The energy per particle BA in nuclear matter is calculated up to high baryon density in the whole isospin asymmetry range from symmetric matter to pure neutron *** results,obtained in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation with two-and three-body forces,confirm the well-known parabolic dependence on the asymmetry parameterβ=(N?Z)/A(β^2 law)that is valid in a wide density *** investigate the extent to which this behavior can be traced back to the properties of the underlying interaction,aside from the mean field approximation,the spin-isospin decomposition of BA is *** indications suggest that theβ^2 law could be violated at higher densities as a consequence of the three-body *** raises the problem that the symmetry energy,calculated according to theβ^2 law as a difference between BA in pure neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter,cannot be applied to neutron *** should return to the proper definition of the nuclear symmetry energy as a response of the nuclear system to small isospin imbalance from the Z=N nuclei and pure neutron matter.

AIm:To evaluate the main factors associated with mortality in patients undergoing surgery for perforated peptic ulcer referred to an academic department of general surgery in a large southern Italian city. mETHODS:One hundred and forty-nine consecutive patients (m:F ratio=110:39,mean age 52 yrs,range 16-95) with peptic ulcer disease were investigated for clinical history (including age,sex,previous history of peptic ulcer,associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,ulcer site,operation type,shock on admission,postoperative general complications, and intra-abdominal and/or wound infections),serum analyses and radiological findings. RESULTS:The overall mortality rate was 4.0%.Among all factors,an age above 65 years,one or more associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,shock on admission, postoperative abdominal complications and/or wound infections,were significantly associated (x^2) with increased mortality in patients undergoing surgery (0.0001mitant diseases,shock on admission,delayed surgery,and postoperative abdominal and wound infections are significantly associated with fatal outcomes and need careful evaluation within the general workup of patients admitted for perforated peptic ulcer.

During the last decade we have witnessed an unprec-edented outburst of new treatment approaches for the management of metastatic colon ***-angio-genic drugs,epidermal growth factor receptor blockers and multi-kinase inhibitors have all resulted in small but consistent improvement in clinical ***,this progress has paradoxically leaded us into new *** many cases the clinical development was done in parallel and the lack of head-to-head compari-son evolved into circumstances where several valid new"standards of care"are *** though desir-able in essence,the availability of many options as well as different possible combinations frequently leaves the busy clinician in the difficult situation of having to choose between one or the other,sometimes without solid evidence to support each *** addition,progress never stops and new agents are continuously *** these reason this review will try to summa-rize all the clinical trials that constitute the theoretical framework that support our daily practice but will also procure the reader with rational answers to common clinical dilemmas by critically appraising the current ***,we will provide with a compilation of promising new agents that may soon become our next line of defense against this deadly disease.

we report our recent work on mean-field potential effects on the elliptic flows of matters and antimatters in heavy ion collisions leading to the production of a baryon-rich *** the framework of a multiphase transport(AmPT) model that includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions,we have found that including mean-field potentials in the hadronic phase leads to a splitting of the elliptic flows of particles and their antiparticles,providing thus a plausible explanation of the different elliptic flows between p and anti-p,K+and K-,and π+ and π- observed by the STAR Collaboration in the Beam Energy Scan(BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider(RHIC).Using a partonic transport model based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model,we have also studied the effect of scalar and vector mean fields on the elliptic flows of quarks and antiquarks in these *** quarks and antiquarks at hadronization to hadrons via the quark coalescence model,we have found that the elliptic flow differences between particles and antiparticles also depend on the strength of the quark vector coupling in baryon-rich quark-gluon plasma,providing thus the possibility of extracting information on the latter's properties from the BES program at RHIC.

The inclusion of inorganic nanoparticles in biological environments has led to the creation of hybrid nanosystems that are employed in a variety of applications. One such system includes quantum dots (QDs) coupled with the photoactive protein, bacteriorhodopsin (BR), which has been explored in developing enhanced photovoltaic devices. In this work, we have discovered that the kinetics of the BR photocycle can be manipulated using CdSe/CdS (core/shell) QDs. The photocycle lifetime of protein samples with varying QD amounts were monitored using time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. Concentration-dependent elongations of the bR and m state lifetimes were observed in the kinetic traces, thus suggesting that excitonic coupling occurs between BR and QDs. we propose that the pairing of BR with QDs has the potential to be utilized in protein-based computing applications, specifically for real-time holographic processors, which depend on the temporal dynamics of the bR and m photointermediates.

Nano-and micro-particles are being increasingly used to tune interfacial frictional properties in diverse applications,from friction modifiers in industrial lubrication to enhanced biological fluids in human osteoarthritic ***,we assessed the tribological properties of a simulated synovial fluid enriched with non-spherical,poly lactic-co-glycolic acid(PLGA)microparticles(μPL)that have been previously demonstrated for the pharmacological management of osteoarthritis(OA).Three different μPL configurations were fabricated presenting a 20μm×20μm square base and a thickness of 5μm(thin,5H μPL),10μm(10H μPL),and 20μm(cubical,20H μPL).After extensive morphological and physicochemical characterizations,the apparent Young’s modulus of the μPL was quantified under compressive loading returning an average value of~6 kPa,independently of the particle ***,using a linear two-axis tribometer,the static(μ_(s))and dynamic(μ_(d))friction coefficients of the μPL-enriched simulated synovial fluid were determined in terms of particle configuration and concentration,varying from 0(fluid only)to 6×10^(5) μPL/*** particle morphology had a modest influence on friction,possibly because the μPL were fully squeezed between two mating surfaces by a 5.8 N normal load realizing boundary-like lubrication ***,friction was observed to depend on the dimensionless parameterw,defined as the ratio between the total volume of the μPL enriching the simulated synovial fluid and the volume of the fluid *** coefficients of friction were documented to grow withwreaching a plateau of μ_(s)~0.4 and μ_(d)~0.15,already at Ω~2×10^(-3).Future investigations will have to systematically analyze the effect of sliding velocity,normal load,and rigidity of the mating surfaces to elucidate in full the tribological behavior of μPL in the context of osteoarthritis.

During the last 15 years we have witnessed an unprecedented expansion in the drugs developed to target human epidermal growth factor receptor-2(HER-2) positive breast cancer. Trastuzumab, pertuzumab, adotrastuzumab emtansine and lapatinib are currently food and drug administration(FDA)-approved for the treatment of breast cancer patients with HER-2 overexpressed. However, given the amount of information gathered from years of uninterrupted clinical research, it is essential to have periodic updates that succinctly recapitulate what we have learnt over these last years and help us to apply that information in our daily practice. This review will pursue that objective. we will summarize the most relevant and updated informationrelated to the state of the art management of HER-2 positive breast cancer in all the clinical scenarios including the adjuvant, neoadjuvant and metastatic settings. But we will also critically appraise that literature in order to highlight some key clinical concepts that should not be overlooked. Lastly, this review will also point out some of the most promising strategies that are currently being tested and may soon become available.

Complex regional pain syndrome type 1(CRPS-1)is a debilitating and progressive pathology in which chronic symptoms affect the functional capacity,and there are discussions about its best form of *** aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of pain exposure physical therapy(PEPT)on functional recovery of these patients and to compare with conventional *** bibliographic searches were performed with qualitative and quantitative exploratory objective of scientific articles of the last 10 years in the databases Pubmed,EBSCO and *** studies were selected to analyze:Ek et al.(2009)conducted evaluations at baseline and 3 months after the last session,with 106 *** evaluations by meent et al.‘s paper(2011)realized pre-treatment and 12 months after last session,with 20 *** Barnhoorn et al.‘s article(2015)the only one to perform controlled and randomized study with 56 patients divided into PEPT and conventional,and evaluations were pre-treatment,3,6,and 9 months after the last session;performed 5 treatment sessions of 40 minutes,as well as in the other *** were positive and significant outcomes on the intervention of PEPT in CRPS-1,showing that this treatment is effective in functional recovery of these patients.
