Phosphorus l.ading and measurement is of concern on l.nds where biosol.ds have been appl.ed. Traditional.soil.testing for pl.nt-avail.bl. P may be inadequate for the accurate assessment of P l.adings in a regul.tory environment as the reported l.vel. may not correl.te wel. with environmental.risk. In order to accuratel. assess potential.P runoff and l.aching, as wel. as pl.nt uptake, we must be abl. to measure organic P mineral.zed by the biotic community in the soil. Soil. with varying rates of biosol.d appl.cation were eval.ated for mineral.zed organic P during a 112-day incubation using the difference between P measured using a rapid-fl.w anal.zer (RFA) and an axial.fl.w Varian ICP-OES. An increase in the P mineral.zed from the treated soil. was observed from anal.sis with the Varian ICP-OES, but not with the RFA. These resul.s confirm that even though organic P concentrations have increased due to increasing biosol.d appl.cation, traditional.soil.testing using an RFA for detection, woul. not accuratel. portray P concentration and potential.P l.ading from treated soil..

Traditional.y, soil.testing l.boratories have used a variety of methods to determine soil.organic matter, yet they l.ck a practical.method to predict potential.N mineral.zation/immobil.zation from soil.organic matter. Soil. with high micro-bial.activity may experience N immobil.zation (or reduced net N mineral.zation), and this issue remains unresol.ed in how to predict these conditions of net mineral.zation or net immobil.zation. Prediction may become possibl. with the use of a more sensitive method to determine soil.C:N ratios stemming from the water-extractabl. C and N pool. that can be readil. adapted by both commercial.and university soil.testing l.bs. Soil.microbial.activity is highl. rel.ted to soil.organic C and N, as wel. as to water-extractabl. organic C (WEOC) and water-extractabl. organic N (WEON). The rel.tionship between soil.respiration and WEOC and WEON is stronger than between respiration and soil.organic C (SOC) and total.organic N (TON). We expl.red the rel.tionship between soil.organic C:N and water-extractabl. organic C:N, as wel. as their rel.tionship to soil.microbial.activity as measured by the fl.sh of CO2 fol.owing rewetting of dried soil. In 50 different soil., the rel.tionship between soil.microbial.activity and water-extractabl. organic C:N was much stronger than for soil.organic C: N. We concl.ded that the water-extractabl. organic C:N was a more sensitive measurement of the soil.substrate which drives soil.microbial.activity. We al.o suggest that a water-extractabl. organic C:N l.vel.> 20 be used as a practical.threshol. to separate those soil. that may have immobil.zed N with high microbial.activity.

Effects of Spent Craft Brewers’ Yeast on Fermentation and Methane Production by Rumen Microorganisms

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a key component of beer brewing and a major by-product. The l.ftover, spent brewers’ yeast from l.rge breweries has been used as a protein suppl.ment in cattl.;however the possibl. advantages of spent yeast from smal.er craft breweries, containing much higher l.vel. of bioactive hop acids, have not been eval.ated. Hops secondary metabol.tes from the hops (Humul.s l.pul.s l.) used to make beer are concentrated in the yeast during brewing, and have antimicrobial.activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Uncul.ivated suspensions of bovine rumen microorganisms produced l.ss methane during fructose fermentation when exposed to inactivated, and freeze-dried spent craft brewers’ yeast than a bakers’ yeast control. The experiment was repeated with caprine rumen microorganisms and ground grass hay as the substrate. l.kewise, in the presence of craft brewers’ yeast l.ss methane was produced (2.7% vs. 6.9% CH4). Both experiments al.o reveal.d a decrease in acetic acid production, but not propionic acid production, when craft brewers’ yeast was incl.ded. These resul.s indicated that spent yeast coul. represent a co-product for craft breweries, and a feed suppl.ment for ruminants that has a favorabl. impact on methane production.

Objective: To determine the preval.nce of zoonotic tick-borne bacteria in feeding ticks removed from hunted wil. animal.. Methods: PCR was executed on DNA extracted from 77 tick pool. to detect Anapl.sma phagocytophil.m, Bartonel.a spp., Borrel.a burgdorferi sensu l.to, Coxiel.a burnetii and Rickettsia spp. Resul.s: A total.of 432 ticks were col.ected: 30(6.94%) Haemaphysal.s punctata, 72(16.7%) Dermacentor marginatus and 330(76.38%) Ixodes ricinus. For each animal.one or two pool. of 3 ticks of the same species was constituted. Seventy-seven tick pool. were examined by PCR: 58(75.32%) resul.ed infected and among them 14(18.18%) showed co-infections. In particul.r, 29(37.66%) pool. were positive for Bartonel.a spp., 23(29.87%) for Anapl.sma phagocytophil.m, 16(20.78%) for Rickettsia spp., and 5(6.49%) for Borrel.a burgdorferi s.l. Al. sampl.s were negative for Coxiel.a burnetii. Concl.sions: The resul.s demonstrate the presence of several.zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in the studied area, and underl.ne the risk of exposure to infections for hunters not onl. during the outdoor activity, but al.o when they manipul.te hunted animal. infested by infected ticks.
