Assessing Possibilities and Limitations for Biomarker Analyses on Outcrop Samples:A Case Study on Carbonates of the Shibantan Member (Ediacaran Period, Dengying Formation, South China)

The Shibantan Member（Dengying Formation, South China） represents one of only two carbonate settings with Ediacara-type organisms and offers a rare opportunity to study the biogeochemistry of these ecosystems. To evaluate possibilities and limitations for future biomarker studies on fossil-bearing outcrop samples of the Shibantan Member, we analysed the spatial distribution of hydrocarbons in extractable organic matter（i.e. bitumen） on a millimetre scale. Our study demonstrates that the sample and most likely also other rocks from the same setting are contaminated with petroleum-derived compounds that bear the potential for erroneous interpretations in palaeo-reconstructions. The contamination was revealed by distribution patterns and amounts of extractable n-alkanes and acyclic isoprenoids. The contamination is linked to the external weathering surfaces but also to cracks within the rock, and the extent most likely depends on concentration gradients between these contamination sources. Here we show that contamination can successfully be distinguished from syngenetic signals obtained from non-extractable organic matter（i.e. kerogen） using catalytic hydropyrolysis（Hy Py）. However, we observed that decalcification is necessary to achieve sufficient yields of kerogen-bound hydrocarbons and to avoid artificial alteration of the biomarker signals due to matrix effects.

Impact of pre- and peri-operative risk factors on length of stay and hospital readmission following minimally-invasive partial nephrectomy

Recent advances in the treatment of post-stroke aphasia

Aphasia is an impairment of language use following brain damage. There is no consensual definition of aphasia beyond this general description （Code and Petheram, 2011）. In a more restricted defini- tion, however, aphasia is an impairment of linguistic processing at the phonological, morphological, lexical semantic or syntactic level which is usually caused by lesions of the left cerebral hemisphere. This impairment can affect language reception and expression depending on the various aphasic syndromes （McNeil and Pratt, 2001）. Aphasia results in restrictions in those activities of daily living which rely on communication.

THE NUCLEAR TRACK DEPTH PROFILE OF THE JILIN METEORITE

Using 43 documented drill core samples of the H_5-chondrite 'Jilin' the depth profile of GCR-and fission track densities was established. The track profile essentially reflects the GCR-track record of the second (4π-) irradiation stage of 'Jilin'. Relics of the track record of the first (2π-) exposure are indicated by a deviation from the theoretical depth profile of the 4π-exposure. No Pu-244 fission is observed ia the fission track background near the meteorite center. The atmospheric ablation thickness of the two drill cores A and B normal and parallel to the assumed surface of the 'Jilin' parent body was found to be 11±4 cm, respectively. A minimum shielding depth of the 'top' part of core A during the 2π-exposure is estimated to be～30 cm. Near surface deviations of the experimental track data from theory are ascribed to a short-term moderate heating event (equivalent to 24h,～370℃) no more than 0.4 Ma ago. The resulting partial track annealing in a surface layer of ～15—20 cm thickness of the preatmospheric body can explain the lack of GCR-tracks in Jilin samples from very shallow depths that are based on ^(60)Co measurements.

Analysis for Effects of Temperature Rise of PV Modules upon Driving Distance of Vehicle Integrated Photovoltaic Electric Vehicles

The development of vehicle integrated photovoltaics-powered electric vehicles (VIPV-EV) significantly reduces CO2 emissions from the transport sector to realize a decarbonized society. Although long-distance driving of VIPV-EV without electricity charging is expected in sunny regions, driving distance of VIPV-EV is affected by climate conditions such as solar irradiation and temperature rise of PV modules. In this paper, detailed analytical results for effects of climate conditions such as solar irradiation and temperature rise of PV modules upon driving distance of the VIPV-EV were presented by using test data for Toyota Prius and Nissan Van demonstration cars installed with high-efficiency InGaP/GaAs/InGaAs 3-junction solar cell modules with a module efficiency of more than 30%. The temperature rise of some PV modules studied in this study was shown to be expressed by some coefficients related to solar irradiation, wind speed and radiative cooling. The potential of VIPV-EV to be deployed in 10 major cities was also analyzed. Although sunshine cities such as Phoenix show the high reduction ratio of driving range with 17% due to temperature rise of VIPV modules, populous cities such as Tokyo show low reduction ratio of 9%. It was also shown in this paper that the difference between the driving distance of VIPV-EV driving in the morning and the afternoon is due to PV modules’ radiative cooling. In addition, the importance of heat dissipation of PV modules and the development of high-efficiency PV modules with better temperature coefficients was suggested in order to expand driving range of VIPV-EV. The effects of air-conditioner usage and partial shading in addition to the effects of temperature rise of VIPV modules were suggested as the other power losses of VIPV-EV.

Chemically derived graphene quantum dots for high-strain sensing

Graphene quantum dots(GQDs)refer to graphene fragments with a lateral dimension typically less than 100 nm,which possess unique electrical and optical properties due to the quantum confinement *** this study,we demonstrate that chemically derived graphene quantum dots show great potential for making highly stretchable and cost-effective strain sensors via an electron tunneling ***-able strain sensors are critical devices for the field of flexible or wearable electronics which are expected to maintain function up to high strain values(>30%).However,strain sensors based on conventional materials(*** or semiconductors)or metal nanoparticles(*** or silver nanoparticles)only work within a small range of strain(*** former have a working range<1%and the latter<3%).In this study,by simply dropcasting solution-processed GQDs between the interdigitated electrodes on polydimethylsiloxane,we obtained devices that can function in the range from 0.06%to over 50%ten-sile strain with both the sensitivity and working range conveniently adjustable by the concentration of GQDs *** study provides a new concept for practical applications of GQDs,revealing the poten-tial of this material for smart applications such as artificial skin,human-machine interfaces,and health monitoring.

Porcine model characterizing various parameters assessing the outcome after acetaminophen intoxication induced acute liver failure

To investigate the changes of hemodynamic and laboratory parameters during the course of acute liver failure following acetaminophen *** pigs underwent a midline laparotomy following jejunal catheter placement for further acetaminophen intoxication and positioning of a portal vein Doppler flow-probe. Acute liver failure was realized by intrajejunal acetaminophen administration in six animals, two animals were sham operated. All animals were invasively monitored and received standardized intensive care support throughout the study. Portal blood flow, hemodynamic and ventilation parameters were continuously recorded. Laboratory parameters were analysed every eight hours. Liver biopsies were sampled every 24 h following intoxication and upon *** liver failure (ALF) occurred after 28 ± 5 h resulted in multiple organ failure and death despite maximal support after further 21 ± 1 h (study end). Portal blood flow (baseline 1100 ± 156 mL/min) increased to a maximum flow of 1873 ± 175 mL/min at manifestation of ALF, which was significantly elevated (P 3/µL ± 34 × 103/µL) of intoxicated animals declined slowly to values of 145 × 103/µL ± 46 × 103/µL when liver failure occurred. Subsequent appearance of severe thrombocytopenia in liver failure resulted in values of 11 × 103/µL ± 3 × 103/µL preceding fatality within few hours which was significant (P > 0.01).CONCLUSIONDeclining portal blood flow and subsequent severe thrombocytopenia after acetaminophen intoxication precede fatality in a porcine acute liver failure model.
