A deep feed-forward neural network for damage detection in functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite plates using modal kinetic energy

This paper proposes a new Deep Feed-forward Neural Network(DFNN)approach for damage detection in functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite(FG-CntRC)*** the proposed approach,the DFNN model is developed based on a data set containing 20000 samples of damage scenarios,obtained via finite element(FE)simulation,of the FG-CntRC *** elemental modal kinetic energy(MKE)values,calculated from natural frequencies and translational nodal displacements of the structures,are utilized as input of the DFNN model while the damage locations and corresponding severities are considered as *** state-of-the art Exponential Linear Units(ELU)activation function and the Adamax algorithm are employed to train the DFNN ***,in order to enhance the performance of the DFNN model,the mini-batch and early-stopping techniques are applied to the training process.A trial-and-error procedure is implemented to determine suitable parameters of the network such as the number of hidden layers and the number of neurons in each *** accuracy and capability of the proposed DFNN model are illustrated through two distinct configurations of the Cnt-fibers constituting the FG-CntRC plates including uniform distribution(UD)and functionally graded-V distribution(FG-VD).Furthermore,the performance and stability of the DFNN model with the consideration of noise effects on the input data are also *** results indicate that the proposed DFNN model is able to give sufficiently accurate damage detection outcomes for the FG-CntRC plates for both cases of noise-free and noise-influenced data.

Edge effect of optical surfacing process with different data extension algorithms

This study presents a strategy which integrates extra polishing path （EPP） and error map extension to weaken the edge effect in the ultraprecise optical surfacing process. Different data extension algorithms were pre- sented and analyzed. The neighbor-hood average can be selected as the frequently-used method, as it has not bad precision and time-saving performance for most surface forms through the simulation results and practical experi- ment. The final error map was obtained, its peak-to-valley （PV） was 0.2732 and root mean square （RMS） was 0.0282 （2 = 632.8nm）. The edge effect was weakened and suppressed well through the experiment.

Profile and roughness of electrorheological finishing optical surfaces

This paper focuses on the process of electrorheological （ER） finishing optical surfaces. Experiments on K9 mirrors were conducted. In one experiment, the operating distance was varied over 0.5-0.8 mm with the voltage at 2000 V. The maximum peak-to-valley （PV） reduction was obtained at the distance of 0.5 ram, where the PV value was reduced from 58.71 to 25.03nm. In another experiment, the voltage was varied over 1500- 3000V with operating distance at 0.5mm. The final surface roughness （Ra） achieved was as low as 2.5 rim. A higher voltage produced a higher relative reduction of the Ra. These experimental results validated the process.

Populations in Southern China (Bai-yue) and Borneo (Bidayuh) with high incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) share similar mitochondrial DNA signatures, supporting the hypothesis that these two populations may share the same genetic predisposition for NPC, which may have first appeared in a common ancestral reference population before the sea levels rose after the last ice age.

Life skill-based training is essential for intellectual disabled individuals to regain autonomy and social *** reality(VR)could deliver a nascent application that is more engaging and *** objective of this study was to evaluate the training effects of the VR-based multiple life skill training program on life skill perfor-mance,self-efficacy,memory,cognitive and behavioral functions via a multicenter randomized controlled trial.A total of 145 intellectual disabled participants were recruited for a randomized controlled trial with three in-tervention arms:VR(n=42);traditional(n=53);and control(n=50).The life skill tasks for the interventions included 1)grocery shopping,2)cooking,and 3)kitchen *** measures were performance scores for the three tasks,self-efficacy scale,digit span score,and Frontal Assessment Battery score,graded by blinded ***-after effects of each group were evaluated using separated Wilcoxon Signed-rank *** sig-nificantly improved cooking,cleaning performance,and memory span,while traditional training significantly improved shopping,cooking,and cleaning *** generalized estimating equation evaluated effects between groups adjusted for age,gender and intelligence quotient(IQ).VR had significantly larger improvement effects in cooking and cleaning than the control group and memory span compared to traditional training and controls *** appeared to be a significant confounder on the training *** work may consider developing artificial intelligence to customize programs depending on IQ level.

Understanding the importance of autophagy in human diseases using Drosophila

Autophagy is a lysosome-dependent intracellular degradation pathway that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various human diseases, either positively or negatively impacting disease outcomes depending on the specific context. The majority of medical conditions including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, infections and immune system disorders and inflammatory bowel disease could probably benefit from therapeutic modulation of the autophagy machinery. Drosophila represents an excellent model animal to study disease mechanisms thanks to its sophisticated genetic toolkit, and the conservation of human disease genes and autophagic processes. Here, we provide an overview of the various autophagy pathways observed both in flies and human cells(macroautophagy, microautophagy and chaperone-mediated autophagy), and discuss Drosophila models of the above-mentioned diseases where fly research has already helped to understand how defects in autophagy genes and pathways contribute to the relevant pathomechanisms.

Hydrogeological Characteristics of a Karst Mountainous Catchment in the Northwest of Vietnam

This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the hydrogeological characteristics of a karst mountainous catchment, the Suoi Muoi River catchment, in the northwest of Vietnam. The catchment is located at 600–700 m a.s.l. and covers an area of 284 km. Exposed limestone occupies 32% of the total catchment area. Various types of assessments have been carried out, including geological and hydrogeological field surveys, cave surveys, dye-tracer tests, meteorological and surface water monitoring. Geological studies and cave surveys have identified the most important active cave/conduit systems within the catchment. Although these data are essential, they are insufficient to make a comprehensive appraisal of the hydrologic nature of the catchment under interest. An attempt was made to calculate a global water balance of the catchment, based on short-term (15 months) meteorological and streamflow records. The results show that, despite the existence of a number of substantial cavern conduit systems, the groundwater system of the catchment is governed by the fracture/fissure matrix. The cavern conduit systems only collect groundwater from the adjacent fracture matrix and/or connect topographically isolated surface watercourses. The groundwater storage of the cavern conduit systems appears to be regionally insignificant in comparison with the governed fracture matrix groundwater system.

Test and prediction of chloride diffusion in recycled aggregate concrete

Recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) specimens with different recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratios by mass(R) are fully immersed in a 10% chloride solution for 235 days. Both free chloride concentration(Cf) and total chloride concentration(Ct) are then measured employing a rapid chloride test(RCT) system. The Fick's second diffusion law is verified by the test data and used to predict chloride concentration distribution at different immersion periods. Additionally, pore structures of the new and old mortar in RAC are tested by mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP). It is found that binding chloride concentration(Cb) linearly increases with Cf. In natural aggregate concrete(NAC), Cf is obviously smaller than that in the RAC in the same testing environment and this is different from the test results of Ct and Cb. Furthermore, the effects of R on the chloride concentration of RAC become severe for specimens subjected to long immersion periods, which can be explained in terms of the pore structures of the new mortar and old adhesive mortar in RAC.
