Porphyrins are pigments produced in most animal cells during the synthesis of heme,but their importance for external coloration is ***(Order Strigiformes)are among the few animals that accumulate porphyrins in the integument,where it could serve as a means of *** we hypothesized that the porphyrin content of feathers may depend on body condition and breeding site quality in Eurasian eagle owl(Bubo bubo)fledglings and,thus,constitute amplifiers of the quality of the area where they are *** high-performance liquid chromatography,we found 2 porphyrins(protoporphyrin IX and coproporphyrin III)in the body feathers of 19 eagle owl fledglings from 7 breeding *** III,but not protoporphyrin IX feather concentration,was positively associated with the body mass of fledglings and with the quality of the breeding sites where they were reared with respect to food quality and *** coproporphyrin III is produced under oxidative stress,we suggest that good breeding sites may lead to fledglings in good ***,in turn,may make fledglings induce a certain level of free radical and coproporphyrin III production to signal to conspecifics their site-mediated capacity to cope with oxidative *** is the first time that porphyrin content in the integument has been found to be related to individual quality,opening a new scenario for studying evolution of animal coloration.

Finding the balance: Modifying the cholesterol and steroidal glycoalkaloid synthesis pathway in tomato(Solanum lycopersicum L.) for human health, fruit flavor, and plant defense

Unlike most plants, members of the genus Solanum produce cholesterol and use this as a precursor for steroidal glycoalkaloids. The production of the compounds begins as a branch from brassinosteroid biosynthesis, which produces cholesterol that is further modified to produce steroidal glycoalkaloids. During the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, genetic engineering could alter the formation of cholesterol from provitamin D3(7-dehydrocholesterol) and produce vitamin D3. Cholesterol is a precursor for many steroidal glycoalkaloids, including a-tomatine and esculeoside A. Alpha-tomatine is consumed by mammals and it can reduce cholesterol content and improve LDL:HDL ratio. When there is a high a-tomatine content, the fruit will have a bitter flavor, which together with other steroidal glycoalkaloids serving as protective and defensive compounds for tomato against insect, fungal, and bacterial pests. These compounds also affect the rhizosphere bacteria by recruiting beneficial bacteria. One of the steroidal glycoalkaloids, esculeoside A increases while fruit ripening. This review focuses on recent studies that uncovered key reactions of the production of cholesterol and steroidal glycoalkaloids in tomato connecting to human health, fruit flavor, and plant defense and the potential application for tomato crop improvement.

The role of copper element has been an increasingly relevant topic in recent years in the fields of human and animal health, for both the study of new drugs and innovative food and feed supplements. This metal plays an important role in the central nervous system, where it is associated with glutamatergic signaling, and it is widely involved in inflammatory processes. Thus, diseases involving copper(Ⅱ) dyshomeostasis often have neurological symptoms, as exemplified by Alzheimer's and other diseases(such as Parkinson's and Wilson's diseases). Moreover, imbalanced copper ion concentrations have also been associated with diabetes and certain types of cancer, including glioma. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive overview of recent results that show the importance of these metal ions in several pathologies, mainly Alzheimer's disease, through the lens of the development and use of copper chelators as research compounds and potential therapeutics if included in multi-target hybrid drugs. Seeing how copper homeostasis is important for the well-being of animals as well as humans, we shortly describe the state of the art regarding the effects of copper and its chelators in agriculture, livestock rearing, and aquaculture, as ingredients for the formulation of feed supplements as well as to prevent the effects of pollution on animal productions.

Tailoring sub-5 nm Fe-doped CeO2 nanocrystals within confined spaces to boost photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light

This work aimed to study the efficiency of the reverse micelle（RM） preparation route in the syntheses of sub-5 nm Fe-doped CeO2nanocrystals for boosting the visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production from methanol aqueous *** effectiveness of confining precipitation reactions within micellar cages was evaluated through extensive physicochemical cha *** particula r,the nominal composition（0-5 mol% Fe） was preserved as ascertained by ICP-MS analysis,and the absence of separate iron-containing crystalline phases was supported by X-ray *** effective aliovalent doping and modulation of the optical properties were investigated using UV-Vis,Raman,and photoluminescence spectroscopies.2.5 mol% iron was found to be an optimal content to achieve a significant decrease in the band gap,enhance the concentration of oxygen vacancy defects,and increase the charge carrier *** photocatalytic activity of Fe-doped CeO2prepared at different Fe contents with RM preparation was studied and compared with undoped *** optimal iron load was identified to be2.5 mol%,achieving the highest hydrogen production(7566 μmol L-1after 240 min under visible light).Moreover,for comparison,the conventional precipitation（P） method was adopted to prepare iron containing CeO2at the optimal content（2.5 mol% Fe）.The Fe-doped CeO2catalyst prepared by RM showed a significantly higher hydrogen production than that obtained with the sample prepared by the P *** optimal Fe-doped CeO2,prepared by the RM method,was stable for six reuse ***,the role of water in the mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light was studied through the test in the presence of *** obtained results evidenced that hydrogen was produced from the reduction of H+by the electrons promoted in the conduction band,while methanol was preferentially oxidized by the photogenerated positive holes.

Metabolic P systems for biochemical dynamics

Metabolic P systems are a special class of P systems which seem to be adequate for expressing biological phenomena, especially, metabolism and signaling transduction. Basic motivations for their introduction are given and their main aspects are explained by means of an example of biological modeling. A new kind of regulation mechanism is outlined, which could be the basis for a more efficient construction of computational models from experimental data of specific metabolic processes.

We investigate several Hamiltonians for a free particle in a one-dimensional box, in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Specifically, we study this problem with the Neumann boundary condition, the periodic and antiperiodic boundary condition, and some mixed and complex boundary conditions. This is achieved by using an approach recently proposed which expresses the factorization of the partner Hamiltonians in terms of the probability density and current for the ground-state eigenfunction of one of them.
