Thoracolumbar Spine Fracture-Dislocation without Neurological Deficit: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Background: Thoracolumbar spine fracture-dislocations are very unstable and usually secondary to high energy trauma. Due to disruption of the entire vertebrae columns, the absence of neurological deficit is exceptional. Aim: The purpose of this work is to report our experience in the management of this entity in a context of limited resources and to make a review of the literature. Case presentation: A 30-year-old man was admitted with a severe low back pain after a traffic accident. Neurological functions were intact after examination. Radiological assessments revealed a complete L3-L4 fracture-dislocation. The patient underwent an open posterior reduction and internal long segment fixation. The post-operative was marked by a surgical site infection treated with surgical debridement and targeted antibiotic therapy. The neurological functions were preserved. Conclusion: Fracture-dislocations of the thoracolumbar spine are caused by high energy trauma and are remarkably unstable lesions. When they are associated with intact neurorological functions, reduction and stabilization of these fractures are a challenge.

Objective:To determine the antibacterial,antifungal,antiprotozoal,cytotoxic,and phytochemical properties of ethanol extracts of leaves of Voacanga globosa(Blanco) Merr.(***). Methods:The extracts were tested against bacteria and fungus through disc diffusion assay; against protozoa through growth curve determination,antiprotozoal and cytotoxicity assays. Results:The extract revealed antibacterial activities,inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus,Bacillus cereus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Micrococcus luteus,and Salmonella *** assay showed that it inhibited Candida *** antiprotozoal assay against Trichomonas vaginalis and Entamoeba histolytica showed that *** can inhibit the parasites,wherein the action can be comparable to *** the in situ cell death detection *** vaginalis and Entamoeba histolytica exposed to *** leaf extract was observed to fluoresce simultaneously in red and yellow signals signifying apoptotic-like *** phytochemical screening revealed the chemical composition of plant extract containing alkaloids,saponins,2-deoxysugars,and hydrolysabie ***: Thus,thus study provides scientific evidence on the traditional use of *** leaf extract in treating microbial ***,the leaf extract can possibly be used to produce alternative forms of antimicrobials.

The Assu Incised Valley(AIV) is a new example of an incised-valley system located on the Brazilian Equatorial continental *** valley extends over 40 km from the present-day shoreline to the shelf break,in a passive margin setting,on a shallow(70 m),narrow(43 km) and flat(?1) shelf,with mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sedimentation and a low terrigenous sediment *** investigate the morphology of the incised valley and the surrounding shelf area,we analyzed LandSat images and bathymetric,shallow seismic and sedimentological *** results indicate that the AIV is a coastal-plain incised *** incision was mainly forced by the magnitude of the last fall in sea level,which created the specific geometry of valley,atypically widening landward due to lithological and structural *** AIV is a broad N-S-trending valley with a negative relief of approximately 12 m below the mean shelf topography and low-angle valley walls(3°),surrounded by a highly planar *** valley is asymmetric in cross-section and subdivided into three segments along the shelf:the landward segment is wide(up to 8 km),shallow(< 9 m deep),and 25 km long;the middle segment is narrow(2 km wide),only slightly deeper than the inner segment(< 15 m deep) and 10 km long;the outer segment is very narrow(< 1 km),has incised relief up to 30 m deep and is 8 km *** incised valley changes near the shelf break abruptly to a deeper(300 m) and wider submarine canyon(3 km).The three valleysegments are bounded by transfer faults of W-E *** addition,the accommodation-space response to the last deglacial sea-level rise provided a 30 m thick sedimentary fill above a Pleistocene/Holocene regional unconformity and a morphologically controlled stratigraphic *** antecedent valley topography controls the sedimentation and hydrodynamics of the modern ***,the morphology of the AIV is a key example of the control of the bedrock on valley incision and infill respon

Trimethylamine-N-oxide(TMAO)has emerged as a potential biomarker for atherosclerosis and the development of cardiovascular diseases(CVDs).Although several clinical studies have shown striking associations of TMAO levels with atherosclerosis and CVDs,TMAO determinations are not clinical routine *** current methodology relies on isotope-labeled internal standards,which adds to pre-analytical complexity and costs for the quantification of TMAO and its precursors carnitine,betaine or ***,we report a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry based method that is fast(throughput up to 240 samples/day),consumes low sample volumes(e.g.,from a finger prick),and does not require isotope-labeled *** circumvented the analytical problem posed by the presence of endogenous TMAO and its precursors in human plasma by using an artificial plasma matrix for *** cross-validated the results obtained using an artificial matrix with those using mouse plasma matrix and demonstrated that TMAO,carnitine,betaine and choline were accurately quantified in’reallife’human plasma samples from healthy volunteers,obtained either from a finger prick or from venous ***,we assessed the stability of samples stored at-20℃and room *** all metabolites were stable at-20℃,increasing concentrations of choline were determined when stored at room *** method will facilitate the establishment of TMAO as a routine clinical biomarker in hematology in order to assess the risk for CVDs development,or to monitor disease progression and intervention effects.

The paper shows the novel techniques introduction in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean in order to strengthen the surveillance and monitoring of the sedimentation phenomenon in the surface water *** integrated use of the nuclear techniques allows a more complete assessment of water and land *** the development of a regional project,supported by the International Agency of Atomic Energy,Cuba participates as technical leader for 15 countries,to encourage and implement the integrated application of 3 nuclear techniques(Fallout Radionuclides(137Cs,7Be,210pb),Compound Specific Stable Isotopes(fatty acids of the(e)13C)and the Isotopic Hydrology(18O,2H,3H).The methodology used in the last studies referred to RLA 5076 Project is to apply the integration of these three techniques allows evaluating,in the hydraulic facilities and surface water reservoirs,the negative sedimentation impacts in natural and anthropic process as environmental and social *** techniques evaluate the sedimentation process and its synergy,obtaining since the soil quantification in the landscape,definition the soil origin deposited until the dynamic characterization of the water body as soil *** integrated application of these nuclear techniques in the Project RLA-5076 confirms it as a useful tool to support the decisions makers in the definition of the national strategies and programs related to the land and the water resources *** the support of the IAEA projects in the Latin American and Caribbean region,has been evidenced an important increment in the use of these novel techniques.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative *** stress,i.e.,the imbalance between the generation of reactive oxygen species and the antioxidant defense capacity of the body,plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this *** exercise can regulate oxidative *** purpose of this study was to analyze the short-and long-term effects of an aquatic exercise program on oxidative stress levels in patients with Parkinson's *** aquatic exercise program was carried out during 1 month with two sessions per week(1 hour/session).Blood samples were collected at four different time points:pre-intervention,immediately,48 hours,and 30 days after the first session of aquatic exercise *** results revealed that water-based programs modulated antioxidant enzyme activity,increased superoxide dismutase activity,reduced catalase activity,and increased the ratio of superoxide dismutase activity to catalase activity in patients with Parkinson's *** with pre-intervention and 48 hours after the first session of aquatic exercise program,superoxide dismutase activity was higher and catalase activity was lower immediately and 30 days after the first *** results demonstrated that aquatic exercise program could modulate oxidative stress,mainly by the effect of antioxidant enzyme *** results could better help understand the target of oxidative stress in Parkinson's *** study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Centro Universitário Metodista IPA(approval No.1.373.911)on August 9,2019 and registered with REBEC(registration number:RBR-6 NJ4 MK).

Volume and fat infiltration of spino-pelvic musculature in adults with spinal deformity

AIM: To investigate fat infiltration and volume of spino-pelvic muscles in adults spinal deformity(ASD) with magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and 3D ***: Nineteen female ASD patients(mean age 60 ± 13) were included prospectively and consecutively and had T1-weighted Turbo Spin Echo sequence MRIs with Dixon method from the proximal tibia up to T12 vertebra. The Dixon method permitted to evaluate the proportion of fat inside each muscle(fat-water ratio). In order to investigate the accuracy of the Dixon method for estimating fat vs water, the same MRI acquisition was performed on phantoms of four vials composed of different proportion of fat vs water. With Muscl'X software, 3D reconstructions of 17 muscles or group of muscles were obtained identifying the muscle's contour on a limited number of axial images [Deformation of parametric specific objects(DPSO) Method]. Musclar volume(Vmuscle), infiltrated fat volume(Vfat) and percentage of fat infiltration [Pfat, calculated as follow: Pfat = 100 ×(Vfat/Vmuscle)] were characterized by extensor or flexor function respectively for the spine, hip and knee and theirs relationship with demographic data were investigated. RESULTS: Phantom acquisition demonstrated a non linear relation between Dixon fat-water ratio and the real fat-water ratio. In order to correct the Dixon fatwater ratio, the non linear relation was approximated with a polynomial function of degree three using the phantom acquisition. On average, Pfat was 13.3% ± 5.3%. Muscles from the spinal extensor group had a Pfat significantly greater than the other muscles groups, and the largest variability(Pfat = 31.9% ± 13.8%, P < 0.001). Muscles from the hip extensor group ranked 2nd in terms of Pfat(14% ± 8%), and were significantly greater than those of the knee extensor(P = 0.030). Muscles from the knee extensor group demonstrated the least Pfat(12% ± 8%). They were also the only group with a significant correlation between Vmuscle and Pfat(r =-0.
