Soil salinization may negatively affect microbial processes related to carbon dioxide （CO2） and nitrous oxide （N20） emissions. A short-term laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of soil electrical conductivity （EC） and moisture content on CO2 and N20 emissions from sulfate-based natural saline soils. Three separate 100-m long transects were established along the salinity gradient on a salt-affected agricultural field at Mooreton, North Dakota, USA. Surface soils were collected from four equally spaced sampling positions within each transect, at the depths of 0-15 and 15-30 cm. In the laboratory, artificial soil cores were formed combining soils from both the depths in each transect, and incubated at 60% and 90% water-filled pore space （wFPS） at 25 ~C. The measured depth-weighted EC of the saturated paste extract （ECe） across the sampling positions ranged from 0.43 to 4.65 dS m-1. Potential nitrogen （N） mineralization rate and CO2 emissions decreased with increasing soil ECe, but the relative decline in soil CO2 emissions with increasing ECe was smaller at 60% wFPS than at 90% wFPS. At 60% wFPS, soil N20 emissions decreased from 133 g N20-N kg-1 soil at ECe （ 0.50 dS m-1 to 72 μg N20-N kg-1 soil at ECe = 4.65 dS m-1. In contrast, at 90% wFPS, soil N20 emissions increased from 262 g N20-N kg-1 soil at ECe ： 0.81 dS m-1 to 849 g N20-N kg-1 soil at ECe ： 4.65 dS m-1, suggesting that N20 emissions were linked to both soil ECe and moisture content. Therefore, spatial variability in soil ECe and pattern of rainfall over the season need to be considered when up-scaling N20 and CO2 emissions from field to landscape scales.

Pathology is an inherently subjective discipline, and therefore is often referred to as both an art and a science. Over the years, laboratory physicians have implemented special tissue stains and molecular techniques to limit subjectivity in the discipline. Beginning in the late 19th century, histochemical stains were developed to assess diagnostic biochemical reactions in tissue. Histochemistry has recently seen a resurgence in popularity because of the higher costs of other newer methods. Today, this technique is used by almost every pathology laboratory across the world. This book comprehensively covers all diseases for which that technique plays a central role in diagnosis. Every anatomic region is covered in detail with examples of appropriate staining techniques, and the book is heavily illustrated with over 850 color photomicrographs. This is the first monograph to be published on histochemistry in 15 years, and it is the only one that is diagnostically-oriented.

Nanoparticle (NP) colloidal stability plays a crucial role in biomedical application not only for human and environmental safety but also for NP efficiency and functionality. NP agglomeration is considered as a possible process in monodispersed NP colloidal solutions, which drastically affects colloidal stability. This process is triggered by changes in the physicochemical properties of the surrounding media, such as ionic strength (IS), pH value, or presence of biomolecules. Despite different available characterization methods for nanoparticles (NPs), there is a lack of information about the underlying mechanisms at the early stage of dynamic behaviors, namely changing in NP size distribution and structure while placing them from a stable colloidal solution to a new media like biological fluids. In this study, an advanced in situ approach is presented that combines small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and microfluidics, allowing label-free, direct, time-resolved, and dynamic observations of the early stage of NP interaction/agglomeration initiated by environmental changes. It is shown for silica NPs that the presence of protein in the media enormously accelerates the NP agglomeration process compared to respective changes in IS and pH. High IS results in a staring agglomeration process after 40 min, though, in case of protein presence in media, this time decreased enormously to 48 s. These time scales show that this method is sensitive and precise in depicting the dynamics of fast and slow NP interactions in colloidal conditions and therefore supports understanding the colloidal stability of NPs in various media concluding in safe and efficient NP designing for various applications.

碳酸盐岩孔洞连通成串、成群可以有效提高改造体积,但受到高应力差、非均质性和孔洞随机分布等影响,孔洞连通性通常较差。针对碳酸盐岩酸压孔洞连通成串的工程问题,考虑酸压过程中酸液对于岩石的动态影响,引入描述酸岩反应的相场参数,提出一种基于相场法的酸压裂缝扩展模拟方法,对碳酸盐岩储层酸压孔洞连通成串现象进行模拟。对比了酸压与滑溜水压裂的裂缝扩展特征,分析了不同孔洞大小与分布情况下孔洞结构对酸压裂缝扩展的影响。根据模拟分析结果可知:(1)与普通水力裂缝相比,酸压裂缝扩展时缝宽增大,缝长降低,裂缝扩展速度降低;同时裂缝表面岩石被酸液腐蚀,裂缝表面粗糙程度明显上升;(2)孔洞结构会诱导酸压裂缝扩展,裂缝在酸化区域扩展时,靠近孔洞处的扩展速度更高;(3)缝洞型储层酸压过程中,孔洞半径越大,距离裂缝原扩展路径越近,裂缝越易发生转向,且越容易沟通多个孔洞,多孔洞连通成串可以有效提高泄流面积。

Over the past fi ve years, tropical activity in the East Pacifi c has increased, while declining in the Atlantic Basin. In addition, during El Ni?o years, warmer than average sea surface temperatures further increase the likelihood of tropical cyclone formation in the East Pacifi c. Hurricane fi eld campaigns used the Ku-/Ka-band HighAltitude wind and Rain Airborne Profi ler(HIwRAP) radar on the Global Hawk(GH) unmanned aircraft, in GRIP(Genesis and Rapid Intensifi cation Processes 2010), HS3(Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel 2012-14), and the NOAA Sensing Hazards with Operational Unmanned Technology(SHOUT 2015-16) fi eld campaigns. Although originally designed for the GH, the X-band high-altitude RADar(EXRAD) has yet to be integrated and fl own on an unmanned aerial vehicle. EXRAD will provide data with less attenuation of signal over deep convection as well as better estimates of three-dimensional winds with its nadir-pointing beam. As part of the NASA Hand On Project Experience(HOPE) Training Opportunity, our team proposed to fl y the AV-6 GH aircraft with the EXRAD radar, the High Altitude MMIC Sounding Radiometer(HAMSR), and NOAA Advanced Vertical Atmospheric Profi ling System(AVAPS) dropsondes to investigate genesis and/or rapid intensifi cation(RI) of an East Pacifi c hurricane by measuring both the environment and interior structures. Information on planned activities primarily focused on the EXRAD high-altitude radar integration for the July-August 2017 science fl ight will be presented.
