Plant diversity and phenological pattern in the montane wet temperate forests of the southern Western Ghats,India

Plants diversity and phenological pattern of the trees were monitored in a montane wet temperate forest （shola） in the Kukkal Forest, Palni hills of the southern Western Ghats, India. Twelve random plots were selected for sampling the vegetation. For phenological studies, twenty-three fleshy fruit trees were identified in the study area and 10 individuals of each species were selected to record the phenological events fortnightly between April 2002 and April 2004. The phenological events were divided into vegetative and reproductive phases. A total of 2279 individuals were inventoried which belong to 83 species, 68 genera and 40 families. About 30% of the species were endemic to the Western Ghats. The most dominant species （〉 1 cm dbh） was Psychotria nilgiriensis var. astephana （Rubiaceae）, which accounted for 12% of the total sampled individuals. Lauraceae was the dominant family accounting for 20% of the individuals. Fruiting peak occurred in July 2003 and least in June 2002. During the peak period, fruits of 85 individuals of six species were observed. Syzygium tamilnadensis, Ilex wightiana and Beilschmiedia wightii fruited only once during the two years of study. The number of fruiting species showed no correlation with rainfall （r = 0.26, p = 0.2）, while a correlation was found with fruit abundance （r = 0.40, p 〈 0.05）. The results indicate that the montane wet temperate forest is unique in their diversity and a conspicuous display in phenology.

Thermally insulating and fire-resistant carbon composite foams are prepared by consolidating natural cotton fibre dispersed in aqueous sucrose solution by filter-pressing followed by drying and *** compressive strength(5 kPa to 1.4 MPa)and thermal conductivity(0.069 to 0.185 W m^(-1)K^(-1))depend on the foam density(0.06 to 0.31 g cm^(-3))which is modulated by varying the sucrose solutions concentration(100 to 700 g L^(-1)).Partially flexible to the rigid transition of the carbon composite foams occurs at sucrose concentration above 200 g L^(-1).The tubular carbon fibre formed from cotton is welded at their contact points by the amorphous carbon produced from sucrose leading to partial flexibility at low sucrose concentration and advancement of fibre-to-fibre bonding area at higher sucrose concentration results in rigid *** porosity in the inter-fibre space and lumen of the carbonized cotton fibre contributes to the low thermal *** carbon composite foams prepared at a sucrose solution concentration of 500 g L^(-1) and above are amenable to machining using conventional machines and *** rigid carbon foams show EMI shielding effectiveness and specific shielding effectiveness in the ranges of 21.5 to 38.9 d B and 108-138 dB cm^(3) g^(-1),respectively.

Artificial Seed Production of Tylophora indica for Interim Storing and Swapping of Germplasm

Our research work demonstrates the single bead alginate-encapsulation, interim storing and conversion of Tylophora indica(Burm. Fil.) *** effective encapsulation of in vitro nodal segments [(4 ± 1) mm long], ensuing in sphere-shaped artificial seeds of similar morphology, was achieved through 75 mmol·L^(-1)calcium chloride(CaCl_2 · 2H_2O) plus 3%(w/v) Na-alginate with 93.3% conversion frequency. The earliest conversion(within 7 days of incubation) of artificial seeds occurred in half-strength liquid Murashige and Skoog medium. Among the three different temperature regimes [(5 ± 1) °C,(15 ± 1) °C, and(25 ± 1) °C], storage of artificial seeds at(15 ± 1) °C executed the highest frequency of conversion(90%) after 15 days of storage. Lengthier storage significantly reduced the conversion frequency of artificial seeds irrespective of storage temperature. Nevertheless, the conversion frequency after 30 days of storage at(15 ± 1) °C was recorded at 70% without further decline even following45 days of storage, which evidently suggests that lower temperature(15 ± 1) °C is apt for storage and subsequent conversion of T. indica artificial seeds. The present protocol could be expedient for short-term storing and swapping of T. indica germplasms between national and international laboratories.

Introduction:The cyclical process of hazard identification,risk assessment,risk mitigation,and review is a key step in developing a biorisk management(BRM)*** paper describes how this process was initiated in two laboratories in Pakistan using a unique model of blended ***:A training needs analysis showed that the staff had very little knowledge of BRM systems.A workshop using a unique blended model was conducted in which virtual and in-presence learning occurred *** workshop aimed to train the participants by applying two key concepts from the World Health Organization Laboratory Biosafety Manual 4th edition:1)the cyclical process of risk assessment and 2)mapping the core biorisk and establishing heightened control measures in the laboratories of the participants based on the risk *** scenarios and examples used in the training were from the participants’laboratory work ***:Prior to this project,no risk assessment was conducted in these *** the workshop,a risk assessment was performed for six work *** addition,seven core requirements and three heightened control measures were mapped,a biorisk officer was appointed,and a biosafety committee was ***,a biorisk manual,a biological waste management plan,an occupational health center,and a system for audits and inspections are being *** and conclusion:BRM training is not a one-time effort;it has to be strengthened to ensure the development and implementation of a comprehensive and sustainable BRM *** must be applicable to local settings and incremental,in a way that participants are not overloaded with information.

Integrating storm surge modeling with traffic data analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of hurricane evacuation

An integrated storm surge modeling and traffic analysis were conducted in this study to assess the effectiveness of hurricane evacuations through a case study of Hurricane *** Category 5 hurricane in 2017 caused a record evacuation with an estimated 6.8 million people relocating statewide in *** Advanced Circulation(ADCIRC)model was applied to simulate storm tides during the hurricane *** validations indicated that simulated pressures,winds,and storm surge compared well with *** simulated storm tides and winds were used to estimate the area affected by Hurricane *** showed that the storm surge and strong wind mainly affected coastal counties in south-west *** moderate storm tides(maximum about 2.5 m)and maximum wind speed about 115 mph were shown in both model simulations and Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA)post-hurricane assessment near the area of hurricane *** surges did not rise to the 100-year flood elevation *** maximum wind was much below the design wind speed of 150–170 mph(Category 5)as defined in Florida Building Code(FBC)for south Florida coastal *** with the total population of about 2.25 million in the six coastal counties affected by storm surge and Category 1–3 wind,the statewide evacuation of approximately 6.8 million people was found to be an over-evacuation due mainly to the uncertainty of hurricane path,which shifted from south-east to south-west *** uncertainty of hurricane tracks made it difficult to predict the appropriate storm surge inundation zone for *** data were used to analyze the evacuation traffic *** south-east Florida,evacuation traffic started 4 days before the hurricane’s ***,the hurricane path shifted and eventually landed in south-west Florida,which caused a high level of evacuation traffic in south-west ***-evacuation caused Evacuation Traffic Index(ETI)to increase to 200%above normal con

Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is an essential tool for detecting brain ***,identification of brain tumours in the early stages is a very complex task since MRI images are susceptible to noise and other environmental *** order to overcome these problems,a Gamma MAP denoised Strömberg wavelet segmentation based on a maximum entropy classifier(GMDSWS-MEC)model is developed for efficient tumour detection with high accuracy and low time *** GMDSWS-MEC model performs three steps,namely pre-processing,segmentation,and *** the GMDSWS-MEC model,the Gamma MAP filter performs the pre-processing task and achieves a significant increase in the peak signal-tonoise ratio by removing noisy artefacts from the input brain *** pre-processing,Strömberg wavelet transform segmentation is carried out to partition the pre-processed image into a number of blocks based on the features extracted from the ***,the maximum entropy classifier identifies and locates the tumour from the input image based on extracted features with high accuracy and minimal error *** a number of MRI images,experimental evaluation and comparison of the proposed model and existing methods is carried out on the basis of four metrics:peak signalto-noise ratio,tumour detection accuracy,error rate,and tumour detection time with respect to MRI image *** proposed model offers superior performance in terms of all four metrics.

Bioactivity guided isolation of mosquito larvicide from Piper longum

Objective:To isolate the larvicidal component from the fruits of Piper longum（***） against the filariasis vector,Culex quinquefasciatus（***）.Methods:Pulverized fruits of *** were subjected to soxhlet extraction using series of organic solvents of increasing *** the solvent extracts were verified for their larvicidal efficacy against 4th instar larvae of *** employing standard WHO *** fractionation through column chromatography lead to the isolation of a bioactive amide, pipyahyine from the petroleum ether ***:Petroleum ether extract was found to be the most active fraction among all the extracts tested with LC50 and LC90 being 1.03 and 2.04 ppm ***,pipyahyine,an isolated component of the same fraction was found to be even more effective than the parent extract in terms of LC50 being 0.58 and 1.88 ppm respectively. Conclusions:From the results,it is evident that *** can be considered as a powerful arsenal for the control of mosquito population.

Tricube Weighted Linear Regression and Interquartile for Cloud Infrastructural Resource Optimization

Cloud infrastructural resource optimization is the process of precisely selecting the allocating the correct resources either to a workload or *** workload execution,accuracy,and cost are accurately stabilized in opposition to the best possible framework in real-time,efficiency is *** addition,every workload or application required for the framework is characteristic and these essentials change over ***,the existing method was failed to ensure the high Quality of Service(QoS).In order to address this issue,a Tricube Weighted Linear Regression-based Inter Quartile(TWLR-IQ)for Cloud Infrastructural Resource Optimization is introduced.A Tricube Weighted Linear Regression is presented in the proposed method to estimate the resources(i.e.,CPU,RAM,and network bandwidth utilization)based on the usage history in each cloud ***,Inter Quartile Range is applied to efficiently predict the overload hosts for ensuring a smooth *** results show that our proposed method is better than the approach in Cloudsim under various performance *** results clearly showed that the proposed method can reduce the energy consumption and provide a high level of commitment with ensuring the minimum number of Virtual Machine(VM)Migrations as compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Evaluation of larvicidal activity of Pongamia pinnata extracts against three mosquito vectors

Objective:To evaluate the mosquito larvicidal activity of Pongamia pinnata(***)extracts against three mosquito ***:The methanol and hydroalcohol extracts of bark part of *** L were tested against fourth instar larvae of Culex quinqnefasciatus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles *** mortality was observed 24 h and 48 h after treatment,data was subjected to probit analysis to determine lethal concentration(LC_(50)and LC_(90))to kill 50 and 90 percent of treated larvae of tested ***:The larval mortality was found in both methanol and hydroalcohol extracts of *** against Culex quinquefascialus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi with LC_(50)values of 84.8,118.2 and 151.7 ppm;97.7,128.3 and 513 *** highest larval mortality was found in methanol extract of *** when comparable to the hydroalcohol ***:These results suggest that both methanol and hyrdoalcohol extracts have the potential to be used as an ideal ecofriendly approach for the control of disease *** could lead to isolation of novel natural larvicidal compounds.
