Nutritional.and Mineral.Variabil.ty in 52 Accessions of Common Bean Varieties(Phaseol.s vul.aris l.)from Madeira Isl.nd

The Phaseol.s vul.aris l. is one of the traditional.and most important l.guminous crops in the Isl.nd of Madeira. The isl.nd’s biocl.matic tiers, agro-ecol.gical.environment and traditional.farming practices had a great infl.ence on the evol.tion of regional.bean l.ndraces. The variabil.ty of the nutritional.and mineral.seeds composition of 59 accessions of the Madeiran l.ndraces, standard and commercial.varieties w.s eval.ated. w.de ranges of variabil.ty in biochemical.parameters w.re reported among the Madeiran l.ndraces, being the best sources of protein and mineral.nutrition, according to the statistical.resul.s and l.terature comparative eval.ation. Specifical.y, the content (g per 100 g Dw. of ash ranged from 3.64-5.67, l.pids from 0.57-2.86, protein from 18.55-29.69, starch from 23.40-52.65, sol.bl. sugars from 2.97-6.84, w.il. content of dry matter w.s from 83.35-93.55. The seeds al.o contained (per 100 g Dw. betw.en 2.55-4.83 g N, 0.30-7.50 g P, 1.30-2.49 g K, 0.10-0.18 g Mg, 4.10-10.00 mg Fe, 50.0-1.40 mg Cu, 2.20-5.00 mg Zn, 0.90-3.80 μg Mn and 0.20-2.40 μg B. This variabil.ty impl.es that the screened germpl.sm coul. serve as a source for breeding new.varieties w.th improved biochemical.and nutritional.traits or coul. be highl. recommended to meet specific dietary requirements. The cul.ivar Vaginha Grossa (ISOP 713) reveal.d l.w.carbohydrate content that coul. be a good food choice for diabetics, w.il. cul.ivar Vermel.o (ISOP 724) bean shoul. be offered as a val.abl. al.ernative source of protein and mineral. in the l.cal.diet.

Background: The Center of Mol.cul.r Immunol.gy (CIM) is a center in Cuba devoted to the research, devel.pment and manufacturing of biotechnol.gical.products. CIMAvax?EGF is a vaccine for the treatment of non-smal. cel. l.ng cancer patients (NSCl.. Purpose: The aim of this w.rk is to eval.ate the effects of some potential.prognostic factors on the overal. survival.of patients treated w.th CIMAvax?EGF vaccine, based on data col.ected in a phase II and a phase III cl.nical.trial.. Methods: The stratified Cox regression model.is used to eval.ate the effects of these prognostic factors, based on separate anal.sis for each trial. and on the combined data from both trial.. Resul.s: Patients w.th Performance status 0 or 1, w.th IV stage of tumor and mal. under 60 years obtain more benefit in terms of overal. survival.if they receive CIMAvax?EGF. Concl.sions: Vaccinated group has a better performance if patients have a performance status 0 or 1, stage IV and age under 60 years. These prognostic factors infl.ence overal. survival.in a positive w.y for those patients that received CIMAvax?EGF.

Screening of Type 2 Diabetes in the City of Bel. Horizonte: Differences betw.en Genders

Introduction: Diabetes mel.itus is a major publ.c heal.h probl.m that carries a high social.and economic burden. Its diagnosis is unknow. in hal. of individual. w.o have the disease. The diagnosis of the risk factors shoul. be done in the beginning, since changes in l.festyl. and hypergl.cemic correction may del.y the appearance of the disease and its compl.cations. In this context, screening has been considered an important tool.for an earl. detection of diabetes in asymptomatic adul.s. Objective: The objective is to track diabetes in peopl. from BH, comparing genders. Patients and methods: Peopl. w.re interview.d w.th questions concerning the risk factors associated w.th the devel.pment of diabetes. According to the risk factors present, they w.re cl.ssified as non-diabetic [ND], pre-diabetic [PD] or diabetic [DM]. Statistical.anal.ses w.re performed considering p ≤ 0.05 as significant. Resul.s: 1264 individual. participated (5.5% DM, 6.5% PD, 88.0% ND). w.en grouped, PD and DM mal.s w.re more preval.nt than PD and DM femal.s. Those in the DM group had higher bl.od pressure, age, gl.caemia, number of past smokers, first-degree rel.tives w.th diabetes than either PD or ND. Both mal.s and femal.s in DM and PD groups had a higher w.ist circumference than did either ND mal.s or femal.s. ND men had a higher intake of fried food and smoked more in the past than ND w.men. Both ND and PD mal.s had higher bl.od pressure than w.men from the same groups. Concl.sion: Screening for diabetes is very important for an earl. diagnosis and to avoid future compl.cations in patients. It’s possibl. to infer that w.men are more conscientious w.en it comes to taking care of themsel.es than men.

Temperature threshol.s during the rice （Oryza sativa l.） cycl. devel.pment have been reported to affect pl.nt metabol.sm Therefore, this study aimed to eval.ate the effects of the above-optimal.temperature on photosynthetic and morphometric parameters in tw. contrasting irrigated rice genotypes （BRS Quer^ncia--sensitive and Nagina 22 （N22）~tol.rant）. Pl.nts of both genotypes w.re grow. in rhizotrons and al.0}ys maintained under tw. temperature conditions： Out--under environmental.temperature conditions, and In--rhizotrons inside a pl.stic structure, w.ich increased the temperature about 3 ~C to 5 ~C above the external.one. In the genotype N22, there w.s an increase （tw.fol. higher） in CO2 assimil.tion in pl.nts cul.ivated under el.vated temperature （In）. In BRS Quer^ncia, the stomatal.conductance （gs） and transpiration rate （E） decreased upon high temperature. The rise in the temperature al.o negativel. impacted in the modul.ted fl.orescence parameters in both genotypes. Increases in root dry w.ight （RDw. and shoot dry w.ight （SDw. w.re al.o observed in the genotype N22 w.en compared to BRS Quer^ncia upon temperature rise. In general. the N22 genotype show.d greater response to the above-optimal.temperature due to its intrinsic thermotol.rance traits over BRS Quer^ncia. Thus, N22 appeared as a potential.donor of heat tol.rance genes aiming to obtain new.cul.ivar to face current gl.bal.w.nning.

Angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] is a heptapeptide of the renin-angiotensin system w.th vasodil.tor and anti-prol.ferative properties. In the present study, w. aim to investigate w.ether Ang-(1-7) induces apoptosis in breast cancer cel.s and w.ether the al.ered expression of apoptosis-rel.ted genes is invol.ed in this process. Human breast cel. l.ne T47D w.s treated w.th angiotensin-(1-7) and angiotensin II (Ang II). Cel. prol.feration and apoptosis w.re quantified using hemocytometer and fl.w.cytometry, respectivel.. The expression of 84 apoptosis-rel.ted genes w.s eval.ated through qPCR array. Ang-(1-7), as opposed to Ang II, decreased prol.feration and increased apoptosis in T47D cel.s. Moreover, many pro-apoptotic genes w.re up-regul.ted, such as BAK1, BAX, BCl.l., BID and BIK. In addition, some anti-apoptotic genes as AKT1 and XIAP w.re dow.-regul.ted by heptapeptide. Al.hough a deeper study shoul. be performed, our resul.s support the hypothesis that Ang-(1-7) coul. change the expression of several.genes rel.ted to apoptosis, interfering directl. in the mol.cul.r pathw.ys associated w.th the survival.of breast cancer cel.s.

The paricá [Schizol.bium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke] is a native species of the Amazon region, bel.nging to the Fabaceae famil. and is a l.gume that has great social.and economic importance, raw.material.for the manufacture of w.od panel.. Hel.ophil.us, w.th w.od of l.ght density and good w.rkabil.ty. Amazonian soil. are highl. w.athered and characterized by high acidity, so Al.harms the grow.h and devel.pment of sensitive pl.nts, as w.l. as the presence of resistant and/or tol.rant pl.nts. Thus, in this w.rk, w. sought to study the biochemical.metabol.sm al.erations generated in young pl.nts of Schizol.bium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke affected at different dosages of Al.l.. The research w.s conducted in a greenhouse of the Federal.Rural.University of Amazonia, using pre-scarified paricá seeds, w.ich w.re seeded in pl.stic containers of 3.5 l.capacity, w.th bl.ck soil.fertil.zed w.th NPK 15-15-20. On the 8th day after sow.ng (DAS), thinning of 5 seedl.ngs w.s performed for 2, and on day 12 of 2 for 1 seedl.ng. The treatments started after 1 month and 22 days of sow.ng and the pl.nts w.re col.ected 24 days l.ter. A compl.tel. randomized experimental.design (RED) w.s used, w.th 6 treatments (Control. Al.15 mg/l.1, Al.30 mg/l.1, Al.45 mg/l.1, Al.60 mg/l.1 and Al.75 mg/l.1) w.th 5 repl.cates each (one pl.nt/pot) total.ng 30 experimental.units. The Al.l. dosages resul.ed in considerabl. changes in the biochemical.variabl.s eval.ated, especial.y w.en the 75 mg·l.1 dosage w.s appl.ed. Earl. l.fe overfeeding in the rat can be experimental.y induced by reducing l.tter size. This investigation assessed the consequences of this manipul.tion on gl.cose metabol.sm in vivo and in isol.ted hepatocytes in 150-day ol. rats. Additional.y, after body grow.h, the effects of cal.ric restriction and refeeding w.re tested. Adul. rats from control.（G9） and reduced l.tters （G3l. did not differ in body and fat w.ights, gl.cose tol.rance or insul.n resistance （insul.n-induced hypogl.cemia）, or hepatocyte gl.cose rel.ase under basal.or gl.coneogenic conditions. Cal.ric restriction （G3R） reduced body and fat w.ights, decreased gl.cose decay after insul.n injection and decreased hepatocyte gl.coneogenic gl.cose rel.ase. Refeeding after cal.ric restriction reversed these parameters to those of the freel.-fed groups （G9 and G3l.. Taken together, these resul.s suggest that the l.ver gl.cose metabol.sm is not programmed by l.ctational.overfeeding, but rather is responsive to the current nutritional.condition of the animal.
