Adaptive associations between total body color dimorphism and climatic stress-related traits in a stenothermal circumtropical Drosophila species

Low desiccation resistance of Drosophila ananassae reflects its rarity outside the humid tropics. However, the ability of this sensitive species to evolve under seasonally varying subtropical areas is largely unknown. D. ananassae flies are mostly lighter during the rainy season but darker and lighter flies occur in the autumn season in northern India. We tested the hypothesis whether seasonally varying alternative body color phenotypes of D. ananassae vary in their levels of environmental stress tolerances and mating behavior. Thus, we investigated D. ananassae flies collected during rainy and autumn seasons for changes in body melanization and their genetic basis, desiccation-related traits, cold tolerance and mating propensity. On the basis of genetic crosses, we found total body color dimorphism consistent with a single gene model in both sexes olD. ananassae. A significant increase in the frequency of the dark morph was observed during the drier autumn season, and body color phenotypes showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which suggests climatic selection plays a role. Resistance to desiccation as well as cold stress were two- to three-fold higher in the dark body color strain as compared with the light strain. On the basis of no-choice mating experiments, we observed significantly higher assortative matings between dark morphs under desiccation or cold stress, and between light morphs under hot or higher humidity conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the ecological significance of seasonally varying total body color dimorphism in a tropical species, D. ananassae.

A specific, precise and stability indicating high-performance thin-layer chromatographic method for simultaneous estimation of pantoprazole sodium and itopride hydrochloride in pharmaceutical formulations was developed and validated. The method employed TLC aluminium plates precoated with silica gel 60F254 as the stationary phase. The solvent system consisted of methanol：water：ammonium acetate; 4.0：1.0：0.5 （v/v/v）. This system was found to give compact and dense spots for both itopride hydrochloride （Rf value of 0.55__＋0.02） and pantoprazole sodium （Rf value of 0.85＋0.04）. Densitometric analysis of both drugs was carried out in the reflectance- absorbance mode at 289 nm. The linear regression analysis data for the calibration plots showed a good linear relationship with R2=0.9988___0.0012 in the concentration range of 100--400 ng for pantoprazole sodium. Also, the linear regression analysis data for the calibration plots showed a good linear relationship with R2=0.9990_＋0.0008 in the concentration range of 200-1200 ng for itopride hydrochloride. The method was validated for specificity, precision, robustness and recovery. Statistical analysis proves that the method is repeatable and selective for the estimation of both the said drugs. As the method could effectively separate the drug from its degradation products, it can be employed as a stability indicating method.

Prevalence of excessive internet use and its correlation with associated psychopathology in 11th and 12th grade students

Background Globally, the number of internet users has crossed the three-billion mark, while in India users grew over 17% in the first 6 months of 2015 to 354 million. This study presented a background on internet use and the existence of excessive internet use. Aim To study the extent of internet use in 11th and 12th grade students and the psychopathology, if any, associated with excessive internet use. Methods 426 students who met the inclusion criteria were recruited from 11 th and 12th grade classes from Kendriya Vidyalaya, New Delhi, India, and were assessed by Young's Internet Addiction Test and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. Results Among the 426 students, the mean internet addiction total score was 36.63 (20.78), which indicated mild level of internet addiction. 1.41%(six students) was diagnosed as excessive internet users, while 30.28% and 23.94% were classified as moderate and mild internet users, respectively. The prevalence of internet addiction between gender was 58.22% in males and 41.78% in females. While both positive (prosocial) and negative (hyperactivity, emotional, conduct and peer problem) impacts of internet use were reported by students, in the current study excessive use of internet had a negative impact on students' lives as compared with positive impact, which was statistically significant (p<0.0001). Conclusion Excessive internet use led to abnormal behaviours which cause negative consequences to users. Early diagnosis of risk factors related to excessive internet use, provides education about responsible use and supervision of students by family members.

Nanobiosensors can be effectively used for sensing a wide variety of fertilizers, herbicide, pesticide, insecticide, pathogens, moisture, and soil pH. Taken together, proper and controlled use of nanobiosensor can support sustainable agriculture for enhancing crop productivity.

Introduction: Ectopic pregnancy is an emergency in obstetric wards and a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Incidences of ectopic pregnancy are increasing. Life can be saved with quickness and alertness. Objective: The objective of this study is to find out and evaluate the incidence, clinical presentation, risk factors, and management outcomes of ectopic pregnancies at Sri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences (SGRRIMHS), Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Method: We did a retrospective study of the patients admitted in our hospital (SMI Hospital, SGRRIMHS) and study period was January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2013. Medical records were studied for management, total admission in obstetric wards, total births. Data were collected with the aid of data-entry forms designed for study. There were 4040 ANC patients admitted, out of which 202 cases were ectopic pregnancies. The relevant data collected were analyzed with SPSS for Windows. Result: Ectopic pregnancy constituted 5.0% of all ANC cases admitted in our Hospital. The mean age of patients was 25?±?2 years, 192 of 202 (95.04%) had ruptured pregnancies, and remaining 10 (4.96%) were unruptured. The commonest clinical presentation was abdominal pain (162 of 20280.19%). The commonest (120 of 202, 59.4%) cause was past history of induced abortion. 4 deaths (1.98%) were recorded. Conclusion: Ecotopic pregnancy is common and recognized cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. It is a recognized risk of induced abortion.

焦虑障碍患者很少出现幻视。本病例报告描述了一位男性患者,36岁,患有社交恐惧症和伴惊恐发作的广场恐惧症。该患者幻视明显,令其深受困扰、功能受损。用舍曲林200 mg/d、氯硝西泮1mg/d和普萘洛尔20 mg/d治疗一个月后,患者的焦虑和幻视缓解,能继续工作,恢复社会生活。本报告强调这样一个事实,即幻视并不一定预示着精神病性障碍,很多精神障碍都可能出现视幻觉。如果非精神病性障碍患者出现幻视,那么治疗这些非精神病性障碍通常也能同时缓解相关的幻视,而无需使用抗精神病药物。详细分析此类罕见病例有助于加深对精神病样症状的病理机制的认识。
