Carbon monoxide production using a steel mill gas in a combined chemical looping process

Up to 9% of the global CO_(2) emissions come from the iron and steel industry. Here, a combined chemical looping process to produce CO, a building block for the chemical industry, from the CO_(2) -rich blast furnace gas of a steel mill is proposed. This cyclic process can make use of abundant Fe_(3)O_(4) and CaO as solid oxygen and CO_(2) carriers at atmospheric pressure. A proof of concept was obtained in a laboratory-scale fixed bed reactor with synthetic blast furnace gas and Fe_(3)O_(4) /CaO = 0.6 kg/kg. CO production from the proposed process was investigated at both isothermal conditions(1023 K) and upon imposing a temperature program from 1023 to 1148 K. The experimental results were compared using performance indicators such as CO yield, CO space time yield, carbon recovery of the process, fuel utilisation, and solids’ *** temperature-programmed CO production resulted in a CO yield of 0.056 ± 0.002 mol per mol of synthetic blast furnace gas at an average CO space time yield of 7.6 mmol kgFe^(-1) s^(-1) over 10 cycles, carbon recovery of 48% ± 1%, fuel utilisation of 23% ± 2%, and an average calcium oxide and iron oxide utilisation of 22% ± 1% and 11% ± 1%. These experimental performance indicators for the temperature-programmed CO production were consistently better than those of the isothermal implementation mode by 20% to 35%. Over 10 consecutive process cycles, no significant losses in CO yield were observed in either implementation mode. Process simulation was carried out for 1 million metric tonnes per year of equivalent CO_(2) emissions from the blast furnace gas of a steel mill to analyse the exergy losses in both modes of operation. Comparison of the exergy efficiency of the temperature-programmed process to the isothermal process showed that the former is more efficient because of the higher CO concentration achievable,despite 20% higher exergy losses caused by heat transfer required to change temperature.

Advanced Ramming Mix Based on Fused Zirconia Stabilized by Com-bined Additives of CaO and MgO for Lining of Carbon Black Production Reactor

Fused materials from ZrO2 stabilized by CaO or MgO, or the combined additive consisting of CaO and MgO are made. With using chemical, petrographic, X-ray phase and electron microscopic researches the main characteristics of these materials are determined. It is shown that, the materials of all compositions have low water absorption; they are characterized by equal struc-ture. The materials stabilized by the combined additive consisting of CaO and MgO are presented by generally the cubic phase and a small amount of tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2 phases. Depending on CaO： MgO ratio in the materials the tetragonal ZrO2 phase settles down in a cubic matrix in the form of separate grains, and sites of net like structure in the form of a ＂woven＂ interlacing （2.9% of CaO and 2. 6% of MgO ）. An influence of the above mentioned fused stabilized ZrO2 materials and quantity of monoclinic zirconia, on the forming of zirconia mix on a phosphate bond and properties of＂ .fired samples is studied. The samples from mix based on ZrO2 stabilized by the combined additive consisting of 2.9% CaO and 2.6% MgO with 20% of monoclinic Zr02 are characterized by the highest properties： after .firing at 1 580 ~C open porosity of 14. 3% - 14. 8%, apparent density of 4. 67 -4. 69 g · cm^-5, cold crushing strength of 62 - 68 MPa, thermal shock resistance （ 1 300℃←→air） of 15 thermal cycles, linear growth of 0. 2%. The manufacturing technology of powders mix-ture for ramming mix based on the new fused material .from ZrO2 stabilized by the combined additive is developed and its production is mastered. From this mixture the large-size, shaped products on the phosphate bond are made at one carbon black production plant, which are installed in the combustion chamber of the carbon black production reactor.

We have examined the aftershock sequence and the post-seismic deformation process of the Parkfield earthquake （2004, M = 6, California, USA） source area using GPS data. This event was chosen because of the possibility of joint analysis of data from the rather dense local GPS network （from SOPAC Internet archive） and of the availability of the rather detailed aftershock sequence data （http：]/***[ ncedc[***）. The relaxation process of post-seismic deformation prolongs about the same 400 days as the seismic aftershock process does. Thus, the aftershock process and the relaxation process in deformation could be the different sides of the same process. It should be noted that the ratio of the released seismic energy and of the GPS obtained deformation is quite different for the main shock and for the aftershock stage. The ratio of the released seismic energy to the deformation value decreases essentially for the post-shock process. The similar change in the seismic energy[deformation value ratio is valid in a few other strong earthquakes. Thus, this decrease seems typical of aftershock sequences testifying for decrease of ratio of elastic to inelastic deformation in the process of post-shock relaxation when the source area appears to be mostly fractured after the main shock occurs, but the healing process had no yet sufficient time to develop.

A principal difficulty with island megalopolises is the transport problem, which results from limited sur- face land on an already developed island, on which roads and car parking can be placed. This limitation leads to traffic jams on the small number of roads and to intrusive car parking in any available surface location, resulting in safety issues. The city of vladivostok is located on the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula in the Russia Far East region （the Primorsky Krai）. This city is essentially the third capital of Russia because of its important geopolitical location. To address the car traffic problems in vladivostok, and because of the absence of places to build new roads, the city administration has pro- posed the usage of the beaches and waterfronts along the sea coast in this regard. This decision is in sharp conflict with vladivostok＇s ecological and social aspirations to be recognized as a world-class city. It also neglects the lessons that have been learned in many other waterfront cities around the world, as such cities have first built aboveground waterfront highways and later decided to remove them at great expense, in order to allow their citizens to properly enjoy the environmental and historical assets of their waterfronts. A key alternative would be to create an independent tunneled transport system along with added underground parking so that the transport problems can be addressed in a manner that enhances the ecology and INability of the city. A comparison of the two alternatives for solving the transport prob- lem, that is, underground versus aboveground, shows the significant advantages of the independent tun- nel system. Complex efficiency criteria have been developed in order to quantify the estimation of the alternative variants of the vladivostok transport system. It was determined that the underground project is almost 1.8 times more advantageous than the aboveground alternative.
