚9属17种和床板珊瑚2.3种,对石钱滩组中的3个新种进行了详细的系统古生物学描述。上述珊瑚化石的地质时代主要为巴什基尔期至莫斯科期。在珊瑚动物群的组成上,哈拉阿拉特组中新发现Caninophyllum属分子,结合盆地东、西部共同产出的床板珊瑚Cystodendropora属分子,说明整个准噶尔盆地周边的动物群面貌大致类似,而西准噶尔地区的化石丰度、分异度显著低于盆地东部和东南部。综合前人资料,目前在准噶尔盆地周边发现的珊瑚化石有约一半为地方性分子。本文认为研究区珊瑚化石的分布和组成特征与晚石炭世准噶尔洋走向封闭或半封闭的演化趋势密切相关。

Based on grain size analysis and high-resolution elemental scanning of core YD0901,taken from the subaqueous Yangtze River delta,a 600-year flood history was reconstructed for the Yangtze River drainage ***/Rb ratios were chosen as a proxy for Yangtze River *** resides mainly in the coarse-grained minerals,and Rb is found in the fine-grained *** floods occur,the discharge of the Yangtze River increases,which carries more coarse-grained minerals into the East china ***,deposition of coarse-grained minerals significantly increases relative to fine-grained minerals on the subaqueous delta,and subsequently the Zr/Rb ratios also *** higher the Zr/Rb peaks,the greater number of coarse particles deposited by saltation ***/Rb peaks correlate very well with historical records for Yangtze River *** at about AD 1870,the Zr/Rb ratio reached a maximum value over the last 600 years,which is consistent with "the extreme flood event" in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River in AD 1870,as indicated in the historical *** show that floods have occurred at a relatively high frequency over the last 600 years,which is consistent with historical records when,during the Ming-Qing Dynasty,floods occurred once every 4 *** addition,spectral analysis of the Zr/Rb ratio showed that there is close link between the Yangtze River floods and ENSO intensity.
