Atrial fibrillation among Russian men and women aged 55 years and older:prevalence,mortality,and associations with biomarkers in a population-based study

Objective To examine the prevalence of atrial fibrillation(AF),its impacts on cardiovascular disease(CVD)and all-cause mortality,and the associations between AF and inflammatory and serum biomarkers in a population-based sample of *** The study is a secondary analysis of data from the Stress,Aging and Health in Russia(SAHR)survey that includes information on 1800 individuals with an average age of 68.5 years at baseline,and on their subsequent mortality during 7.4 years on *** is detected by 12-lead electrocardiogram(ECG)and 24-hour Holter *** statistical analysis includes proportional hazard and logistic regression *** Of the 1732 participants with relevant Holter data,AF was detected in 100(74 by ECG and Holter,26 by Holter only).The prevalence of AF was 5.8%for men and 7.4%for *** fully adjusted model showed strongly elevated hazard of CVD and all-cause mortality in men and women with long non-self-limiting AF(LAF).LAF was found to be negatively associated with elevated total and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol and to be positively associated with elevated markers of inflammation in *** The study assessed for the first time the prevalence and the risks of death related to AF among older *** was shown to be a strong and independent predictor of CVD and all-cause *** is unlikely to contribute to the large excess male mortality in *** finding that one-quarter of AF cases were detected only by Holter monitoring demonstrates the usefulness of diagnostics with prolonged ECG registration.

Copper,zinc,and iron bioleaching from polymetallic sulphide concentrate

bioleaching of low-grade complex Cu–Zn–Pb–Fe–Ag–Au sulphide concentrate (of Majdanpek ore body, RTb bor, Serbia) was carried out in an aerated bioleach reactor in the presence of mesophilic mixed bacterial culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. A mesophilic acidophiles culture was isolated from the acidic solution of the underground copper mine of bor, Serbia. The nutrient medium was 9K at pH 1.6. 87% of the particles were bioleaching efficiencies of 89% for zinc, 83% for copper, and 68% for iron can be achieved in the examined conditions. Kinetic analysis shows that the change in leaching corresponds to the Spencer-Topley kinetic model for diffusion-controlled topochemical reactions.

Microstructures made in optical fiber with femtosecond laser

Different types of microstructures including microchannels and microslots were made in optical fibers using femtosecond laser inscription and chemical *** with UV-inscribed fiber bragg gratings,these microstructures have miniature,robustness and high sensitivity features and have been used to implement novel devices for various sensing *** fiber microchannels were used to detect the refractive index change of liquid presenting sensitivities up to 7.4 nm/refractive index unit(RIU)and 166.7 db/RIU based on wavelength and power detection,respectively.A microslot-in-fiber based liquid core waveguide as a refractometer has been proposed and the device was used to measure refractive index,and a sensitivity up to 945 nm/RIU(10−6/pm)was *** filling epoxy in the microslot and subsequent UV light curing,a hybrid waveguide grating structure with polymer core and glass cladding was *** obtained device was highly thermal responsive,demonstrating a linear coefficient of 211 pm/◦C.

A catalog of gliadin alleles:Polymorphism of 20th-century common wheat germplasm

A new, improved version of the catalog of 182 alleles at the six Gli loci of common wheat(*** L.) shown in electrophoregrams of 128 standard genotypes was used for analysis of1060 cultivars and lines bred in the 20 th century. The most frequent alleles in the studied germplasm occurred with frequencies of 18%–40%, with 30 unique alleles, one in each cultivar. Extremely high genetic diversity was found(average H for the six main Gli loci was0.870 ± 0.046), nearly identical in winter(H = 0.831) and spring(H = 0.856) wheats but differing among 28 groups of cultivars released in 22 countries. Each country or region was characterized by its own specific set of the most frequent Gli alleles, and the 28 cultivar groups formed five main relationship clusters if polymorphism at the six Gli loci was considered. However, different levels of similarity between groups of cultivars were found if polymorphism of the A, b, or D genomes of common wheat was tested separately. In general, the 20 th century germplasm of common wheat was differentiated and structured by country or region and cultivar type(spring or winter). Each elemental genome(in particular, A and D) contributed to the structure of the polymorphism studied. We propose that the structure of the wheat germplasm was a result of natural selection under the ecoclimatic conditions of cultivation specific to each country or region. As many as 27.4% of cultivars studied violated the requirement of the DUS rules for uniformity, being represented by mixtures of two or more closely related genotypes. However, the composition of a cultivar as a set of related but different genotypes may contribute to its adaptivity, and thereby to the known high plasticity of common wheat.

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy （FLIM） has gained popularity as a sensitive technique to monitor the functional/conformational states of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide （NADH）, one of the main compounds of oxidative phosphorylation. In this letter, we apply the technique to characterize the metabolic changes in mouse embryonic fibroblast 3T3 cells upon bacterial infection. A gradual shortening of the decaying time constants in both the short and the long lifetime components of NADH＇s autofluorescence is detected. The ratio of the short and the long lifetime components＇ relative contributions, however, shows a rapid increase, indicating the rise of cellular metabolic activity over the course of infection.
