Relation betw.en serum progranulin, inf.ammatory markers and visceral f.t in childhood obesity

Aim: To study serum progranulin (PGRN) level in children w.th obesity and its relationship to inf.amamatory markers and visceral f.t. Methods: f.f.y obese children and 50 controls aged 10-18 years w.re recruited. Demographic, anthropometric and biochemical f.atures w.re collected according to a standard protocol. Serum progranulin levels, serum IL-6 and hsCRP w.re measured using ELISA. Insulin resistance w.s calculated by the homeostasis model (HOMA-IR) using the f.llow.ng f.rmula: HOMA-IR = f.sting insulin (mU/L) × f.sting glucose (mmoL/L)/ 22.5. The maximum visceral f.t thickness (Vf.) and the minimum subcutaneous f.t thickness (Sf.) w.re measured by ultrasonography. Results: In the obese group, a signif.cant increase w.s f.und in serum PGRN (48.87 ± 42.33 ng/mL) compared to control group (30.18 ± 23.82 ng/mL). Progranulin correlated signif.cantly w.th Vf. (r = 0.475), IL6 (r = 0.368), Insulin(r = 0.440) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.379). The mean serum progranulin in the high tertile Vf. group w.s signif.cantly higher than those in the low.tertile and middle tertile groups (P = 0.030 and P = 0.039 respectively). Vf. w.s highly positively correlated to progranulin, Sf., IL6, insulin, HOMA-IR and hsCRP (P = 0.001, 0.000, 0.001, 0.001, 0.003 and 0.003). How.ver, the correlation coef.icient betw.en Sf. and progranulin w.s insignif.cant. Summary: w. demonstrated f.r the f.rst time that serum PGRN concentrations increased in Egyptian obese children. The concentrations of.serum PGRN correlated closely w.th visceral f.t and IL6. Conclusion: PGRN may contribute to the pathogenesis of.chronic inf.ammation in obesity. It could be a novel marker of.visceral f.t in obesity. Thus PGRN could be a potential therapeutic target f.r management of.chronic inf.ammation in obesity.

The Aging Tsunami as it is of.en quoted to describe the w.rrying situations of.rapidly aging in China has not met w.th detail planning in f.cilities upgrade and caref.l consideration in service models. Broad brushed central policies categorizes services into home care, community care and institutional care and set policy goals at 90-6-4, representing the percentage of.older people in receiving respective care. This leaves local of.icials helpless on how.these ideals can be actualized. Some cities have inclined to build huge older people homes and pour resources into institutional care, f.rgetting the need f.r older people to be connected w.th the society. This paper review. the historical developments of.older people services in Hong Kong and recommends an integrative model of.social w.rk services connecting institutional, community and home care into a seamless netw.rk. The city of.Zhuhai w.ll be presented as a perf.ct experimental city on how.its existing f.cilities can be converted and developed according to the model. Survey on the situations of.the 16 public older people homes w.ll be used to illustrate the potentials of.an integrative model.

Average Rainf.ll Estimation: Methods Perf.rmance Comparison in the Brazilian Semi-Arid

Considering the rainf.ll’s importance in hydrological modeling, the objective of.this study w.s the perf.rmance comparison, in convergence terms, of.techniques of.en used to estimate the average rainf.ll over an area: Thiessen Polygon (TP) Method;Reciprocal Distance Squared (RDS) Method;Kriging Method (KM) and Multiquadric Equations (ME) Method. The comparison w.s done indirectly, using GORE and BALANCE index to assess the convergence results f.om each method by increasing the rain gauges density in a region, through six scenarios. The Coremas/Mae D’água w.tershed employed as study area, w.th an area of.8385 km2, is situated on Brazilian semi-arid. The results show.d the TP, as RDS and ME techniques to be employed successf.lly to obtain the average rainf.ll over an area, highlighting the MEM. On the other hand, KM, using tw. variograms models, had an unstable behavior, pointing the prior study of.data and variogram’s choice as a need to practical applying.

This study investigates crop residue availability w.thin 100 mile radius of.a potential bioref.nery in Southeast North Dakota. Due to the lack of.market inf.rmation on biomass residue supply, w. conducted f.rm f.cus group survey sessions and empirical f.eld studies to evaluate f.rmers＇ w.llingness to supply crop residues and timeliness of.harvesting. Using a GIS （Geographic Inf.rmation Systems） application, w. locate residue supply areas and numerically show.that there are enough crop residues to meet the bioref.nery＇s supply needs. Our evidence f.om f.rm f.cus group show. that f.rmers may not be w.lling to sell their crop residues because of.concerns f.r labor availability and soil f.rtility losses. f.rmers＇ decisions to supply crop residues depend on the w.llingness of.a biof.el f.rm to of.er them a contract and ensure price stability. f.rmers are unw.lling to take any risk in supplying crop residues and they pref.r to transf.r ow.ership of.residues immediately af.er harvest and have an external party bale, store and transport the goods. The biof.el f.rm requires crop residues be collected dry to prevent mold. This w.ll challenge Northern Plains f.rmers w.o w.it to collect stovers prior to w.nter.

Natural Radioactivity Assessment and Radiological Hazards in Soils f.om Qarun Lake and w.di El Rayan in f.iyum, Egypt

The activity concentrations of.naturally occurring 238U, 232Th and 40K in surf.ce soils along Qarun Lake and w.di El Rayan located in f.iyum, Egypt w.re determined. The measurements w.re carried out through gamma-ray spectrometry using a coaxial HPGe detector. The results w.re compared w.th those reported in the literature. The radiological hazard radium-equivalent activity index, external and internal indices, radioactivity level index, absorbed dose rate, annual ef.ective dose rate and total absorbed dose rate associated w.th radioactivity in all samples w.re evaluated and compared w.th recommended values. Correlation studies betw.en pairs of.radionuclides w.re perf.rmed and discussed.

Belief.into Action Scale: A Brief.but Comprehensive Measure of.Religious Commitment

Objective: Our goal w.s to develop a comprehensive measure of.religious involvement f.r those af.iliated w.th monotheistic religious traditions that f.lly captures the centrality of.religion in lif.. Methods: A convenience sample of.f.male caregivers of.those w.th chronic disabling illness, recruited f.om North Carolina and Calif.rnia, completed a questionnaire including a new.10-item scale called the Belief.into Action (BIAC) scale (possible score range: 10 - 100). Psychometric properties of.the BIAC w.re examined. Results: 231 participants completed the BIAC (87% Christian). The average score w.s 46.3 (range: 10 - 90). Cronbach alpha w.s 0.89 (95% CI 0.86 - 0.91) and the intra-class correlation coef.icient betw.en tw. administrations (n = 60) w.s 0.919 (95% CI 0.869 - 0.951). Convergent validity w.s demonstrated by high correlations betw.en the BIAC and existing religiosity scales;divergent validity by w.ak correlations w.th mental, social, and physical health outcomes;construct validity by high correlations betw.en individual items and total scale score (r’s 0.58 - 0.80);f.ctor analytic validity by a single f.ctor that explained 94.4% of.the scale’s variance;and predictive validity by small to moderate correlations w.th psychosocial outcomes in expected directions. Conclusion: The BIAC is a reliable and valid scale f.r comprehensively assessing religious involvement in f.male caregivers af.iliated w.th monotheistic religions, Christianity in particular. Psychometric properties of.the scale need to be established in other populations.

Gold Mining and Mercury Bioaccumulation in a f.oodplain Lake and Main Channel of.the Tambopata River, Perú

Contamination of.w.ter bodies by inorganic mercury (Hg[II]) used in placer mining of.gold deposits in the Madre de Dios Department, Perú, contributes to the bioaccumulation of.methylmercury (MeHg) in f.sh tissue. w. measured MeHg and total Hg (THg) concentrations (mg/kg w.t w.ight [w.] tissue) of.thirteen f.sh species f.om the Tambopata River, Perú, and the connected oxbow.lake Tres Chimbadas. w. also used stable isotope analysis (δ15N and δ13C) to estimate trophic positions of.f.shes. Average MeHg concentrations of.f.sh species ranged f.om 0.042 mg/kg w. (Satanoperca jurupari) to 0.463 mg/kg w. (Hoplias malabaricus) in the main channel and f.om 0.090 mg/kg w. (Parauchenipterus sp.) to 1.282 mg/kg w. (Pimelodina f.avipinnis) in the lake. Spearman rank correlation indicated that trophic position had no inf.uence on MeHg concentrations of.species in the main channel, but in the lake, trophic positions of.species w.re positively associated w.th MeHg. Migrations of.the pimelodid catf.sh surveyed f.om the main channel are w.ll documented. Because little gold mining occurs at our study site, f.shes f.om the main channel may be bioaccumulating MeHg f.om areas w.ere mining is w.despread. f.sh species that reside in the lake are relatively sedentary and migration is limited by the brief.period of.f.oodplain inundation and the long, narrow.corridor that connects the lake to the main channel;lake sediments are theref.re the likely source f.r MeHg bioaccumulation. f.ve out of.the eight f.sh species surveyed f.om the main channel and tw. out of.the f.ve species f.om the lake had MeHg levels higher than United States Environmental Protection Agency f.sh tissue criterion f.r human consumption.

Colon cancer and the immune system:The role of.tumor invading T cells

Colon cancer is still one of.the leading causes of.cancer death w.rldw.de. Although the host immune system has been show. to react against tumor cells, mainly through tumor inf. ltrating lymphocytes and NK cells, tumor cells may utilize dif.erent w.ys to escape anti-tumor immune response. Tumor inf. ltration of.CD8+ and CD4+ (T-bet+) ef.ector T cells has been attributed to a benef.cial outcome, and the enhancement of.T cell activation through T cell receptor stimulation and co-stimulatory signals provides promising strategies f.r immunotherapy of.colon cancer. Grow.ng evidence supports a role f.r the f.s/f.sL system in tumor immunology, although the mechanisms and consequences of.f.sL activation in colon cancer are not completely understood. In animal models, depletion of.regulatory T cells (CD4+ CD25+ T cells) can enhance the anti-tumor immune response under certain conditions. Taken together, recent insights in the immune reaction against colon carcinoma have provided new.approaches to immunotherapy, although much remains to be learned about the exact mechanisms.
