Dynamics of groundwater recharge near a semi-arid Mediterranean intermittent stream under wet and normal climate conditions

In arid and semi-arid stream-dominated systems,the temporal variability in groundwater recharge has not been widely *** questions remain about the sources of groundwater recharge,its patterns,and the appropriate measuring ***,the main objective of the present study was to assess the changes that might affect the pattern of groundwater recharge under wetter than normal surface water ***,the groundwater depth was monitored near a semi-arid Mediterranean intermittent stream on the piedmont of the High Atlas Mountains in the mountain catchment of the Wadi Rheraya over two hydrological years(2014-2016)with different climate conditions:extreme wet and normal *** recharge was assessed using the episodic master recession *** the two years,the pattern of groundwater recharge was dominated by episodic events and by a high seasonality from wet seasons to dry *** the wet year(2014-2015),the highest groundwater recharge was recorded following an extreme flood,which deeply replenished ***,an exceptional steady state of the groundwater depth was induced by a steady groundwater recharge *** several groundwater recharge events,the assessed recharge had multiple sources,mainly from streamflow at the local scale,but possibly from precipitation,underflow,deep percolation or irrigation return from the upstream part of the *** recharge by streamflow was likely to be short-lived,and lateral recharge was likely to last ***,the episodic master recession algorithm estimated the total groundwater recharge that could encompass various *** the future,more studies and multidisciplinary approaches should be carried out to partition these sources and determine their specific *** semi-arid stream-dominated systems,different groundwater recharge patterns induced by extreme hydrological events(e.g.,wet events)and various potential sources of gro

Induced structural modifications in ZnS nanowires via physical state of catalyst:Highlights of 15R crystal phase

Peculiar and unique growth mechanisms involved in semiconductor nanowires(NWs)pave the way to the achievement of new crystallographic phases and remarkable material properties,and hence,studying polytypism in semiconductor NWs arouses a strong interest for the next generation of electronic and photonic *** this context,the growth of ZnS nanowires has been investigated,as bulk ZnS compound exhibits numerous unstable polytypes at high temperatures,but their stable occurrence is highly anticipated in a nanowire due to its special quasi-dimensional shape and growth *** this work,the idea is to provide a change in the growth mechanism via the physical state of catalyst droplet(liquid or solid)and hence,study the induced structural modifications in ZnS *** HRTEM images of VLS(via liquid alloyed catalyst)grown ZnS NWs show periodic stacking faults,which is precisely identified as a stacking sequence of cubic or hexagonal individual planes leading to an astonishing 15R crystal *** crystallographic phase is observed for the first time in ***,NWs grown with VSS(via solid catalyst)show crystal polytypes of zinc blende and *** calculate and discuss the role of cohesive energies in the formation of such ZnS ***,we present the selection rules for the crystallization of such 15R structure in NWs and discuss the involved VLS and VSS growth mechanisms leading to the formation of different crystal phases.

In a country such as China, with abundant consumer products and the inevitability of product defects, claims for punitive damages are sure to arise under Article 47 of the new Chinese Tort Law. Article 47 provides that ＂（w）hereany producer or seller knowingly produces or sells defective products, causing death or serious damage to the health of others, the injured party may request appropriate punitive damages.＂ As Chinese jurists and scholars interpret Article 47, they may wish to consider whether lessons can be drawn from the American experience. During the past two decades, few areas of American law have changed more radically than the law on punitive damages. While there were once few restraints on the ability of a judge or jury to impose punitive damages in a case involving egregious conduct, today there are a host of limitations embodied in American state and federal law. In many American states, statutes or judicial decisions restrict the ability of a court to award punitive damages by narrowly defining the types of conduct that will justify a punitive award, raising the standard of proof capping the amount of punitive damages, requiring a portion of a punitive award to be forfeited to the state, or limiting vicarious liability for punitive damages. In addition, under federal constitutional law, the principle of due process limits the imposition of punitive damages by scrutinizing the ratio between compensatory and punitive damages and prohibiting an award to be based on harm to persons other than the plaintiff. An examination of these developments from a comparative law perspective may prove useful to the implementation of Article 47.

Swarm intelligence in a bat algorithm(BA)provides social *** operations for reproducing individuals in a genetic algorithm(GA)offer global search ability in solving complex optimization *** integration provides an opportunity for improved search ***,existing studies adopt only one genetic operation of GA,or design hybrid algorithms that divide the overall population into multiple subpopulations that evolve in parallel with limited interactions *** from them,this work proposes an improved self-adaptive bat algorithm with genetic operations(SBAGO)where GA and BA are combined in a highly integrated ***,SBAGO performs their genetic operations of GA on previous search information of BA solutions to produce new exemplars that are of high-diversity and *** by these exemplars,SBAGO improves both BA’s efficiency and global search *** evaluate this approach by using 29 widely-adopted problems from four test *** is also evaluated by a real-life optimization problem in mobile edge computing *** results show that SBAGO outperforms its widely-used and recently proposed peers in terms of effectiveness,search accuracy,local optima avoidance,and robustness.

Weighted residual method for diffraction of plane P-waves in a 2-D elastic half-spaceⅢ:on an almost circular arbitrary-shaped alluvial valley

Scattering and diffraction of elastic in-plane P- and SV-waves by a surface topography such as an elastic canyon at the surface of a half-space is a classical problem which has been studied by earthquake engineers and strong motion seismologists for over forty years. The case of out-of- plane SH-waves on the same elastic canyon that is semicircular in shape on the half-space surface is the first such problem that was solved by analytic closed-form solutions over forty years ago by Trifunac. The corresponding case of in-plane P- and SV- waves on the same circular canyon is a much more complicated problem because the in-plane P- and SV- scattered waves have different wave speeds and together they must have zero normal and shear stresses at the half-space surface. It is not until recently in 2014 that analytic solution for such problem is found by Lee and Liu. This paper uses their technique of defining these stress-free scattered waves, which Brandow and Lee previously used to solve the problem of the scattering and diffraction of these in-plane waves on an almost-circular surface canyon that is arbitrary in shape, to the study of the scattering and diffraction of these in-plane waves on an almost circular arbitrary-shaped alluvial valley.

Effects of Chemical Treatment on the Physical Properties of Typha

Plant-based concretes are produced from plant aggregates and a *** fibers are mainly composed of saccharides(sugars)and these sugars can decrease the concentration of Ca2+ions in the cement pore solution and delay the formation of hydration *** improve the interfacial bond between fibers and matrix a chemical treatment is widely *** study investigates the effect of sodium hydroxide treatment on physical and hygroscopic properties of Typha *** particular,a 5%sodium hydroxide solution is used to treat these aggregates and their bulk and absolute densities,porosity,water content and water absorption are evaluated *** indicate that bulk and absolute densities increase after treatment from 56.44 kg/m^(3) to 122.57 kg/m^(3) and 541.93 kg/m^(3) to 555.17 kg/m^(3),*** treatment reduces porosity of Typha from 89.58%to 77.92%and decreases water content from 1.4%to 1%.The treatment with sodium hydroxide reduces substantially the water absorption of the aggregates.

Chronic hepatitis B(CHB)-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a major health problem in AsianPacific *** therapy reduces,but does not eliminate the risk of *** would be a heavy financial burden in most low and middle economic countries if all CHB patients received antiviral therapy and HCC ***,there is a need for accurate risk prediction to assist prognostication,decisions on the need for antiviral therapy and HCC surveillance.A few wellestablished risk factors for HCC,namely advanced age,male gender,high viral load,cirrhosis etc.,are the core components of three HCC risk scores:CU-HCC,GAGHCC and REACH-B *** 3 scores were confirmed to be accurate in predicting HCC up to 10 years in treatment-na ve *** validity and applicability have recently been demonstrated in a large cohort of entecavir treatment patients.A decrease in risk scores after antiviral therapy translates to a lower risk of *** findings support the application of HCC risk scores in all CHB *** levels of care and different intensities of HCC surveillance should be offered according to the risk profile of *** at risk of HCC should undergo regular HCC surveillance,even when they are receiving antiviral treatment.

Antiviral polysaccharides isolated from Hong Kong brown seaweed Hydroclathrus clathratus

Two relatively pure polysaccharides H3-a1 and H3-b1 had been isolated from the brown seaweed Hy-droclathrus clathratus. They were characterized by HPLC, ultraviolet scanning, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and shown to be two different sulfated polysaccharides with different monosaccharide content, but both with high relative molecular mass. They contained some proteins and uronic acid respectively. The sulfate content and bioactivity of these polysaccha-rides varied during purification. The fractions derived from the hot water extract also exhibited low anticoagulant effect. This is the first time that the antiherpetic and anticoagulant activities were evaluated for the polysaccharides from the Hong Kong brown seaweed Hydroclathrus clathratus.
