The soil-borne fungal pathogen Verticillium Iongisporum causes vascular disease on Brassicaceae host plants such as oilseed rape. The fungus colonizes the root xylem and moves upwards to the foliage where disease symptoms become visible. Using Arabidopsis as a model for early gene induction, we performed root transcriptome analyses in re- sponse to hyphal growth immediately after spore germination and during penetration of the root cortex, respectively. Infected roots showed a rapid reprogramming of gene expression such as activation of transcription factors, stress-, and defense-related genes. Here, we focused on the highly coordinated gene induction resulting in the production of tryp- tophan-derived secondary metabolites. Previous studies in leaves showed that enzymes encoded by CYP81F2 and PEN2 （PENETRATION2） execute the formation of antifungal indole glucosinolate （IGS） metabolites. In Verticillium-infected roots, we found transcriptional activation of CYP81F2 and the PEN2 homolog PEL 1 （PEN2-LIKE1）, but no increase in antifungal IGS breakdown products. In contrast, indole-3-carboxylic acid （13CA） and the phytoalexin camalexin accumulated in infected roots but only camalexin inhibited Verticillium growth in vitro. Whereas genetic disruption of the individual metabolic pathways leading to either camalexin or CYP81F2-dependent IGS metabolites did not alter Verticillium-induced disease symptoms, a cyp79b2 cyp79b3 mutant impaired in both branches resulted in significantly enhanced susceptibility. Hence, our data provide an insight into root-specific early defenses and suggest tryptophan-derived metabolites as active anti- fungal compounds against a vascular pathogen.

The organization of the 2nd International Symposium on Advances in Pharmaceutical Analysis in the capital city of Flanders, Lille, was both an exciting and challenging project because the idea of an annual meeting between our two long cooperating Schools of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Wuhan and Lille, stood to reason.

Photonic integrated circuit components based on amorphous silicon-on-insulator technology

We present integrated-optic building blocks and functional photonic devices based on amorphous siliconon-insulator technology. Efficient deep-etched fiber-to-chip grating couplers, low-loss single-mode photonic wire waveguides, and compact power splitters are presented. Based on the sub-μm photonic wires, 2 × 2 Mach–Zehnder interferometers and add/drop microring resonators(MRRs) with low device footprints and high finesse up to 200 were realized and studied. Compact polarization rotators and splitters with ≥10 d B polarization extinction ratio were fabricated for the polarization management on-chip. The tuning and trimming capabilities of the material platform are demonstrated with efficient microheaters and a permanent device trimming method, which enabled the realization of energy-efficient photonic circuits. Wavelength multiplexers in the form of cascaded filter banks and 4 × 4 routers based on MRR switches are presented. Fabrication imperfections were analyzed and permanently corrected by an accurate laser-trimming method, thus enabling eight-channel multiplexers with record low metrics of sub-m W static power consumption and ≤1°C temperature overhead. The high quality of the functional devices, the high tuning efficiency, and the excellent trimming capabilities demonstrate the potential to realize low-cost, densely integrated, and ultralow-power 3D-stacked photonic circuits on top of CMOS microelectronics.

The effects of two chlorinated chiral stationary phases, namely, Lux Cellulose-2 and Lux i-Cellulose-5, flow-rate, percentage of co-solvent and chemical structures of the compounds on retention and resolution were studied within this article. In this work a backpressure of 150 bar, a temperature of 40 ℃ and 10% of methanol as co-solvent were chosen as operating conditions. The optimum flow-rate was 2 mL/min. The percentage of co-solvent was studied between 7.5% and 15%.We have observed that 15% of methanol gave the best results for most of the compounds. For all the derivatives, the Lux Cellulose-2 provided better resolutions going from 1.50 to 3.59 compared with Lux i-Cellulose-5.

Risk factors and clinical indicators for the development of biliary strictures post liver transplant:Significance of bilirubin

AIM To identify risk factors associated with the formation of biliary strictures post liver transplantation over a period of 10-year in *** Data on liver donors and recipients in Queensland between 2005 and 2014 was obtained from an electronic patient data *** addition,intra-operative and post-operative characteristics were collected and a logistical regression analysis was performed to evaluate their association with the development of biliary *** Of 296 liver transplants performed,285(96.3%) were from brain dead *** strictures developed in 45(15.2%) *** stricture formation(n = 25,48.1%) was the commonest complication,with 14(58.3%) of these occurred within 6-mo of transplant.A percutaneous approach or endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was used to treat 17(37.8%) patients with biliary *** reconstruction was initially or ultimately required in 22(48.9%) *** recipients developing biliary strictures,bilirubin was significantly increased within the first postoperative week(Day 7 total bilirubin 74 μmol/L vs 49 μmol/L,P = 0.012).In both univariate and multivariate regression analysis,Day 7 total bilirubin > 55 μmol/L was associated with the development of biliary stricture *** addition,hepatic artery thrombosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis were identified as independent risk *** In addition to known risk factors,bilirubin levels in the early post-operative period could be used as a clinical indicator for biliary stricture formation.

Substrate-decoupled,bulk-acoustic wave gyroscopes:Design and evaluation of next-generation environmentally robust devices

This paper reports on a new type of high-frequency mode-matched gyroscope with significantly reduced dependencies on environmental stimuli such as temperature,vibration,and shock.A novel stress-isolation system is used to effectively decouple an axis-symmetric bulk-acoustic wave(BAW)vibratory gyro from its substrate,minimizing the effect that external sources of error have on the offset and scale factor of the ***-decoupled(SD)BAW gyros with a resonance frequency of 4.3 MHz and Q values near 60000 were implemented using the high aspect ratio poly and single-crystal silicon(HARPSS)process to achieve ultra-narrow capacitive ***-level packaged sensors were interfaced with a customized application-specific integrated circuit(ASIC)to achieve low variations in the offset across temperature(±26°s^(−1) from−40 to 85℃),supreme random-vibration immunity(0.012°s^(−1) gRMS−1)and excellent shock *** a scale factor of 800μV(°s^(−1))^(−1),the SD-BAW gyro system attains a large full-scale range(±1250°s^(−1))with a non-linearity of less than 0.07%.A measured angle-random walk(ARW)of 0.39°/√h and a bias instability of 10.5°h^(−1) are dominated by the thermal and flicker noise of the integrated circuit(IC),*** measurements using external electronics show bias-instability values as low as 3.5°h−1,which are limited by feed-through signals coupled from the drive loop to the sense channel,which can be further reduced through proper re-routing of the gyroscope pin-out configuration.
