Multipotent stromal cells stimulate liver regeneration by influencing the macrophage polarization in rat

AIM To investigate the influence of the umbilical cordderived multipotent stromal cells(MSCs) on recovery of the liver after the subtotal resection, that is, removal of 80% of the organ mass, a renowned model of the small-for-size liver remnant syndrome. METHODS The MSCs were obtained from the intervascular tissue of umbilical cords, dissected from rat fetuses, by the explant culture technique. The vital labeling of MSCs with РКН26 was carried out on the 3 rd passage. The subtotal resection was performed on male Sprague-Dawley rats. The experimental group animals received a transplant 106 MSCs infused into the spleen. Hepatocyte proliferation was assessed by counting of either mitotic figures or Ki67-positive cells in microscopic images. MSC differentiation was assessed with antibodies to hepatocyte-specific marker cytokeratin 18(CK18), cholangiocyte-specific protein CK19, smooth muscle cell-specific protein α-SMA, the endothelial cell marker CD31, or the active fibroblast marker FAPα. Total macrophages of the liver were selectively stained in cryosections incubated with antiCD68 antibodies(1:100, Abcam), while the M2 a and M2 c macrophage populations were selectively stained with anti-CD206 antibodies. Expression of interleukin and growth factor genes was evaluated with *** Intrasplenic allogeneic transplantation of the umbilical cord-derived multipotent stromal cells stimulates reparative processes within the residual liver tissue after subtotal resection(removal of 80% of the organ mass), as indicated by increased rates of hepatocyte proliferation and accelerated organ mass recovery. These effects may result from paracrine influence of the transplanted cells on the resident macrophage population of the liver. The transplantation favors polarization of macrophages to M2 phenotype(the M2-polarized macrophages specifically express CD206; they are known to suppress inflammation and support tissue repair). Nano-mechanisms of crystal lattice deformation on the interface of dissimilar materials (Cu-Nb), joined by vacuum rolling in solid phase under high temperature (950℃) were studied by means of high resolution electron microscopy. Input of carriers of rotation modes—nano-dipoles of partial disclinations and nano-twist disclinations in the form of double spirals in deformation mechanisms were analyzed. The role of these mechanisms in decrease of shear stability of the interface areas and in production of high-quality rolled metal is discussed.

Binuclear and hexanuclear titanium complexes stabilized by tetradentate [OOOO]^(4–)-type ligand were active in ethylene polymerization in the presence of Et2 AlCl/Bu2 Mg binary co-catalyst, giving high molecular weight polyethylene. The binuclear complex showed significantly higher catalytic activity and thermal stability in comparison to mononuclear analogue. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) samples were processed by a solid-state uniaxial deformation into high-strength(up to 2.5 GPa) and highmodulus(over 100 GPa) oriented film tapes, which indirectly indicates a low degree of entanglements between the macromolecular chains.

Synthesis of vIB Group Metals Silicides Dispersed Powders by Electrolysis of Halide-Oxide Melts

Study of electrochemical behavior of chromium （molybdenum, tungsten） and silicon containing melts allowed defining conditions for synthesis of silicides of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten in the form of fine powders by electrolysis of halide-oxide melts. Sequence of stages of electrosynthesis of silicides of molybdenum and tungsten was found as follows： deposition of more electroposifve metal （molybdenum or tungsten）, deposition of the second component （silicon） on the surface of metal deposited previously, and reaction diffusion of silicon into the deep of the metal-salt ＂pear＂ with the formation of silicide phases of different compositions up to the higher silicides. In contrast, during the electrodeposition of chromium silicides, one of the components （chromium） is deposited not in elemental form, but in oxide form, and the other （silicon） acts as a reducing agent for this oxide to form binary compounds. Duration of the synthesis first stage （deposition of refractory metal or of its oxide） depends on the refractory metal compound content in the system and on the cathode current density. Synthesis of silicides is possible due to retention of powders of molybdenum （tungsten） or chromium oxide at the cathode without scaling. Optimal values of concentrations ratio, current density, temperature, and duration of electrosynthesis were found. Phase composition of products were obtained, as well as their chemical and thermal stability, were studied.

Differentiation of wild boar and domestic pig populations based on the frequency of chromosomes carrying endogenous retroviruses

Analysis of the frequencies of chromosomes carrying various classes of porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERvs) and combinations of these classes was performed in the swine species Sus scrofa L. by using maps constructed in two principal component coordinates. Four population clusters can be recognized in the maps. Cluster 1 is formed by wild boars,cluster 2 by domestic meat breeds, cluster 3 by meat-and-lard (universal) breeds, and cluster 4 by miniature pigs. The maps indicate that modern domesticated swine meat breeds are the closest to the wild type. Meat-and-lard domestic swine breeds are more distant from wild boars, and miniature pigs are diverged the most. The maps showed that microevolution processes associated with PERv carriership frequency had two basic dimensions, or vectors: the vector of fat deposition variation and the “minus” selection vector (determination of commercial traits). Thus, PERvs may cause variation in pig physiology.

Acute liver injury induced by weight-loss herbal supplements

We report three cases of patients with acute liver injury induced by weight-loss herbal supplements. One patient took Hydroxycut while the other two took Herbalife supplements. Liver biopsies for all patients dem onstrated f indings consistent with drug-induced acute liver injury. To our knowledge, we are the fi rst instit ute to report acute liver injury from both of these two typ es of weight-loss herbal supplements together as a case series. The series emphasizes the importance of taking a cautious approach when consuming herbal supp lements for the purpose of weight loss.
