Different no-till grain production systems with Urochloa spp.affect soil microbial community structure,biomass and activity in a tropical Ultisol

Integrated grain cropping systems promote soil health(SH)and sustainability.Microbial biomass and activity(MBA)and community structure(MCS)are key to SH.Integration of maize with Urochloa pastures strongly impacts MBA and MCS.MBA is more sensitive than MCS to shifts in grain cropping systems.Systems under continuous Urochloa increased microbial activity and AMF abundance.Tropical soils are prone to degradation.Adoption of conservation agricultural practices is essential to improve soil health,which is influenced by soil microbes.In this study we analyzed shifts in microbial biomass and activity(MBA)and microbial community structure(MCS)based on fatty acid methyl esthers(FAMEs)between five no-till agricultural practices:maize monoculture(MM);maize annualy intercropped with Urochloa decumbens(M/Ud);M/Ud with soybean rotation every other year(M/Ud-S);M/Ud keeping the pasture for the next two years(M/Ud-Ud-Ud);and maize intercropped with U.ruziziensis keeping the pasture for the next two years(M/Ur-Ur-Ur).Results indicated that MBA was affected by the inclusion of Urochloa intercropping and by rotation with soybean.Systems under a longer residence time with Urochloa in the field had higherβ-glucosidase activity and soil basal respiration,indicating a greater microbial activity.MCS was less affected than MBA by the investigated cropping systems.MCS changed only in the continuous pasture systems,which were enriched in arbuscular mycorrhyzal fungi(AMF).Additionally,the continuous pasture systems had lower microbial stress ratios than the other agricultural practices.In sum,our study showed that utilization of Urochloa spp.under longer periods in no-till agricultural practices contributes to increase microbial activity,AMF abundance and decrease microbial stress ratio.These changes are primarily beneficial for soil health.

This study was conducted to assess the current stock of soil organic carbon under different agricultural land uses, soil types and soil depths in the Noun plain in western Cameroon. Three sites were selected for the study, namely Mangoum, Makeka and Fossang, representative of the three dominant soil types of the noun plain (Andosols, Acrisols and Ferralsols). Three land uses were selected per site including natural vegetation, agroforest and crop field. Soil was sampled at three depths;0 - 20 cm, 20 - 40 cm, and 40 - 60 cm. Analysis of variance showed that soil type did not significantly influence carbon storage, but rather land uses and soil depth. SOCS decreased significantly with depth in all the sites, with an average stock of 66.3 ± 15.8 tC/ha at 0 - 20 cm, compared to an average stock of 33.3 ± 7.4 tC/ha at 40 - 60 cm. SOCS was significantly highest in the natural formation with 57.2 ± 19.7 tC/ha, and lowest in cultivated fields, at 37.7 ± 10.6 tC/ha. Andosols, with their high content of coarse fragments, stored less organic carbon than Ferralsols and Acrisols.

Context/Objective: High blood pressure (HBP) currently represents the most widespread chronic non-communicable disease in Cameroon. The increase in its prevalence in the country is the result of multiple factors including economic stress imposed by precariousness, poor living conditions, sources of anxiety, anguish, depression and other behavioral disorders. Economic stress is a globalizing concept that integrates into a purely hermeneutic approach, a particular functioning of the nervous system of an individual who faces employment problems and precarious remuneration conditions. The non-satisfaction by an individual of his basic needs due to insufficient financial means can cause him to become irritable, aggressive, and socially and symbolically isolated, thereby increasing the desire to resort to morbid life models such as excessive consumption of narcotics and other psychoactive substances often associated with high blood pressure. The fight against the emergence of BPH is a complex, multifaceted and multifactorial reality that requires taking into account economic stress. The main objective of this survey is to describe the situation of economic stress within the Cameroonian population, which imposes precariousness and life models at risk of high blood pressure. Specifically, we determined the level of household income and the sources of income. Methods: A cross-sectional survey with a descriptive aim among five hundred households in the Central Region of Cameroon was conducted. A probabilistic technique called simple randomness was used. The number of households to be surveyed was determined indirectly using the Cochrane formula. Data collection in face-to-face mode using a physical questionnaire took place from July 1 to August 31, 2023, after obtaining ethical clearance from the Regional Health Research Ethics Committee, Human from the Center and an administrative authorization for data collection. This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the LTBI prevalence in prison officers worldwide. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, WoS, Embase, and BVS, including all articles related to LTBI prevalence and risk factors. After critical evaluation and qualitative synthesis of the identified articles, a meta-analysis was used. Five studies carried out between 2012 and 2022 were included, with a total sample size of 1718 prison officers. The overall LTBI prevalence was 50% [95% confidence interval [CI]: 48% - 52%;n = 816], with high heterogeneity between studies. Smoking [OR = 1.76;CI 95% = 1.26 - 2.46] and males [OR = 2.08;CI 95% = 1.31 - 3.31] were positively related to a higher LTBI prevalence among prison officers. Thus, preventive measures and the rapid and accurate diagnosis of new cases should be emphasized to ensure tuberculosis control, especially among risk groups such as prison officers.

Addressing barriers to evidence- based medicine in pediatric surgery: an introduction to the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons Evidence- Based Resource

Background Pediatric surgical practice lags behind medicine in presence and use of evidence,primarily due to time constraints of using existing tools that are not specific to pediatric surgery,lack of sufficient patient data and unstructured pediatric surgery training methods.Method We developed,disseminated and tested the effectiveness of an evidence-based resource for pediatric surgeons and researchers that provides brief,informative summaries of quality-assessed systematic reviews and meta-analyses on conflicting pediatric surgery topics.Results Responses of 91 actively practicing surgeons who used the resource were analysed.The majority of participants found the resource useful(75%),improved their patient care(66.6%),and more than half(54.2%)found it useful in identifying research gaps.Almost all participants reported that the resource could be used as a teaching tool(93%).Conclusion Lack of awareness of the resource is the primary barrier to its routine use,leading to potential calls for more active dissemination worldwide.Users of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons Evidence-Based Resource find that the summaries are useful,identify research gaps,help mitigate multiple barriers to evidence-based medicine,and may improve patient care.

Postoperative complications of colectomy and J- pouch with ileostomy versus without ileostomy in children with inflammatory bowel diseases: a systematic review and meta- analysis

Background The efficacy of performing a restorative proctocolectomy and J-pouch ileoanal anastomosis without diverting ileostomy in children with inflammatory bowel disease has been a longstanding debate.A systematic review and meta-analysis is presented comparing the occurrence of postoperative complications in children who underwent either the pouch-anal anastomosis(IPAA)with ileostomy(diverted)versus the undiverted procedure.Methods Records were sourced from CINAHL,CENTRAL,EMBASE and MEDLINE databases.Studies followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and compared postoperative complications in pediatric patients diagnosed with inflammatory diseases aged less than 18 years who underwent J-pouch with ileostomy versus without ileostomy.The primary outcome was the occurrence of postoperative leaks,and the secondary outcomes were presence of postoperative small bowel obstruction(SBO),pouchitis,stricture and fistula complications.A random-effects meta-analysis was used.Results Twenty-three observational studies in the systematic review were included with 658 patients(83%diverted,17%undiverted).Pooled estimates showed no difference in occurrence of leaks in children who underwent J-pouch/IPAA with ileostomy versus without(odds ratio(OR)0.54,95%confidence interval(CI)0.17 to 1.64,I^(2)=16%).There was no difference in the occurrence of SBO,pouchitis or strictures in children who underwent J-pouch/IPAA with ileostomy versus without(SBO:OR 2.27,95%CI 0.52 to 9.92,I^(2)=0%,pouchitis:OR 1.76,95%CI 0.95 to 3.24,I^(2)=0%,strictures:OR 2.72,95%CI 0.44 to 16.69,I^(2)=66%).Conclusion The meta-analysis did not find differences in the occurrence of complications in pediatric patients who underwent the IPAA with ileostomy procedure versus without ileostomy.

The recent manuscript entitled“Relationship between clinical features and intestinal microbiota in Chinese patients with ulcerative colitis”reported a difference in the intestinal microbiota of patients with ulcerative colitis according to the severity of the colitis.The influence of the intestinal microbiota on the development and progress of gastrointestinal disorders is well established.Besides the diversity in the microbiome,the presence of virulence factors and toxins by commensal bacteria may affect an extensive variety of cellular processes,contributing to the induction of a proinflammatory environment.

Emerging evidence has suggested global histone H4 acetylation status plays an important role in neural plasticity. For instance, the imbalance of this epigenetic marker has been hypothesized as a key factor for the development and progression of several neurological diseases. Likewise, astrocytic reactivity-a wellknown process that markedly influences the tissue remodeling after a central nervous system injury-is crucial for tissue remodeling after spinal cord injury（SCI）. However, the linkage between the above-mentioned mechanisms after SCI remains poorly understood. We sought to investigate the relation between both glial fibrillary acidic protein（GFAP） and S100 calcium-binding protein B（S100B）（astrocytic reactivity classical markers） and global histone H4 acetylation levels. Sixty-one male Wistar rats（aged ~3 months） were divided into the following groups： sham; 6 hours post-SCI; 24 hours post-SCI; 48 hours post-SCI; 72 hours post-SCI; and 7 days post-SCI. The results suggested that GFAP, but not S100B was associated with global histone H4 acetylation levels. Moreover, global histone H4 acetylation levels exhibited a complex pattern after SCI, encompassing at least three clearly defined phases（first phase： no changes in the 6, 24 and 48 hours post-SCI groups; second phase： increased levels in the 72 hours post-SCI group; and a third phase： return to levels similar to control in the 7 days post-SCI group）. Overall, these findings suggest global H4 acetylation levels exhibit distinct patterns of expression during the first week post-SCI, which may be associated with GFAP levels in the perilesional tissue. Current data encourage studies using H4 acetylation as a possible biomarker for tissue remodeling after spinal cord injury.
