Consequences of unilateral cryptorchidism on semen and sperm characteristics in West African Dwarf Goats

Objective: To evaluate the influence of unilateral cryptorchidism on semen and sperm characteristics in West African Dwarf (WAD) bucks. Methods: Semen was collected using electroejaculator from five unilaterally cryptorchid (uC) and five normal (non-cryptorchid) WAD bucks and analyzed for gross, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. Results:Gross semen evaluation showed no differences between the groups in semen color, viscosity and pH, whereas the normal bucks yielded semen with significantly higher specific gravity (P=0.0436) and volume (P=0.0388) than the uC group. Following semen microscopic evaluation, the percentage of sperm vitality (live sperm) was not significantly different between both groups. However, uC bucks yielded semen with significantly lower sperm motility (P=0.0387), sperm concentration per mL (P=0.0020) and total sperm count per ejaculate (P=0.0074). The percentage total sperm abnormality was also higher (PuC goats. Abnormalities observed included sperm with cytoplasmic droplets, looped tails, coiled tails and tailless heads. Sperm morphometry showed no differences in the sperm head length and head width between the groups. Biochemical semen evaluation did not reveal any differences between the groups in the concentration of seminal plasma total protein, catalase activity and lipid peroxidation level. Conclusions: unilateral cryptorchidism significantly affected the quantity and quality of semen and spermatozoa in affected WAD bucks. Due to the hereditary attribute of the condition, it is recommended that animals with this condition should not be used in breeding to forestall increasing prevalence of cryptorchidism in goats.

The retinoid receptor-related orphan receptor alpha（RORα） is thought to act as a constitutive activator of transcription by binding to the ROR response element（RORE） of target genes. Several mouse models in which RORα is defective have revealed the decisive roles of RORα on the development, maturation and neuroprotection of various cerebral regions including the cerebellar and somatosensory systems. We have recently shown that RORα is needed for accurate thalamic sensory system organization and somatosensory cortex development. The phenotype of various RORα deficient mice models（staggerer mutant or mouse lacking RORα in specific somatosensory regions） is, in part, reminiscent of what has been described in mice lacking thyroid hormone triiodothyronine（T3）. As in in vitro studies or in other models, our studies strongly suggest that the T3/RORα-pathway, among others, is in part responsible for the staggerer phenotype. We have indeed identified some genes that were both regulated by T3 and RORα and that are known to be implicated in the cerebellar or somatosensory system development. Moreover, several groups have shown that RORα is at the crossroad of many biological processes and pathologies, including psychiatric and degenerative disorders. In particular, defective RORα-signalling has been demonstrated in humans to be associated with the emergence of autistic-like disorders. We believe that determining the appropriate amount of RORα activity could be crucial in detecting and preventing the emergence of specific brain diseases.

Evaluating the Impact of the universal Test and Treat Strategy on the Survival of Patients in the Northwest Region of Cameroon

Introduction: The main outcome of efficiently implemented universal test and treat (uTT) program is improved survival. uTT implementation has been ongoing in Cameroon since 2016 but evaluation data are scarce. This study aims to assess the survival of antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients initiated under uTT in Northwest region of Cameroon. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included HIV-positive patients initiated in 2016 at 27 purposefully selected sites and followed until 2021. Data was anonymously abstracted from ART registers and patients’ charts. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates and Cox model were used to compare the survival of patients initiated under uTT with those initiated otherwise, using stata version 14.0. Results: In total, 2490 HIV-positive patients (median age 42.7 years, 94.7% adults, and 69.0% female) participated in the study. Of 1389 patients with viral load (VL) test results, 55% were initiated on ART late. The VL suppression rate of patients initiated late and those initiated early were similar. During follow-up, 1020 (40.9%) participants censored. The survival curves of patients initiated early on ART and those initiated late were similar during the first 2.5 years of follow-up but significantly (p Conclusions: This study confirms the expected impact of uTT. Programs only need to close existing implementation gaps along the critical pathways (diagnosis and treatment) of uTT, focusing more on males.

Influence of unilateral Cryptorchidism on Libido, Haematology and Serum Reproductive Hormones, Total Protein, Lipid Profile and Oxidative Stress in West African Dwarf Goats

The failure of testicular descent (cryptorchidism) is known to cause abnormal testicular development and function. unilateral cryptorchidism is prevalent in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats particularly in some areas where affected bucks are presumed to have better libido and reproductive efficiency by farmers. Androgens produced by the testes can influence libido and other hormonal and metabolic processes in the body. The study investigated the influence of natural unilateral cryptorchidism on serum reproductive hormones, total protein, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and haematology and libido in WAD bucks. Ten WAD bucks (aged 12 - 14 months) comprising 5 bucks with normal descended testes (N group) and 5 unilaterally-cryptorchid bucks (uC group) were studied. Blood and sera were collected and evaluated for haematology, serum total proteins and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoproteins) concentrations, serum oxidative stress (catalase and lipid peroxidation activity), and serum levels of reproductive hormones (testosterone, FSH and LH). Libido testing of bucks was also performed by randomly isolating and confining each individual male with a doe on standing heat and recording the number of mountings made by the male within a period of 5 minutes as the libido score. The evaluated haematological indices and serum levels of proteins, lipids, oxidative stress indicators and reproductive hormones were not significantly different between the N and uC groups (p > 0.05). Although a higher mean libido score was recorded in N bucks compared to the uC group, this difference was not significant. Whereas no negative effects were observed in the evaluated physiologic indices in uC bucks, these findings do not support the presumption by farmers that uC bucks have better libido than bucks with fully descended testes. Therefore, these animals should not be selected for breeding to avoid increasing the prevalence of unilateral cryptorchidism due to its genetic attribute.

Characterisation and mapping of land subsidence based on geodetic observations in Lagos,Nigeria

The pervasive seasonal flooding,aquifer contamination,and saline water intrusion in parts of Lagos are some of the long-term effects of land subsidence caused by the excessive groundwater exploitation and land reclamation that has been taking place in the *** to monitor the extent and pattern of land deformation will help in many ways to mitigate the effects of flooding and other geohazards associated with land *** this study,we characterised and mapped the land subsidence in the Lagos city based on the analyses of geodetic data,which included Global Positioning Satellite(GPS),Envisat,Sentinel-1,and GRACE *** applied the SBAS technique to the Envisat and Sentinel-1 datasets acquired from 2004-2011 and 2015-2019,respectively,and to perform multi-temporal analyses and produce corresponding subsidence maps over the Lagos *** GRACE data were used to infer the extent and trend of groundwater changes at the GPS *** results indicate that the subsidence is a widespread phenomenon in Lagos city,with subsidence rates varying between-2 mm/year and-87 mm/*** highest subsidence rate was observed around the coastal zones and areas where heavy structures are built on *** the highest rate at present,subsidence has gradually increased in the last 15 *** the development of indiscriminate groundwater exploitation,urbanization,and rapid population growth,the subsidence rate in Lagos city is likely to rise significantly in the coming years,which,in turn,may further escalate the flood rate and other associated geohazards.

Geostatistical evaluation of spatial variability of land subsidence rates in Lagos, Nigeria

Accurate land subsidence prediction is fundamental for effective management of land subsidence and other associated geohazards. Lagos, the most densely populated city in Nigeria, has been adversely affected by widespread land subsidence. Previous studies have largely been restricted to analyzing space geodetic technique data. unfortunately, this technique imposes spatial limitations resulting in incomplete coverage of the study areas due to atmospheric effects, orbital satellite characteristics, or surface characteristics. The application of geostatistics to georeferenced data obtained from space-based measurements can reliably provide complete information on spatial variability. The objective of this study is to provide an overview of current subsidence rates and to assess the spatial variability of land subsidence in the study area by using geostatistics that integrate semivariogram and ordinary kriging. The study area was partitioned into eight subregions;for each subregion, the experimental variogram was determined from the observed data and fitted to the optimal models. Seven subregions were fitted to exponential models and one was fitted to the spherical model. The model semivariograms were used in the kriging analysis to estimate the spatial variability of subsidence rates. The results showed that the nugget-to-sill ratio lies between 44 and 70%, indicating that the spatial variation of subsidence rates at the scale under study is moderately distributed and the mechanism of deformation is similar. The nugget effect of the subsidence rate is between 0.25 and 0.75, indicating that subsidence rates are influenced by various contributions. The predicted spatial variability of subsidence rates by Ordinary Kriging presents reliable values of R-squared(0.32 e0.42) and RMSE(0.21 e0.30).
