Phenotyping Key Fruit Quality Traits in Olive Using RGB Images and Back Propagation Neural Networks

To predict oil and phenol concentrations in olive fruit,the combination of back propagation neural networks(BPNNs)and contact-less plant phenotyping techniques was employed to retrieve RGB image-based digital proxies of oil and phenol *** of cultivars(×3)differing in ripening time were sampled(~10-day interval,×2 years),pictured and analyzed for phenol and oil *** to this,fruit samples were pictured and images were segmented to extract the red(R),green(G),and blue(B)mean pixel values that were rearranged in 35 RGB-based colorimetric *** BPNNs were designed using as input variables(a)the original 35 RGB indexes,(b)the scores of principal components after a principal component analysis(PCA)pre-processing of those indexes,and(c)a reduced number(28)of the RGB indexes achieved after a sparse *** results show that the predictions reached the highest mean R^(2) values ranging from 0.87 to 0.95(oil)and from 0.81 to 0.90(phenols)across the *** addition to the R^(2),other performance metrics were calculated(root mean squared error and mean absolute error)and combined into a general performance indicator(GPI).The resulting rank of the GPI suggests that a BPNN with a specific topology might be designed for cultivars grouped according to their ripening *** present study documented that an RGB-based image phenotyping can effectively predict key quality traits in olive fruit supporting the developing olive sector within a digital agriculture domain.

Use of DREAM to assess relative risks of presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products from a wastewater treatment plant

Concerns related to environmental risks associated with pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have led researchers to seek methods for assessing and monitoring these contaminants in the aquatic environment. Identifying and validating risk assessment tools that can evaluate ecological concerns and risks associated with PPCPs is critical. Herein, the suitability of a dose-related risk and effect assessment model, which estimates predicted environmental concentrations and allowed comparisons with predicted no effect concentrations determined, in combination with in vitro analyses of the whole effluent toxicity, was verified for the characterization of a PPCP hazard. Concentrations of the most utilized PPCPs in Norway were measured in influent and effluent samples and used to parameterize the fate *** than 90% removal was attained for 12 out of 22 detected PPCPs. Removal was not dependent on the class or the concentration of the specific substance and varied between 12% and 100%. The PPCPs detected in the discharged wastewater were utilized to assess individual contributions to the risk of the effluent, and no risk was identified for the targeted 30 PPCP. The simulations provided valuable information regarding the discharge plume distribution over time, which can aid planning of future environmental monitoring *** (using fish liver cells, PLHC-1) were used for assessing overall effluent toxicity, through cell viability, production of reactive oxygen species, and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) *** present study may allow regulators to use risk-based strategies over removal criteria for monitoring studies and confirms the importance to take PPCP contamination into consideration when establishing environmental regulations.

Long-term assessment of collagenase treatment for Dupuytren’s contracture:A 10-year follow-up study

The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC)system was proposed in 1999 with the intent to improve a therapeutic algorithm for the management of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)[1].Both the European and the American Guidelines on the Treatment of HCC have endorsed the BCLC as the standard staging algorithm with prognostic and therapeutic implications[2,3].The BCLC staging system stratifies HCC patients into five stages(0,A,B,C and D).According to the algorithm,liver transplantation(LT)is indicated only in patients in the stages BCLC 0 and A,special situations provided.

Application of machine learning techniques to simulate the evaporative fraction and its relationship with environmental variables in corn crops

Background:The evaporative fraction(EF)represents an important biophysical parameter reflecting the distribution of surface available *** this study,we investigated the daily and seasonal patterns of EF in a multi-year corn cultivation located in southern Italy and evaluated the performance of five machine learning(ML)classes of algorithms:the linear regression(LR),regression tree(RT),support vector machine(SVM),ensembles of tree(ETs)and Gaussian process regression(GPR)to predict the EF at daily time *** adopted methodology consisted of three main steps that include:(i)selection of the EF predictors;(ii)comparison of the different classes of ML;(iii)application,cross-validation of the selected ML algorithms and comparison with the observed ***:Our results indicate that SVM and GPR were the best classes of ML at predicting the EF,with a total of four different algorithms:cubic SVM,medium Gaussian SVM,the Matern 5/2 GPR,and the rational quadratic *** com-parison between observed and predicted EF in all four algorithms,during the training phase,were within the 95%confidence interval:the R^(2)value between observed and predicted EF was 0.76(RMSE 0.05)for the medium Gaussian SVM,0.99(RMSE 0.01)for the rational quadratic GPR,0.94(RMSE 0.02)for the Matern 5/2 GPR,and 0.83(RMSE 0.05)for the cubic SVM *** results were obtained during the testing *** results of the cross-validation analysis indicate that the R^(2)values obtained between all iterations for each of the four adopted ML algorithms were basically constant,confirming the ability of ML as a tool to predict ***:ML algorithms represent a valid alternative able to predict the EF especially when remote sensing data are not available,or the sky conditions are not *** application to different geographical areas,or crops,requires further development of the model based on different data sources of soils,climate,and cropping systems.

Effects of calibration process on the simulation of rear-end conflicts at roundabouts

A methodology for calibrating and validating VISSIM simulation model is presented that allows to replicate the observed vehicles conflicts. A roundabout case study has been selected to test the usefulness of a combined approach of VISSIM simulation package and the surrogate safety assessment model(SSAM) for providing reliable estimates of traffic conflicts. Safety performance has been assessed from the field by video-recording vehicle interactions at the roundabout, and then expressed in terms of time to collision(TTC)*** proposed calibration procedure has been performed by a multistage methodology involving microscopic drivers' car following behavior parameters to enhance the correlation between observed and simulated queue lengths at the roundabout's entries. The calibration procedure is based on a statistical screening of inputs leading to a linear expression relating significant parameters to the queue length. The best estimates of the model's parameters have been determined using a genetic algorithm *** spatial distribution of the rear-end conflicts and the TTC values determined by SSAM have been finally compared with the observed ones to analyze the capability of the model of replicating rear-end *** results suggest to this calibration procedure impacts positively on the estimate of the safety performance measures obtained through the simulation *** the good results in the evaluation of the model's accuracy, the simulation seems to fail in reproducing the traffic phenomena linked to unusual driving behavior, and therefore it is not able to replicate forced drivers' maneuvers that can lead to a conflict situation.
