In this work, the evaluation of natural radioactivity and spontaneous fission rates was performed for 8 nuclides from the natural radioactive 238U, 235U and 232Th decay chains. For this purpose, three samples of structural materials of the neutrino detector, i.e. aluminum, titanium and glass were analyzed by gamma spectroscopy and by neutron activation analysis to quantify a specific radioactivity of the samples. According to the results of this investigation, glass and aluminum samples have maximum values of the mean uranium concentrations 7.3(7) × 10-4% and 3.1(6) × 10-5%, respectively, while the lowest value for mean concentration of the uranium was found in titanium samples to be 4.7(3) × 10-6%. Aluminum sample had maximum values of the mean thorium concentrations, 2.5(8) × 10-3%, while the lowest value for mean concentration of the thorium was found in titanium samples to be 6.2(3) × 10-7%.

At present, there are two ways to produce 99Mo in a reactor: 1) fission process—from U fission product by reaction 235U (n, f) 99Mo and 2) activation process—by radiation capture reaction 98Mo (n, γ) 99Mo. This paper presents the results of experiments performed with molybdenum carbide nano-powder to produce 99Mo. These results show the implementation of the above idea in practice.

Spontaneous gastrojejunal fistula formation is an extremely rare complication of gastric ulcer disease. We report a 77-year old woman who presented with diffuse abdominal pain, weight loss, malaise, nausea, and occasional dark stools. Laboratory tests showed extreme hyposideremic anemia with inflammatory syndrome. In addition, biochemical parameters of malnourishment were presented. Upper endoscopy revealed the patent esophagus along the full length without any pathological changes. Large and deep ulceration with perforation in the small intestine was detected in the posterior gastric wall. The small intestine loop was reached by endoscope through spontaneously developed gastrojejunal fistula. Polytopic biopsies of described ulcerative change were carried out. Histopathologically reepithelialized ulcerous zone was seen in the gastric mucosa. Also, gastrojejunal fistula was visualized after wide opening of hepatogastric and gastrocolic ligament. Jejunal loop 25 cm from ligament of Treitz was attached to mesocolon and posterior gastric wall because of ulcer penetration. Postoperative course was uneventful, Per oral intake started on the 4^th postoperative day, and the patient was discharged on the 8^th postoperative day. In summary, this case indicates that persistent symptoms of peptic ulcer disease associated with nutritional disturbances may be caused by gastrojejunal fistula.

X-ray absorption near-edge structure(XANES)spectra are the fingerprint of the local atomic and electronic structures around the absorbing ***,the quantitative analysis of these spectra is not *** with the most recent advances in this area,for a given spectrum,it is not clear a priori which structural parameters can be refined and how uncertainties should be ***,we present an alternative concept for the analysis of XANES spectra,which is based on machine learning algorithms and establishes the relationship between intuitive descriptors of spectra,such as edge position,intensities,positions,and curvatures of minima and maxima on the one hand,and those related to the local atomic and electronic structure which are the coordination numbers,bond distances and angles and oxidation state on the other *** approach overcoms the problem of the systematic difference between theoretical and experimental ***,the numerical relations can be expressed in analytical formulas providing a simple and fast tool to extract structural parameters based on the spectral *** methodology was successfully applied to experimental data for the multicomponent Fe:SiO_(2)system and reference iron compounds,demonstrating the high prediction quality for both the theoretical validation sets and experimental data.

BACKGROUND The diagnosis of West Nile virus(WNv)is challenging due to short-term and low-level viremia,flavivirus cross-reactivity,and long immunoglobulin M(IgM)*** To evaluate different methods for WNv detection[reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR),IgM/IgG antibodies,IgG avidity]in serum,cerebrospinal fluid(CSF),and urine samples of patients with confirmed WNv *** The study included patients with confirmed WNv neuroinvasive infection(n=62),asymptomatic WNv seropositive individuals(n=22),and individuals with false-positive WNv IgM antibodies(n=30).WNv RNA was detected using RT-PCR.A commercial ELISA was used to detect WNv IgM/IgG antibodies with confirmation of cross-reactive samples using a virus neutralization test(vNT).IgG-positive samples were tested for IgG *** The WNv-RNA detection rates were significantly higher in the urine(54.5%)/serum(46.4%)than in CSF(32.2%).According to the sampling time,the WNv-RNA detection rates in urine collected within 7 days/8-14/≥15 days were 29.4/66.6/62.5%(P=0.042).However,these differences were not observed in the *** median RT-PCR cycle threshold values were significantly lower in urine(32.5,IQR=28-34)than in CSF(34.5,IQR=33-36).The frequency of positive WNv IgM and IgG significantly differed according to the sampling time in serum but not in *** IgM/IgG antibodies were detected in 84.3/9.3%of serum samples collected within 7 days,100/71.1%of samples collected 8-14,and 100%samples collected after≥15 *** WNv infection was confirmed by low/borderline avidity index(AI)in 13.6%of asymptomatic individuals.A correlation between ELISA and AI was strong negative for IgM and strong positive for *** significant correlation between ELISA IgG and vNT was *** The frequency of WNv RNA and antibody detection depends on the sampling time and type of clinical *** avidity could differentiate recent WNv infections from long-persisting IgM antibo

BACKGROUND Hepatitis E virus(HEv)is an emerging virus of global health *** seroprevalence rates differ greatly according to geographic region and population *** To analyze the seroprevalence of HEv in exposed(animal-related professions)and nonexposed populations,as well as solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant *** Forestry workers(n=93),hunters(n=74),and veterinarians(n=151)represented the exposed *** general population(n=126)and pregnant women(n=118)constituted the control *** patients included liver transplant recipients(LTRs)(n=83),kidney transplant recipients(KTRs)(n=43),and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients(HSCRs)(n=39).HEv immunoglobulin G antibodies were detected using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by the immunoblot *** The HEv seroprevalence significantly differed between groups:veterinarians 15.2%,hunters 14.9%,forestry workers 6.5%,general population 7.1%,and pregnant women 1.7%.In transplant patients,the seropositivity was highest in LTRs(19.3%),while in KTRs and HSCRs,the seroprevalence was similar to the general population(6.9%and 5.1%,respectively).A significant increase in seropositivity with age was observed from 2.9%in individuals less than 30 years to 23.5%in those older than 60 *** characteristics(sex,educational level,area of residence,and number of household members),eating habits(game meat,offal,and pork products consumption),and environmental and housing conditions(drinking water supply,type of water drainage/sewer,waste disposal,domestic animals)were not associated with HEv ***,individuals who reported a pet ownership were more often seropositive compared to those who did not have pet animals(12.5%vs 7.0%).CONCLUSION The results of this study showed that individuals in professional contact with animals and LTRs are at higher risk for HEv *** addition,age is a significant risk factor for HEv
