Impact on dietary intake of a self-directed, gender-tailored diabetes prevention program in men

AIM To investigate changes in dietary intake following a 6-mo randomised controlled trial of the self-directed, gendertailored type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) Prevention Using LifeS tyle Education(PULSE) program in men. METHODS Men aged 18-65 years, with a body mass index(BMI)25-40 kg/m^2, and at high risk for developing T2DM were recruited from the Hunter Region of New South wales,Australia. Eligible participants were randomised into one of two groups:(1) waitlist control; or(2) PULSE intervention. Dietary intake was assessed at baseline and immediately post-program using the Australian Eating Survey food frequency questionnaire and diet quality measured using the Australian Recommended Food Score(ARFS). RESULTS One hundred and one participants(n = 48, control; n= 53, intervention, mean age 52.3 ± 9.7 years, BMI of 32.6 ± 3.3 kg/m^2) commenced the study. Following the active phase, differences between groups were observed for proportion of total energy consumed from healthful(core) foods(+7.6%EI, P < 0.001), energydense, nutrient-poor foods(-7.6%EI, P < 0.001),sodium(-369 mg, P = 0.047), and diet quality(ARFS)(+4.3, P = 0.004), including sub-scales for fruit(+1.1, P= 0.03), meat(+0.9, P = 0.004) and non-meat protein(+0.5, P = 0.03). CONCLUSION The PULSE prevention program's nutrition messages led to significant improvements in dietary intake in men at risk of T2DM.

Effect of feeding broilers diets differing in susceptible phytate content

Measurements of total phytate phosphorus content of diets may be deceptive as they do not indicate substrate availability for phytase; it may be that measurements of phytate susceptible to phytase effects are a more accurate measure of phosphorus(P) availability to the bird. To verify this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted to compare diets formulated to contain either high or low susceptible phytate, supplemented with either 0 or 500 FTU/kg phytase. Susceptible phytate was determined by exposing the feed samples to conditions that mimicked the average pH of the proximal gastrointestinal tract(pH 4.5) and the optimum temperature for phytase activity(37℃) and then measuring phytate dissolved. Ross 308 birds(n = 240) were fed one of 4 dietary treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial design; 2 diets with high(8.54 g/kg, 57.90% of total phytate) or low(5.77 g/kg, 46.33% of total phytate) susceptible phytate, containing 0 or 500 FTU/kg phytase. Diets were fed to broilers(12 replicate pens of 5 birds per pen) from d 0 to 28 post hatch. Birds fed diets high in susceptible phytate had greater phytate hydrolysis in the gizzard(P jejunum(P weight gain(BwG)(P = 0.015) and lower FCR(P = 0.003) than birds fed the low susceptible phytate diets,irrespective of phytase presence. Birds fed the high susceptible diets also had greater P solubility in the gizzard and Ca and P solubility in the jejunum and ileum(P w susceptible diets. All the susceptible phytate was fully degraded in the tract in the absence of added phytase, suggesting the assay used in this study was able to successfully estimate the amount of total dietary phytate that was susceptible to the effects of phytase when used at standard levels. Effects of Plyometric and Explosive Speed Training on Recreational Marathoners

BACKGROUND: Plyometric training has been shown to improve performance in distance running events up to 5-km, but little research has been done on this type of training for marathon (42.195-km) runners. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of plyometric and explosive speed training (PLYO) on recreational marathoners. METHODS: Twenty-two subjects (ages 18-23), were randomized to either PLYO or core training (CORE) for a weekly session performed for 12 weeks, in addition to marathon training. Sprint, jump, and distance running performance variables were measured pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS: In the sprint tests, the PLYO group improved in both the 200-m run (P ≤ 0.001) and 60-m run (P = 0.004), and trended toward improvement in the 30-m fly (P = 0.051). The difference from CORE was significant only in the 200-m (P = 0.002). The CORE group did not change in any of the sprint or jump variables. The PLYO group was significantly different from the CORE group in the standing long jump (P = 0.024). There were no differences between groups in distance running performance. Both improved in 2-mile (3.219-km) time trial (p ≤ 0.001), VO2MAX (P = 0.026 for CORE; P = 0.002 for PLYO), and running economy (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: weekly PLYO training improves sprint speed and maintains jumping ability in recreational marathoners, but does not augment improvements in distance running performance.
