this first essay is about a pending marriage between biology and some of the technologies of engineering. It is a story of a long-standing flirtation that has been consummated a number of times, but never properly solemnised, despite repeated attempts, and no one is quite sure how many of the offspring, if any, have been viable. Whether the union will be blessed in the near future is anyone’s guess. In the hope of helping the marriage on its way, I start with four lucky things the bride has to wear at the wedding for the marriage to succeed, at least in one of the more recent Western traditions.

Accurate high-resolution maps of oil palm plantations underpin effective management of environmental and socio-economic impacts at global,regional,and national ***,young industrial and highly irregular small-holder plantations are mostly unmapped and not included in official fAO *** issue is addressed here by discriminating global oil palm plantation in 2020 into four subclasses:Industrial Mature Oil Palm(IMOP);Industrial Young Oil Palm(IYOP);smallholder Mature Oil Palm(sMOP);and smallholder Young Oil Palm(sYOP).Data,resolved to 4.77 m,from Planet&NICfI,sentinel-1/2,were combined with other layers using the image-oriented classification and regression tree(CARt)algorithm which performed best in classification *** show that sMOP dominates distributional extent,but it was also the most accurately mapped subclass typically found at 500–1000 m *** had the most extensive altitude range of 500–1300 m,while IYOP and sYOP were found at similar altitudes of 500–800 m and 500–900 m *** developments in south East Asia show oil palm plantations expanding into new areas with a slope of 24 *** provide data to support sustainable Development Goal by assisting future oil palm-related development planning and monitoring in the world’s major oil palm-growing countries.

Knowledge of necrophagous insects' developmental data is necessary for the forensic entomologist to estimate a reliable minimum postmortem interval (PMImin).Among the most represented necrophagous species,Lucilia sericata (Diptera,Calliphoridae) is particularly *** is regularly identified in samples,with a predominance in summer,and is commonly used by analysts of our entomology department (Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale) to estimate the PMImin with the accumulated degree days (ADD) *** method requires the mathematical lower thermal threshold to be *** value dictates the quality of the applied ADD method but cannot be considered as fixed,especially when insect development occurs at temperatures close to the biological *** such conditions,it is necessary to study the influence of such temperatures on development rate,as well as the consequences of estimating the period of first oviposition on cadavers,when using the ADD *** replicate rearings were conducted at six different temperatures: 30 ℃,24 ℃,18 ℃,15 ℃,12 ℃ and 10 ℃.time of development and time of emergence were *** effect of low temperature on the development cycle and the reliability of the ADD method under this entire temperature spectrum were studied using different linear regression *** durations of total insect time development and experimental rearing duration were then compared.A global linear model cannot be used on the whole temperature spectrum experienced by *** without resulting in an overestimation at some *** found a combination of two linear regression models to be suitable for the estimation of the total development time,depending on the temperature experienced by *** approach allowed us to obtain a variation lower than 2% at 12 ℃ and 10 ℃ between the calculated duration and experimental duration of *** comparison,the results obtained with a global model show

Picosecond pulse radiolysis of neat tetrahydrofuran (tHf) shows a fast decay of the solvated electron within *** decay of the solvated electron observed at 790nm is because of spur reaction.A numerical simulation using time dependent smoluchowski equation containing a sink term with a distance dependent reaction rate is used to fit the pulse-probe data and shows that the geminate reaction can proceed at long distance in this low polar solvent.
