The selective pressure exerted by avian brood parasites forces their hosts to evolve specific defense *** subject to brood parasite attack,avian hosts will often emit alarm *** date,few studies have examined whether and how host responses to different alarm calls indicative of different enemies vary with the hosts breeding *** carried out alarm call playback experiments during both the egg and nestling stages of the oriental reed warbler Acrocephalus orientals,a host of the common cuckoo Cuculus *** playback exemplars were selected from recorded alarm calls of the warbler to the presenee of common cuckoos,sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus,and oriental turtle doves Streptopelia orientalis,which represented brood parasite,predator,and harmless control,*** results showed that the oriental reed warblers did not discriminate alarm calls issued to different intruder types,but the intensity of the response was significantly higher in the nestling stage than in the egg *** behavior related to sparrowhawk alarm calls was absent in the egg stage,but aggressive behavior in creased dramatically and exceeded the attack frequency in response to the cuckoo alarm call in the nestling stage,implying a shift in the tradeoff between the parents'own survival and the loss of *** calls attracted a larger nu mber of con specifics tha n members of other *** gen eral,the oriental reed warbler had consistently stronger responses to different alarm calls in the nestling stage than in the egg stage,supporting the offspring value hypothesis.

To investigate the seismic behavior of I-section columns made of 460 MPa high strength steel （HSS）, six specimens were tested under constant axial load and cyclic horizontal load. The specimens were designed with different width-to-thickness ratios and loaded under different axial load ratios. For each specimen, the failure mode was observed and hysteretic curve was measured. Comparison of different specimens on hysteretic characteristic, energy dissipation capacity and deformation capacity were further investigated. Test results showed that the degradation of bearing capacity was due to local buckling of flange and web. Under the same axial load ratio, as width-to-thickness ratio increased, the deformation area of local buckling became smaller. And also, displacement level at both peak load and failure load became smaller. In addition, the full extent of hysteretic curve, energy dissipation capacity, ultimate story drift angle decreased, and capacity degradation occurred more rapidly with the increase of width-to-thickness ratio or axial load ratio. Based on the capacity of story drift angle, limiting values which shall not be exceeded are suggested respectively for flange and web plate of 460 MPa HSS I-section columns when used in SMFs and in IMFs in the case of axial load ratio no more than 0.2. Such values should be smaller when the axial load ratio increases.

The mutually antagonistic processes producing adaptations and counter-adaptations in avian brood parasites and their hosts provide a model system for the study of coevolution;this topic has long been an area of focus in ornithology and evolutionary *** there is an extensive body of literature dealing with avian brood parasitism,few empirical studies have considered the effects of the coevolutionary processes associated with brood parasitism on the acoustic characteristics of parent–offspring *** the strong selection pressures associated with brood parasitism,parasitic birds may,for instance,produce deceptive *** host may in turn evolve the ability to recognize these sounds as *** present,the mechanisms underlying the different competitive strategies employed by hosts and parasitic birds remain ***,we reviewed previous studies that investigated acoustic traits in scenarios of brood parasitism,highlighting possible adaptive *** a meta-analysis,we identified no heterogeneity among studies of begging call adaptations in parasitic ***,our results may have been affected by the small number of applicable papers available for *** meta-analysis also suggested that studies of acoustic communication and transmission in adult hosts were highly heterogenous,suggesting that research methods were inconsistent among ***,we identified knowledge gaps and proposed several lines of future research.

Biogas residue （BR） is widely used as a new green fertilizer in agriculture in China. However, it often contains a high concentration of heavy metals so its application should cause our concern. An incubation experiment was conducted to study the risk of pig biogas residue （PBR） and chicken biogas residue （CBR） application on Liuminying soil （LS） and Yixing soil （YS）. The soils were incubated for one, three and six months with 0, 2%, 4% and 6% addition of BRs. According to BCR extraction results, the PBR and CBR applications induced an increase in the concentration of exchangeable fraction of Zn. As for the concentration of exchangeable fraction of Cu, an increase was only observed in the treatments with PBR application. The heavy metal binding intensity also showed a similar trend. With the PBR application, for the LS and YS, the highest concentrations of exchangeable Zn increased 3.6 and 9.5 times, respectively, while the exchangeable Cu was increased by 52.6% and 187.1%. Dissolved organic carbon was the limiting factor for the exchangeable Cu while the exchangeable Zn was controlled by soil pH. PBR presented more agricultural risk than CBR when used as fertilizer. Meanwhile, BRs were more adaptable to LS than YS according to the heavy metal release results.

Use of 3D-printed animal models as a standard method to test avian behavioral responses toward nest intruders in the studies of avian brood parasitism

Living and/or non-living animal models are often used as stimuli to observe the behavioral responses of the target *** the past,parasites,predators,and harmless controls have been used to test host anti-parasitism defense behavior,and their taxidermy specimens have been widely used as a set of standard methods for the study of avian brood *** recent years,with the rapid development of 3D-printing technology,3D-printed bird models are expected to be applied as a standard method in the study of avian brood *** evaluate the use of 3D-printed models,this study tests the reaction of Oriental Reed Warbler(Acrocephalus orientalis)towards predators,parasites,or controls,and compares the reaction among different nest intruders and between taxidermy specimens and 3D-printed animal *** was found that the Oriental Reed Warbler responded most aggressively to the parasite,followed by predator,and finally the control;the results were consistent between the reaction to taxidermy specimens and 3D-printed animal models,indicating that 3D-printed models could serve as a substitute for taxidermy *** propose a series of advantages of using 3D-printed models and suggest them to be a standard method for widespread use in future studies of avian brood parasitism.

The bandwidth of internet connections is still a bottleneck when transmitting large amounts of images,making the image quality assessment *** assessment of image quality has highlight advantages for it does not interfere with natural viewing ***,in JPEG compression,the previous study is hard to tell the difference between the electroencephalogram(EEG)evoked by different quality *** this paper,we propose an EEG analysis approach based on algebraic topology analysis,and the result shows that the difference between Euler characteristics of EEG evoked by different distortion images is striking both in the alpha and beta ***,we further discuss the relationship between the images and the EEG signals,and the results implied that the algebraic topological properties of images are consistent with that of brain perception,which is possible to give birth to braininspired image compression based on algebraic topological *** general,an algebraic topologybased approach was proposed in this paper to analyze the perceptual characteristics of image quality,which will be beneficial to provide a reliable score for data compression in the network and improve the network transmission capacity.

Chemical Fingerprint for Identification and Quality Control of Saccharides in Danhong Injection Based on HPLC-ELSD with Chemometrics

Chemical fingerprinting has been widely used for the quality control of complex natural products including traditional Chinese medicines and botanical drugs. However, there is still lack of appropriate method to monitor the batch-to-batch consistency of hydrophilic constituents, such as saccharides and oligosaccharides. In the present study, we developed a novel approach based on high performance liquid chromatography with evaporative light scattering detector(HPLC-ELSD) for establishing saccharide fingerprinting of Danhong Injection(DHI), which is a widely used botanical drug for treating cardiovascular diseases. Major saccharides in DHI were isolated and four compounds including fructose, glucose and two oligosaccharides were identified. The structures of two novel saccharides named glycerol-1-O-galactfpyranosyl-(1→4)-O-arabmofuranoside, and glycerol-1-O-galactpyranosyl-(1→4)[O-arabmfuranosyl-(1→3)]-O-arabinofuranoside were confirmed by NMR, HR-ESI-MS and GC-MS for the first time. The establishment approach was successfully applied to distinguishing 12 batches of DHI from other botanical drugs with the aid of principle component analysis as well as to evaluating batch-to-batch consistency with the help of calculating similarity of tmgerprints. Our findings indicate that the chemical fingerprint of saccharides can be a useful tool for the quality control of complex natural products.

Formins are well-known regulators that participate in the organization of the actin cytoskeleton in organisms. The Arabidopsis thaliana L. genome encodes 21 formins, which can be divided into two distinct subfamilies. However, type II formins have to date been less well characterized. Here, we cloned a type II formin, AtFH16, and characterized its biochemical activities on actin and microtubule dynamics. The results show that the FH1 FH2 structure of AtFH16 cannot nucleate actin polymerization efficiently, but can bind and bundle microfilaments. AtFH16 FHIFH2 is also able to bind and bundle microtubules, and preferentially binds microtubules over microfilaments in vitro, in addition, AtFH16 FHIFH2 co-localizes with microtubules in onion epidermal cells, indicating a higher binding affinity of AtFH16 FHIFH2 for microtubules rather than microfilaments in vivo. In conclusion, AtFH16 is able to interact with both microfilaments and microtubules, suggesting that AtFH16 probably functions as a bifunctional protein, and may thus participate in plant cellular processes.

Background: Birdsong is an important form of communication that plays an important role in territorial defense and mate attraction by conveying valuable information. While body-size and song frequency are often negatively correlated among species, this relationship is only found in a few songbirds. Previous studies on the Dusky Warbler (Phylloscopus fuscatus) found that there was a positive correlation between tarsus length and peak frequency. And heavier male Dusky Warblers possess better territories and obtain more opportunities for mating;body condition may be related to reproduction of birds, so females may choose heavier mates or better body condition based on the singing characteristics of males. Methods: We recorded spontaneous song and measured morphology of 33 male Dusky Warblers in Saihanba Forest Farm area between July 5 and August 10, 2015. We chose body weight as an indicator of body size and defined body condition as residuals from a linear regression between body weight and tarsus length. Frist, we used Pearson correlation to analyze whether date and time of day were correlated with weight, and then we used linear regression to analyze whether sound features could indicate the body weight and body condition. We call body weight and body condition the male condition. Results: We found no effect of date and time of day on weight, and we showed a correlation between the male condition and song features in the small songbird, Dusky Warbler. Maximum trill quality and maximum peak frequency of songs were negatively related to male condition;the mean number of syllables of songs and maximum high frequency of songs were positively correlated with body weight and body condition. Conclusions: In the small songbird, Dusky Warbler, four song parameters, including maximum trill quality, mean number of syllables of songs, maximum peak frequency of songs, maximum high frequency of songs, significantly predicted male condition change of which the most important song
