we present a new solution for the elastic displacement and strain fields on or near Earth’s surface due to rectangular faults in an anisotropic half-space,expressed as a summation of(A)the solution in an infinite space which is singular,and(B)the complementary part which is regular and *** two solutions are expressed in terms of the mathematically elegant and computationally powerful Stroh formalism and can be applied to the generally anisotropic rock half-space or a transversely isotropic rock mass with any oriented plane of *** any flat fault of polygonal shape,one needs only to carry out a simple line integral from 0 to 7 r in order to express the fault-induced *** examples are presented to demonstrate the significant effect of the rock anisotropy and layer orientation on the fault-induced displacement and strain fields in anisotropic *** applications are wide ranging,from faults in sedimentary strata to strongly deformed metamorphic rocks with steeply dipping foliation.

Spatial-temporal modeling of initial COVID-19 diffusion: The cases of the Chinese Mainland and Conterminous United States

COVID-19 outbreaks in China in late December 2019,then in the United States(US)in early *** the initial wave of diffusion,the virus respectively took 14 and 33 days to spread across the provinces/states in the Chinese mainland and the coterminous US,during which there are 43%and 70%zero entries in the space-time series for China and US respectively,indicating a zero-inflated count process.A logistic growth curve as a function of the number of days since the first case appeared in each of these countries accurately portrays the national aggregate per capita rates of infection for *** paper presents two space-time model specifications,one based upon the generalized linear mixed model,and the other upon Moran eigenvector space-time filtering,to describe the spread of COVID-19 in the initial 19 and 58 days across the Chinese mainland and the coterminous US,*** from these case studies show both models shed new light on the role of spatial structures in COVID-19 diffusion,models that can forecast new cases in subsequent days.A principal finding is that describing the spatiotemporal diffusion of COVID-19 benefits from including a hierarchical structural component to supplement the commonly employed contagion component.

On the Volume Conservation of the Immersed Boundary Method

The immersed boundary(IB)method is an approach to problems of fluid-structure interaction in which an elastic structure is immersed in a viscous incompressible *** IB formulation of such problems uses a Lagrangian description of the structure and an Eulerian description of the *** is well known that some versions of the IB method can suffer from poor volume *** have been introduced to improve the volume-conservation properties of the IB method,but they either have been fairly specialized,or have used complex,nonstandard Eulerian finite-difference *** this paper,we use quasi-static and dynamic benchmark problems to investigate the effect of the choice of Eulerian discretization on the volume-conservation properties of a formally second-order accurate IB *** consider both collocated and staggered-grid discretization *** the tests considered herein,the staggered-grid IB scheme generally yields at least a modest improvement in volume conservation when compared to cell-centered methods,and in many cases considered in this work,the spurious volume changes exhibited by the staggered-grid IB method are more than an order of magnitude smaller than those of the collocated *** also compare the performance of cell-centered schemes that use either exact or approximate projection *** find that the volumeconservation properties of approximate projection IB methods depend strongly on the formulation of the projection *** used with the IB method,we find that pressure-free approximate projection methods can yield extremely poor volume conservation,whereas pressure-increment approximate projection methods yield volume conservation that is nearly identical to that of a cell-centered exact projection method.

Spatially simplified scatterplots for large raster datasets

Scatterplots are essential tools for data exploration. however, this tool poorly scales with data-size, with overplotting and excessive delay being the main problems. Generalization methods in the attribute domain focus on visual manipulations, but do not take into account the inherent nature of information redundancy in most geographic data. These methods may also result in alterations of statistical properties of data. Recent developments in spatial statistics, particularly the formulation of effective sample size and the fast approximation of the eigenvalues of a spatial weights matrix, make it possible to assess the information content of a georeferenced data-set, which can serve as the basis for resampling such data. Experiments with both simulated data and actual remotely sensed data show that an equivalent scatterplot consisting of point clouds and fitted lines can be produced from a small subset extracted from a parent georeferenced data-set through spatial resampling. The spatially simplified data subset also maintains key statistical properties as well as the geographic coverage of the original data.
