Cenozoic plant diversity of Yunnan： A review

Yunnan in southwestern China is renowned for its high plant *** understand how this modern botanical richness formed,it is critical to investigate the past biodiversity throughout the geological *** this review,we present a summary on plant diversity,floristics and climates in the Cenozoic of Yunnan and document their changes,by compiling published palaeobotanical *** review demonstrates that thus far a total of 386 fossil species of ferns,gymnosperms and angiosperms belonging to 170 genera within 66 families have been reported from the Cenozoic,particularly the Neogene,of *** display the highest richness represented by 353 species grouped into 155 genera within 60 families,with Fagaceae,Fabaceae,Lauraceae and Juglandaceae being the most *** of the families and genera recorded as fossils still occur in Yunnan,but seven genera have disappeared,including Berryophyllum,Cedrelospermum,Cedrus,Palaeocarya,Podocarpium,Sequoia and *** regional extinction of these genera is commonly referred to an aridification of the dry season associated with Asian monsoon *** analyses indicate that in the late Miocene,Yunnan had three floristic regions:a northern subtropical floristic region in the northeast,a subtropical floristic region in the east,and a tropical floristic region in the *** the late Pliocene,Yunnan saw two kinds of floristic regions:a subalpine floristic region in the northwest,and two subtropical floristic regions separately in the southwest and the eastern *** floristic concepts are verified by results from our areal type analyses which suggest that in the Miocene southwestern Yunnan supported the most Pantropic elements,while in the Pliocene southwestern Yunnan had abundant Tropical Asia(Indo e Malaysia)type and East Asia and North America disjunct type that were absent from northwestern *** the late Miocene to late Pliocene through to the present,floristic compositio

We outline here an approach for understanding the biology of climate change,one that integrates data at multiple spatial and temporal ***-free trait analysis,or“ecometrics,”is based on the idea that the distribution in a community of ecomorphological traits such as tooth structure,limb proportions,body mass,leaf shape,incubation temperature,claw shape,any aspect of anatomy or physiology can be measured across some subset of the organisms in a *** of temporal or spatial scale,traits are the means by which organisms interact with their environment,biotic and *** measures these interactions by focusing on traits which are easily measurable,whose structure is closely related to their function,and whose function interacts directly with local *** trait distributions are thus a comparatively universal metric for exploring systems dynamics at all *** main challenge now is to move beyond investigating how future climate change will affect the distribution of organisms and how it will impact ecosystem services and to shift the perspective to ask how biotic systems interact with changing climate in general,and how climate change affects the interactions within and between the components of the whole biotic-physical *** believe that it is possible to provide believable,quantitative answers to these *** of this we have initiated an IUBS program iCCB(integrative Climate Change Biology).

Vegetation and Climate Reconstruction of the Planalto in Rio Grande do Sul, South Brazil (Late Glacial and Holocene)

A 405 cm long core was drilled in the Aparados da Serra National Park (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) at the end of 1999, and in all, 23 samples were taken for palynological investigation. The cores’ age is estimated at 27 000 a BP based on three radiocarbon dates taken from different depths of the core. Palynological methods were used to reconstruct the history of vegetation and climate change. Four different plant associations were recognized: ① lake plankton and shore plants; ② mire and swamp plants; ③ gallery-forest plants; ④ campos vegetation. Climate changed from cold glacial conditions mainly influenced by the South Pole throughout several transition stages to today’s humid warm climate, mainly being influenced by the Brazil stream.

Middle Miocene vegetation and climate in the central and southern part of Yunnan,China

In order to understand the Neogene vegetation succession and climatic changes in Southwest China,we reconstructed the Middle Miocene vegetation and climate at four localities,which are at different latitudes(24°19’25.3 "N / 23°35’10.2" N / 22°27’44.5 "N / 21°17’05.9" N) along the SW side of the Mao Mountains in Yunnan *** palynological assemblages obtained from the four localities suggest that the Middle Miocene vegetation there was composed of mixed evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forests with some coniferous forests growing under subtropical *** on the palynological data,seven paleoclimatic parameters of the four localities are obtained by applying the method of Co-existence Approach and compared with the modern and the Late Miocene and Late Pliocene climatic parameters in *** comparison revealed that:1) Among the four palynological assemblages,the abundance of angiosperms increase while those of gymnosperms and pteridophytes decrease along the gradient of latitudes from north to south.2) The mean annual temperature(MAT) and mean coldest monthly temperature(MCMT) were obviously lower in Middle Miocene than today(MAT:13.2 to 14.6 comp.17.7 to 21 ℃;MCMT:2.9 comp.10.9 to 15.2℃).It suggests that the Ailao Mountains were not high enough to block the summer monsoon and the winter monsoon.3) In contrast to the Neogene global cooling,the regional values of the MAT and MCMT in Yunnan increased and accompanied by a decrease of the difference of temperature between the coldest and warmest months(18.4℃ to 19.1 ℃ comp.9.5℃ to 12.3℃) since Middle *** may be linked to a gradual reduction in the strength of the Asian winter monsoon as the Tibetan Plateau was uplifted.

Based on palynological and geochemical data(Organic Carbon-C_(org)and Sulphur-S)of sedimentary samples from a vibrocore,considerations about the palaeoenvironmental evolution of Itapeva Lake region during the Holocene are *** analysed core(BOXVI)consists in its lowermost part of a fine to medium sand packet,rich in glauconitic minerals,whose upper limit is considered to be the Holocene-Pleistocene *** Cluster analysis on palynomorphs combined with C_(org)and S data,it was possible to distinguish four zones related to the Holocene transgression-regression *** in C_(org)and S data permitted the recognition of changes in *** 1 represents the beginning of the Holocene sedimentation;palynomorphs composition reveals a marsh environment under predominating freshwater *** Zone 2,the occurrence of dinoflagellate cysts and high S values,indicating brackish water,reflects Holocene sea level highstand around *** concentration of Cyperaceae associated with a significant increase in C_(org)in Zone 3 indicates a typical marsh environment influenced at least sometimes by higher saline water,reflecting a regression *** natans(L)*** Cyperaceae grains are considered to be the most significant palynomorpha in Zone 4,characterising a freshwater *** on the occurrence of dinoflagellates sample 2,Operculodinium sp.,related to marine to estuarine environments,a question arises regarding about the time at which BarrierⅣbecame completely closed.
