ong>Background:ong> Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common finding on the surgical ward, more so in the intensive care unit. Diseases affecting the major organ systems of the body and higher grades of surgery are common risk factors for MA. It is associated with poor treatment outcome. Aim: To determine the risk factors and clinical correlates of metabolic acidosis and assess its relationship with treatment outcome. Methodology: A retrospective study at the “Tristate Heart and vascular Center” in Ilishan-Remo South west Nigeria, on patients that had cardiac and vascular surgeries from January 2015 to December 2019. Three hundred and forty two participants took part in the study. The demographic, clinical and laboratory findings were entered. Statistical analysis was with Student’s t-test and Chi square. Peritoneal Tuberculosis: Looking beyond the Typical Pathology

Peritoneal tuberculosis (TbP), an uncommon peritoneal infection, is commonly diagnosed in immigrants from developing countries and represents a substantial proportion of cases of extra pulmonary tuberculosis. The variability in patient presentation and the indolent nature of the infection, combined with limited diagnostic strategies available for TbP, often results in delayed diagnosis. Case: Described herein is the case of a 39 years old male recent immigrant from Mali (West Africa), with no significant medical history that presented to hospital with a four-day history of abdominal pain and swelling. Examination was significant for distended abdomen and shifting dullness. No signs and symptoms suggested pulmonary infection, however, QuantiFERoN-TB Gold and purified protein derivative (PPD) test were positive suggesting latent Tb infection. In the absence of pulmonary tuberculosis, a diagnosis of TbP should be established histologically. Laparoscopic biopsy showed granuloma but the typical caseating granuloma of TbP was not seen. Nonetheless, based on the extent of the clinical and laboratory findings, the patient was diagnosed with TbP and anti Tb treatment ensued with successful outcome. Conclusion: The lack of caseating granulomas in the pathology should not rule out a diagnosis of TbP, especially in cases where accompanying evidence suggests some form of Tuberculosis.

Chest Radiography and Echocardiography Predictors of Early Hemodialysis Catheter Dysfunction

Purpose: To determine whether radiographic heart morphology and echocardiography findings were associated with early central venous catheter (CVC) failure in hemodialysis patients. Materials & Methods: All hemodialysis catheter insertions between 1996-2007 were captured in a combined nephrology radiology database. Factors were identified that may be associated with early catheter failure. Factors examined included: echocardiography findings, radiographic evidence of flattened heart border, boot-shaped heart and left ventricular hypertrophy as well as patient comorbidities and peri-procedural characteristics. Results: of the 132 CVC failures in 132 patients, 67 (50.8%) occurred within 30 days of insertion. Early CVC failure was more likely to occur in patients who had insertions from the left side (?2, p = 0.020) and with catheter tip position outside the cavoatrial junction (?2, p = 0.040). CVC failure rates also differed by year of placement (?2, p of left ventricular hypertrophy (?2, p = 0.030), left systolic dysfunction (?2, p = 0.030), and hypokinetic right wall mechanics (?2, p onclusion: Radiographic findings of left ventricular hypertrophy and echocardiography findings of left systolic dysfunction were found to be associated with early failure.

optimizing a Single-Absorption-Layer Thin-Film Solar Cell1 Model to Achieve 31% Efficiency

This research builds upon the authors’ previous work that introduced and modeled a novel Gallium-Arsenide, Emitterless, Back-surface Alternating Contact (GaAs-EBAC) thin-film solar cell to achieve >30% power conversion efficiency. Key design parameters are optimized under an Air-Mass (AM) 1.5 spectrum to improve performance and approach the 33.5% theoretical efficiency limit. A second optimization is performed under an AM0 spectrum to examine the cell’s potential for space applications. This research demonstrates the feasibility and potential of a new thin-film solar cell design for terrestrial and space applications. Results suggest that the straight-forward design may be an inexpensive alternative to multi-junction solar cells.

Effect of Mineral Acids on Rooting Response of Aging Mung Bean （Phaseolus aureus Roxb,） Cuttings via Indole Acetic Acid Level

The influence of nitric acid （HNo3） as a strong mineral acid on rooting response of fresh mad aging mung bean cuttings has been studied on the level of Indole-3-Acetic Acid （IAA）. The data revealed significant increase in rooting response of fresh cuttings treated with （0.0001% and 0.1%） concentrations of HNo3 solution, significant increase in rooting response of aged cuttings （for 3 days in d/H20） with （0.0001% and 0.01%） concentration of HNo3 solution and highly significant increase in rooting response of aged cuttings （for 3 days in HNo3 solution） with （0.0001%） concentration, while highly concentration （0.5%） revealed highly significant decrease in rooting response compared to control （d/H20）. Quantitative estimation oflAA by spectrophotometric method as indicators for oxidative processes that occurrence during aging phenomenon verified a highly significant increase of IAA content in hypocotyles of fresh and aged cuttings in optimal concentration of HNo3.

Assessment of a Non-optical Water Quality Property Using Space-Based Imagery in Egyptian Coastal Lake

Progressively anthropogenic intrusion and increasing water demand necessitate frequent water quality monitoring for sustainability management. Unlike laborious, time consuming field-based measurements, remote sensing-based water quality retrieval proved promising to overcome difficulties with temporal and spatial coverage. However, remotely estimated water quality parameters are mostly related to visibility characteristic and optically active property of water. This study presents results of an investigated approach to derive oxygen-related water quality parameter, namely Dissolved oxygen (Do), in a shallow inland water body from satellite imagery. The approach deduces Do levels based on interrelated optical properties that dictate oxygen consumption and release in waters. Comparative analysis of multiple regression algorithms was carried out, using various combinations of parameters;namely, Turbidity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chlorophyll-a, and Temperature. To cover the wide range of conditions that is experienced by Edku coastal lake, ground truth measurements covering the four seasons were used with corresponding satellite imageries. While results show successful statistically significant correlation in certain combinations considered, yet optimal results were concluded with Turbidity and natural logarithm of temperature. The algorithm model was developed with summer and fall data (R2 0.79), then validated with winter and spring data (R2 0.67). Retrieved Do concentrations highlighted the variability in pollution degree and zonation nature within that coastal lake, as related to boundary interactions and irregularity in flow dynamics within. The approach presented in this study encourages expanded applications with space-based earth observation products for exploring non-detectable water quality parameters that are interlinked with optically active properties in water.
