Pedestrian Countdown Signals: What Impact on Safe Crossing?

This paper examines safety impacts of a Pedestrian Countdown Signal (PCS) installed on a busy downtown intersection in San Diego, California. Crossing episodes of over 5000 pedestrians were videotaped and analyzed using multivariate statistical methods. Details of timing of pedestrian crossing as well as information about vehicular traffic and signal timing were carefully coded for each pedestrian. Significant safety benefits of the PCS system were found on the long crossings over a street with high vehicular volumes: most pedestrians were able to effectively increase their walking speed to complete their crossing without committing the exit violation—even if they have already committed the entry violation. However, on the short crossing with light vehicular traffic, PCS was generally ineffective in preventing the entry violations from becoming exit violations. Over there, many pedestrians felt safe enough to walk over a short crossing with no apparent vehicular traffic in sight instead of waiting for a green signal. The length of crossing and volume of interfering vehicular traffic were consistently found the most significant variables affecting the crossing violation rates of different categories of pedestrians. Crossing violation rates were the highest for runners, bicyclists and older males. Crossing violation characteristics were found to be consistent over time.

Conclusive Growth of CdTe Nanorods by Solvothermal Decomposition Using Single Source Precursors

CdTe nanorods are synthesized by solvothermal decomposition, using single source molecular precursors (SSMP) cadmium (II), complex of bis-(aminopropyl telluride) (SSMP-I) and cadmium (II) bis-(isopropyl telluro) propane (SSMP-II) and quinoline as solvent at relatively low temperature (210°C). As synthesized nanomaterials are structurally characterized by XRD and SEM, SEM micrographs revealed formation of rod shapes structures whose dimensions change with the source precursor molecule. The average crystallite size estimated from XRD data is 29.78 and 28.94 nm respectively using Precursors I and II. The average size of nanorods is 1.237 μm and 0.15μm respectively, estimated from SEM micrographs. These are much larger than the average crystallite size estimated from XRD data. This is attributed to the agglomeration of nanocrystallites as quinoline is not a good capping agent.

目的：研究5种正畸临床操作[分牙、放置带环、初始弓丝扎入（0016镍钛）、T形曲加力、颌问牵引]所引起疼痛的峰值强度、峰值出现时间、是否需要止痛药以及对日常生活的影响。材料和方法：研究共纳入100名（男52．女48）进行正畸固定矫治的患者。分为分牙，放置带环、初始镍钛丝、T形曲加力、颌问牵引5组。要求每位患者填写调查问卷．内容包括：疼痛峰值出现时间、疼痛峰值强度、是否需要镇痛药和疼痛对日常生活的影响。结果：分牙及初始镍钛丝组对镇痛药需求最高。颌问牵引和初始镍钛丝组疼痛对生活影响最大．但差异无统计学意义。放置带环组分别与T形曲加力组、颌问牵引组的疼痛峰值强度差异有统计学意义。疼痛峰值出现时间分牙组为第24小时．其余组大部分为第6小时．但差异无统计学意义。结论：不同正畸操作所引起的疼痛强度不同。T形曲加力和颌间牵引比放置带环引起的疼痛更强烈。

Recent advancements in perovskites’ application as a solar energy harvester have been astonishing. The power conversion efficiency(PCE) of perovskite solar cells(PSCs) is currently reaching parity(>25 percent), an accomplishment attained over past decades. PSCs are seen as perovskites sandwiched between an electron transporting material(ETM) and a hole transporting material(HTM). As a primary component of PSCs, HTM has been shown to have a considerable effect on solar energy harvesting, carrier extraction and transport, crystallization of perovskite, stability, and price. In PSCs, it is still necessary to use a *** perovskites are capable of conducting holes, they are present in trace amounts, necessitating the use of an HTM layer for efficient charge extraction. In this review, we provide an understanding of the significant forms of HTM accessible(inorganic, polymeric and small molecule-based HTMs), to motivate further research and development of such materials. The identification of additional criteria suggests a significant challenge to high stability and affordability in PSC.

Faster and predictable osseointegration is crucial for the success of dental implants, especially in patients with compromised local or systemic conditions. Despite various surface modifications on the commercially available Titanium (Ti) dental implants, the bioactivity of Ti is still low. Thus, to achieve both biological and therapeutic activity on titanium surfaces, surface modification techniques such as titanium nanotubes have been studied as nanotube surfaces can hold therapeutic drugs and molecules. The main aim of the present research work is to study the early osseointegration around the novel Simvastatin drug eluting nanotubular dental implant. In the present research, the titanium nanotubes were fabricated on the screw-shaped dental implant surface and the Simvastatin drug was loaded into the nanotubes using the ultrasonication dip method. In vitro and In vivo studies were carried out on the modified dental implants. In vitro cell culture study reported enhanced osteogenic activity on the drug-loaded nanotube surface implants. The in vivo animal studies were evaluated by micro-CT, histopathology, and reverse torque removal analysis methods. The test results showed faster osseointegration with the strong interface on the Simvastatin drug-loaded implant surface at 4 weeks of healing as compared to the control implants.
