Prevalence and determinants of delayed gastric emptying in hospitalised type 2 diabetic patients

AIM: to determine the prevalence of delayed gastric emptying (GE) in older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MEtHODS: One hundred and forty seven patients with type 2 diabetes, of whom 140 had been hospitalised, mean age 62.3 ± 8.0 years, HbA1c 9.1% ± 1.9%, treated with either oral hypoglycemic drugs or insulin were studied. GE of a solid meal (scintigraphy), autonomic nerve function, upper gastrointestinal symptoms, acute and chronic glycemic control were evaluated. Gastric emptying results were compared to a control range of hospitalised patients who did not have diabetes. RESUltS: Gastric emptying was delayed (t50 > 85 min) in 17.7% patients. Mean gastric emptying was slower in females (t50 72.1 ± 72.1 min vs 56.9 ± 68.1 min, P = 0.02) and in those reporting nausea (112.3 ± 67.3 vs 62.7 ± 70.0 min, P ly satiety (114.0 ± 135.2 vs 61.1 ± 62.6 min, P = 0.02). there was no correlation between GE with age, body weight, duration of diabetes, neuropathy, current glycemia or the total score for upper gastrointestinal symptoms. CONClUSION: Prolonged GE occurs in about 20% of hospitalised elderly patients with type 2 diabetes when compared to hospitalised patients who do not have diabetes. Female gender, nausea and early satiety areassociated with higher probability of delayed GE.

the choice that a solid system“makes”when adopting a crystal structure(stable or metastable)is ultimately governed by the interactions between electrons forming chemical *** we analyze six prototypical binary transition metal compounds and shed light on the connection between Mott physics and the behavior of the energy as a function of the spatial arrangement of the atoms in these ***,we find that the main qualitative features of this complex behavior in the Mott phase of these systems can be traced back to the fact that the strong d-electron correlations influence substantially the charge transfer mechanism,which,in turn,controls the electrostatic *** result advances our understanding of the influence of strong correlations on the crystal structure,opens a new avenue for extending structure prediction methodologies to strongly correlated materials,and paves the way for predicting and studying metastability and polymorphism in these systems.

the IEEE 802.16d communication standard uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing （OFDM）. In the widely used OFDM systems, the fast Fourier transform （FFt） and inverse fast Fourier transform pairs are used to modulate and demodulate the data constellation on the sub-carriers. In this paper, a high level implementation of a high performance FFt for OFDM modulator and demodulator is presented. the design has been coded in Verilog and targeted into Xilinx Spartan3 field programmable gate arrays. Radix-22 algorithm is proposed and used for the OFDM communication system. the design of the FFt is implemented and applied to fixed WiMAX--IEEE 802.16d communi- cation standard. the results are tabulated and the hardware parameters are compared. the proposed architecture is least in number of multipliers used and the memory size, and second to the least in number of adders used.

the nuclear spin relaxation rate （l/t1） is measured for GaAs two-dimensional （2D） electron systems in the quantum Hall regime with an all-electrical technique for agitating and probing the nuclear spins. A ＂tilted plateau＂ feature is observed near the landau level filling factor v = 1 in 1/t1 versus v. Both the width and magnitude of the plateau increase with decreasing electron density. At low temperatures, lIt1 exhibits an Arrhenius temperature dependence within the tilted plateau regime. the extracted energy gaps are up to two orders of magnitude smaller than the corresponding charge transport gaps. these results point to a nontrivial mechanism for the disorder-enhanced nuclear spin relaxation, in which microscopic inhomogeneities play a key role for the low energy spin excitations related to skyrmions.

An extraordinary(X-mode)electromagnetic wave,injected into the ionosphere by the ground-based heating facility at tromsφ,Norway,was utilized to modify the ionosphere on November 6,*** high-power high-frequency transmitter facility located at tromsφ belongs to the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific *** the experiment,stimulated electromagnetic emission(SEE)spectra were observed.A narrow continuum occurred under cold-start conditions and showed an overshoot effect lasting several *** peaks occurred on both sides of the heating frequency only in the preconditioned ionosphere and also showed an overshoot *** SEE features are probably related to the ponderomotive process in the X-mode heating experiment and are helpful for understanding the physical mechanism that generated them during the X-mode heating *** features observed in the X-mode heating experiments are novel and require further investigation.

In the context of global carbon cycle management, accurate knowledge of carbon content in forests is a relevant issue in contemporary forest ecology. We measured the above-ground and soil carbon pools in the darkconiferous boreal taiga. We compared measured carbon pools to those calculated from the forest inventory records containing volume stock and species composition data. the inventory data heavily underestimated the pools in the study area（Stolby State Nature Reserve, central Krasnoyarsk territory, Russian Federation）. the carbon pool estimated from the forest inventory data varied from 25（t ha-1）（low-density stands） to 73（t ha-1）（highly stocked stands）. Our estimates ranged from 59（t ha-1）（lowdensity stands） to 147（t ha-1）（highly stocked stands）. Our values included living trees, standing deadwood, living cover, brushwood and litter. We found that the proportion of biomass carbon（living trees）： soil carbon varied from99：1 to 8：2 for fully stocked and low-density forest stands,respectively. this contradicts the common understanding that the biomass in the boreal forests represents only16–20 % of the total carbon pool, with the balance being the soil carbon pool.
