Liver magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)has seen a massive increase in its use over the last decades.Since its first description in the early 1980s,contrast‐enhanced MRI is now the gold standard for the diagnosis of hepatocellular cancer in patients with liver cirrhosis.Techniques like magnetic resonance(MR)elastography and combinations of multiple MR parameters in single scanning protocols are now available and these are opening new possibilities for the assessment of multiple aspects of disease in patients with liver cirrhosis.In this narrative review,we provide an overview of the use of MRI in patients with cirrhosis for the diagnosis of and screening for liver cancer,for the diagnosis of cirrhosis and prediction of long‐term outcomes,and for the evaluation of portal hypertension.With the multitude of techniques now available and the number of cirrhosis aspects that can be assessed by single scans make the study and application of MRI an attractive target in the search for a technique for use in this group of patients that often have to attend for multiple appointments and multiple tests,including invasive investigations.

Himalayan rangelands, the crucial but by and large the neglected ecosystems, are an integral part of mountain farming systems. The present investigation is based on the extensive survey and collection of mid-altitude range plants from Almora and Champawat districts of Kumaun division in the Uttarakhand Himalaya in India, from September 2003 to June 2007. The rangelands studied were oak types, chirpine types, grass types and mixed ones. Some 300 species of grasses, other herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs were found in the mid-altitude rangelands. A sizeable number of species belonged to the family of Poaceae. The grass-dominated rangelands especially harboured a variety of grass species of good fodder value. The diversity of fodder plants is a proportion of the enormous biodiversity occurring in the parts of the Himalaya. A panorama of the biodiversity emerged in this study, which is of both intangible value and direct value for the livestock- and rangeland- dependent mountain communities, suggests a very high scope of the utilization of this natural and uncultivated biodiversity for supporting livestock- based livelihoods of the region. This biodiversity also has enormous bearing on the cultivated area of the region.

Computational interaction analysis of organophosphorus pesticides with different metabolic proteins in humans

Pesticides have the potential to leave harmful effects on humans, animals, other living organisms, and the environment. Several human metabolic proteins inhibited after exposure to organophosphorus pesticides absorbed through the skin, inhalation, eyes and oral mucosa, are most important targets for this interaction study. The crystal structure of five different proteins, PDBIDs： 3LII, 3NXU, 4GTU, 2XJ1 and 1YXA in Homo sapiens （H. sapiens）, interact with organophosphorus pesticides at the molecular level. The 3-D structures were found to be of good quality and validated through PROCHECK, ERRAT and ProSA servers. The results show that the binding energy is maximum -45.21 relative units of cytochrome P450 protein with phosmet pesticide. In terms of H-bonding, methyl parathion and parathion with acetylcholinesterase protein, parathion, methylparathion and phosmet with protein kinase C show the highest interaction. We conclude that these organophosphorus pesticides are more toxic and inhibit enzymatic activity by interrupting the metabolic pathways in H. sapiens.

The nanocrystalline samples of Nd1-xSrxMnO3 （NSMO）（x=0.5, 0.55, 0.60, 0.63） were synthesized by sol-gel based polymeric pre-cursor route. Structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties were studied systematically. It was found that in the composition range （x=0.50-0.63）, Nd1-xSrxMnO3 showed paramagnetic to ferromagnetic （PM-FM） transition in the vicinity of TC～270 K but the FM phase was weakened as the Sr concentration increased. The appearance of weak ferromagnetism was explained in terms of the core-shell model. More-over, for x=0.63 sample, a second transition is observed below TC at T=185 K, which is possibly due to the appearance of A-AFM/ C-AFM or a mixture of both the phases. Resistivity vs temperature （ρ-T） curve showed that the resistivity of all the samples was much larger than the sin-gle crystals of corresponding compositions due to large contribution of the grain boundaries in the present nanocrystalline samples. In all samples, extrinsic kind of MR behavior dominated because of nanocrystalline nature of the samples, which was nearly of the same order （～10%） in all samples. However, the intrinsic kind of MR behavior was also significant in x=0.50 sample, because of the strongest FM feature in this sample.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR） assignments of hydrolyzed products extracted from human blood plasma. The correlations between chemical, functional and structural prop- erties of highly toxic pesticides were investigated using the PreADME analysis. We observed that toxic pesticides possessed higher molecular weight and, more hydrogen bond donors and acceptors when compared with less toxic pesticides. The occurrence of functional groups and structural properties was analyzed using ~H-NMR. The ~H- NMR spectra of the phosphomethoxy class of pesticides were characterized by methyl resonances at 3.7-3.9 ppm （8） with the coupling constants of 11-16 Hz （Je-cns）. In phosphoethoxy pesticides, the methyl resonance was about 1.4 ppm （8） with the coupling constant of 10 Hz （Je-cH2） and the methylene resonances was 4.2-4.4 ppm （8） with the coupling constant of 0.8 Hz （Jp-cH3）, respectively. Our study shows that the values of four parameters such as chemical shift, coupling constant, integration and relaxation time correlated with the concentration of toxic pesticides, and can be used to characterise the proton groups in the molecular structures of toxic pesticides.

Insect feeding deterrent and growth inhibitory activities of scopoletin isolated from Artemisia annua against Spilarctia obliqua （Lepidoptera： Noctuidae）

Artemisia annua （Asteraceae） is well known for its antimalarial activities due to presence of the compound artemisinin. We isolated a methoxy coumarin from the stem part of A. annua and confirmed its identity as scopoletin through mass spectral data. The structure was established from 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR）, 13C-NMR. The compound scopoletin was evaluated for its feeding deterrence and growth inhibitory potential against a noxious lepidopteran insect, Spilartctia obliqua Walker. Scopoletin gave FD50（feeding deterrence of 50%） value of 96.7 μg/g diet when mixed into artificial diet. S. obliqua larvae （12-day-old） exposed to the highest concentration （250μg/g diet） of scopoletin showed 77.1% feeding-deterrence. In a growth inhibitory assay, scopoletin provided 116.9% growth inhibition at the highest dose of 250μg/g diet with a GI50 （growth inhibition of 50%） value of 20.9μg/g diet. Statistical analysis showed a concentrationdependent dose response relationship toward both feeding deterrent and growth inhibitory activities. Artemisinin is found mainly in the leaves of A. annua and not in the stems, which are typically discarded as waste. Therefore identification of scopoletin in stems of A. annua may be important as a source of this material for pest control.

Hippophae rhamnoides L.is a plant of immense ethnopharmacological importance and is a known source for various valuable biochemicals and nutraceuticals.The production of folate,a vitamin involved in several vital functions,in this plant is rather poorly understood.Herein,we investigate the hypothesis that rhizobial bacteria serve the plant in this essential vitamin’s biosynthesis.Bacterial strains of Bacillus,Azorhizobium,Frankia,Paenibacillus,Brevibacillus and Pseudomonas,were isolated from the rhizosphere of the plant.HPLC and LCMS were used to trace the production of intra and extra-cellular folate by representative rhizospheric bacterial strains in vitro.From the seventeen functionally characterized bacterial strains of the plant’s rhizosphere,thirteen produced significant amounts of folate.Azorhizobium BR5401 produced the maximum amount of folic acid(424μg/mL),and Bacillus GY779 was the only strain capable of producing both intracellular and extra-cellular folic acid.The Open Reading Frame coding for dihydroneopterin aldolase,an enzyme involved in folate biosynthesis,was found in one of the representative isolates.Our experimental findings help us to suggest that the folate synthesized by rhizobial bacteria is transported to the plant,highlighting a significant benefit of coexistence.

Assessment of malathion and its effects on leukocytes in human blood samples

In the present paper,we report a reproducible,cost effective,fast response method for detection of malathion and its effects on leukocytes in different human blood groups.Spectroscopic methods（UV-Vis spectrometry）and Fourier transform infrared coupled with solid phase extraction were applied for analyzing malathion content in human blood plasma.The spiking levels of malathion in the range of 0.1-1.7μg/mL were extracted from blood plasma samples using SPE.The present active functional groups（C=0;P-O-C;-OH;P=S）were also characterized.The recovery rate of malathion was 80%±4.5%.The calculated correlation coefficient was 0.9799,indicating the linearity of the results.The limit of detection（LOD）and limit of quantification（LOQ）were（0.1-1.7）μg/mL and（0.3-1.5）μg/mL,respectively.Malathion〈1.0μg/mL showed no significant change while higher levels of malathion exposure（1.5μg/mL and 3.0｜ig/mL）reduced the number of white blood cells.In conclusion,the spectroscopic results may be useful to understand the mechanism of other pesticides such as methyl parathion and parathion.

Phytoremediation is a promising approach for reclamation of salt-affected soil.Phytoextraction is the most commonly used process,which exploits plants to absorb,immobilize,and accumulate salt in their shoots.In this study,halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR)were isolated from the rhizosphere of wild grasses growing naturally in salt-affected areas of Lucknow,Uttar Pradesh(India)and were tested for their efficacies of salt-tolerance and plant growth-promoting(PGP)abilities.Based on 16S rRNA sequences,the most efficient halotolerant isolates possessing PGP traits were identified as Pseudomonas plecoglossicida(KM 233646),Acinetobacter calcoaceticus(KM 233647),Bacillus flexus(KM 233648),and Bacillus safensis(KM 233652).Application of these isolates as bio-inoculants significantly(P<0.05)increased the growth and bacoside A yield of a medicinal plant,Bacopa monnieri(L.)Nash,grown on natural salt-affected soil.The phytoremediation of salt-affected soil was evident by the substantial increase in shoot Na^+:K^+ratio of bio-inoculant-treated plants.When compared to un-inoculated control plants,the soil physico-chemical properties of bio-inoculant-treated plants were improved.The shoot and root biomass(fresh and dry weights),soil enzymes,and soil nutrient parameters showed significant positive correlations with the shoot Na+:K+ratio.Consequently,the halotolerant PGPR screened in this study could be useful for the reclamation of saline soils concomitant with improved plant growth and bacoside A yield.
