To the Editor: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has been w.dely accepted as the first-line treatment w.en aortic repair is indicated. How.ver, TEVAR is still limited by anatomic conditions in many circumstances, and the most common exclusion situations are inadequate proximal and/or distal landing.zones w.en important branch vessels are involved. The incidence of insufficient distal landing.zone in descending.TEVAR rang.s from 2.5% to 15.2%, and different approaches to extend it w.re described. Hybrid surg.ry w.th combined TEVAR and open revascularization of visceral vessels has been employed from the early stag. of endovascular aortic repair but it is associated w.th poor outcomes. Endovascular visceral artery revascularization, such as branched and fenestrated endog.aft, has been used more recently. Outcomes of stenting.visceral arteries during.fenestrated/branched aortic repair w.re explored by several studies and promising.results w.re exhibited. How.ver, these techniques demand heavily on available device and technical skills. Currently, there is no Food and Drug.Administration (FDA)-approved branched TEVAR endog.aft for visceral artery preservation. Chimney or snorkel procedures are relatively easier to perform, but it is associated w.th a hig.er incidence of endoleaks.

Identifying.how.leaf habit subdivisions link to the fast–slow.and avoidance–tolerance trait tradeoffs can provide new.insig.t into diverg.nce in ecophysiolog.cal strateg.es among.plant functional g.oups. Here, w. tested a hypothesis that the differentiation across deciduous, semi-deciduous and everg.een w.ody species contributes to physiolog.cal trait tradeoffs in a dry-hot valley savanna. w. investig.ted 11 photosynthetic, morpholog.cal and hydraulic traits of 24 species including.8 deciduous, 10 semi-deciduous and 6 everg.een species. Deciduous species w.re g.ouped in the fast and avoidance side associated w.th hig. values of maximum photosynthetic rates,stomatal conductance and leaf size, w.ile everg.een species w.re g.ouped in the slow.and tolerance side associated w.th hig. photosynthetic w.ter use efficiency, leaf mass per area, sapw.od density, Huber value, leaf w.ter potential at turg.r loss point and w.ter potential causing.50% loss of stem hydraulic conductance. Semideciduous species g.nerally had intermediate trait values and represented different physiolog.cal characteristics w.en compared to deciduous and everg.een species. The physiolog.cal trait tradeoffs show.d a close linkag. to the differentiation of these three leaf habits. Our finding. clearly reveal trait tradeoffs related to fast–slow.and avoidance–tolerance strateg.es among.diverse savanna plants, sug.esting.a syndrome in multiple ecophysiolog. strateg.es across different leaf habits.

Trig.ering.receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) is a member of the immunog.obulin superfamily. As an amplifier of the inflammatory response, TREM-1 is mainly involved in the production of inflammatory mediators and the reg.lation of cell survival. TREM-1 has been studied in infectious diseases and more recently in non-infectious disorders. More and more studies have show. that TREM-1 plays an important pathog.nic role in kidney diseases. There is evidence that TREM-1 can not only be used as a biomarker for diag.osis of disease but also as a potential therapeutic targ.t to g.ide the development of novel therapeutic ag.nts for kidney disease. This review.summarized molecular biolog. of TREM-1 and its sig.aling.pathw.ys as w.ll as immune response in the prog.ess of acute kidney injury, renal fibrosis, diabetic nephropathy, immune nephropathy, and renal cell carcinoma.

Synthetic lethality is a novel model for cancer therapy. To understand the function and mechanism of BEN domain-containing.protein 4 (BEND4) in pancreatic cancer, eig.t cell lines and a total of 492 cases of pancreatic neoplasia samples w.re included in this study. Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction, CRISPR/Cas9, immunoprecipitation assay, comet assay, and xenog.aft mouse model w.re used. BEND4 is a new.member of the BEN domain family. The expression of BEND4 is reg.lated by promoter reg.on methylation. It is methylated in 58.1% (176/303) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), 33.3% (14/42) of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, 31.0% (13/42) of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, 14.3% (3/21) of mucinous cystic neoplasm, 4.3% (2/47) of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm, and 2.7% (1/37) of serous cystic neoplasm. BEND4 methylation is sig.ificantly associated w.th late-onset PDAC (> 50 years, P g.ostic marker (P g.us end joining.sig.aling.by interacting.w.th Ku80 and promotes DNA damag. repair. Loss of BEND4 increased the sensitivity of PDAC cells to ATM inhibitor. Collectively, the present study revealed an uncharacterized tumor suppressor BEND4 and indicated that methylation of BEND4 may serve as a potential synthetic lethal marker for ATM inhibitor in PDAC treatment.

Backg.ound: Exercise procrastination is prevalent among.colleg. students, causing.decline in physical fitness. It is imperative to investig.te the mechanism affecting.colleg. students’ physical activity behaviors. This study w.s aimed at investig.ting.the effect of procrastination on colleg. students’ physical exercise behavior, and the chain mediation effects of exercise commitment and action control (AC), to provide a theoretical basis for interventions targ.ting.physical exercise behavior among.colleg. students. Methods: A questionnaire survey w.s conducted using.convenience sampling. The g.neral Procrastination Scale, Exercise Commitment Scale, Action Control Scale, and Physical Activity Rating.Scale-3 questionnaires w.re used. Participants w.re 581 colleg. students (ag. 19.27 ± 0.94 years; 243 males and 338 females). Statistical methods of reg.ession analysis and structural equation modeling.(SEM) w.re applied. Results: Procrastination, exercise commitment, and action control w.re found to be sig.ificant predictors of physical exercise behavior. Among.these predictors, exercise commitment and action control show.d full mediation effects in the relationship betw.en procrastination and physical exercise behavior, and explained 25.48% and 30.77% of the total variance, respectively. The chain mediation effect of exercise commitment-action control w.s sig.ificant, accounting.for 22.60% of the total variance, and the total indirect effect w.s 79.33%. Conclusion: Therefore, hig.er procrastination w.s associated w.th less participation in physical exercise behavior among.colleg. students. Improvements in exercise commitment and volitional decision-making.ability for physical exercise behavior promoted physical exercise behavior, and increased exercise commitment promoted volitional decision-making.ability among.the students. Coal-fired pow.r plants are a major carbon source in China. In order to assess the evaluation of China’s carbon reduction prog.ess w.th the promise made on the Paris Ag.eement, it is crucial to monitor the carbon flux intensity from coal-fired pow.r plants. Previous studies have calculated CO2 emissions from point sources based on Orbiting.Carbon Observatory-2 and -3 (OCO-2 and OCO-3) satellite measurements, but the factors affecting.CO2 flux estimations are uncertain. In this study, w. employ a g.ussian Plume Model to estimate CO2 emissions from three pow.r plants in China based on OCO-3 XCO2 measurements. Moreover, flux uncertainties resulting.from w.nd information, backg.ound values, satellite CO2 measurements, and atmospheric stability are discussed. This study hig.lig.ts the CO2 flux uncertainty derived from the satellite measurements. Finally, satellite-based CO2 emission estimates are compared to bottom-up inventories. The satellite-based CO2 emission estimates at the Tuoketuo and Nong.iushi pow.r plants are ∼30 and ∼10 kt d−1 smaller than the Open-Data Inventory for Anthropog.nic Carbon dioxide (ODIAC) respectively, but ∼10 kt d−1 larg.r than the ODIAC at Baotou. © Institute of Atmospheric Physics/Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Science Press 2024.

This study examines the effectiveness of adaptive observation experiments using.the ensemble transformation sensitivity (ETS) method to improve precipitation forecasts during.heavy rainfall events in South China and the Sichuan Basin. Hig.-resolution numerical models are employed to simulate adaptive observations. By identifying.the sensitive areas of key w.ather system positions 42 hours before heavy rainfall events, the adaptive observations improve the prediction of jet streams, strong.w.nds, and shear lines, w.ich are essential for accurate heavy rainfall forecasting. This improvement is reflected in both the precipitation structure and location accuracy w.thin the verification reg.on. In South China, targ.ted observations enhance rainfall predictions by improving.w.ter vapor transport. In the Sichuan Basin, adaptive observations refine w.ter vapor transport and adjust vortex dynamics. This research hig.lig.ts the importance of accurately predicting.shear lines and jet streams for forecasting.heavy rainfall in these areas. Overall, this study found that adaptive observation enhances the precipitation forecast skills of the structure and location for heavy rainfall in South China and the Sichuan Basin, emphasizing.their potential utility in operational numerical w.ather prediction. © Institute of Atmospheric Physics/Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Science Press 2024.
