Safflower is an important, traditional, multipurpose oil crop. This was to investigate the effect of different salinity levels on morphological, physiological, biochemical and antioxidant response of two safflower cultivars (Carthamus tinctorius L. cultivar TSF1 and cultivar SM) differing in salt tolerance. Salinity stress (0.0%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% of NaCl) was induced to safflower plants after 19 days of vegetative growth. After 12 days of stress impositions, plants were harvested and analysed for various parameters. The results revealed that cultivar TSF1 showed maximum growth, dry weight, cell membrane stability and more water content in both root and leaf tissues at higher salinity levels than cultivar SM. Salt stress resulted an accumulation of more soluble sugars, amino acids, proline and glycine betaine at high salinity level confers the tolerance potential of cultivar TSF1 over cultivar SM. Salt stress induces more increase in the enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase and catalase in tolerant cultivar than sensitive one. The results indicate that each cultivar adopt specific strategy at distinct salinity level for resistance against salinity. The possible conclusion is that improved tolerance in cultivar TSF1 to salinity may be accomplished by better management of growth, physiological attributes and antioxidative defence mechanisms.

Degradation of Dyestuff Pollutant Sudan I Using Advanced Oxidation Process

Due to an increasing environmental pollution, a search for the cost effective treatment and disposal of the dyes from the textile effluents is getting more and more importance. Oxidation and reduction processes play important roles in the degradation treatments of the azo dyes. The latter process is more effective and in consequence its mechanism is also better understood. The mechanism of the oxidation processes, the intermediates involved in these reactions and their role in the effectiveness of the oxidative degradation of the azo dyes, viz, phenyl azo b-naphthol (PAN), Sudan I. On exposure to sunlight at 2 1/2 hours for various samples in different concentrations of PAN mixed with Fenton reagent, when the reactive intermediate?reacted with the colour, the pH vs. absorbance generally showed significant degradation in between pH 5 and 6. The results were compared with the same samples on exposure to uv-light of 254 nm and irradiated at 20 minutes. The degradation occurred in samples of relatively high concentrations, viz, 10-3 and 5 × 10-4 mol· dm-3 at near neutral pH 6 whereas. Low concentration samples such as 10-4 and 5 × 10-5 mol·dm-3 showed degradation towards more acidic range of pH 2 to 4. In advanced oxidation process (AOP), generally reactive, strongly oxidizing ·OH radicals play a main role in destruction of the dye molecules. The proposed mechanisms and the rate coefficients for the reactions of ·OH intermediates with the dye molecules and with model compounds are summarized.

Objective:To evaluate the antimicrobial potential of partially purified leaf,bark and root extracts obtained from two mangrove species Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza from South Andaman against clinical bacterial and fungal ***:Roots,bark and leaves were dried in the shade and subjected to organic solvent *** and antifungal activities were performed by agar well diffusion *** purified extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography for compound ***:Results of the partially purified extracts were analyzed by column *** collected by high performance liquid chromatography exhibited a wide range of antimicrobial activities against several bacterial and fungal *** pathogen Aspergillus niger(25 mm)was found to be more sensitive against the mangrove extracts as compared with Klebsiella pneumoniae(23 mm),Escherichia coli,Shigella flexneri,Salmonella typhi(22 mm).Active fractions were identified as tannin compounds based on the peaks obtained by high performance liquid ***:Present findings reveal that mangrove bark,roots,and leaves contain valuable metabolites,which have significant importance in the pharmacological ***,this study suggests that these two mangrove plants Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza are potential candidates for discovering antimicrobial compounds against clinical pathogens.

The effect of meta-Topolin (mT) was assessed to develop a reliable protocol for efficient plant regeneration of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) cv. NARI-H-15. For micropropagation, 7 - 9 days old shoot-tip explants cultured on MS basal medium supplemented with 3.0 mg/L meta-Topolin (mT) + 0.5 mg/L CPPU showed 97.7% adventitious shoot formation (42.4 shootlets) than node after 45 days of culture. For organogenesis, the seedling explants of immature leaf cultured on 1.5 mg/L CPPU or 1.5 mg/L NAA fortified medium produced high amount of callus than cotyledon and stem calli after 60 days of culture. However, MS basal medium fortified with 4.0 mg/L mT + 1.5 mg/L CPPU was found beneficial to stimulate 100% organogenic response (74.7 shootlets) from immature leaf calli than cotyledon and stem derived calli after 45 days of culture. The healthy plantlets obtained from micropropagation and organogenesis process cultured on 1/4 MS basal salts, 1.5% sucrose (w/v) and 0.8% agar (w/v) medium supplemented with NAA (1.5 mg/L) and mT (0.1 mg/L) produced maximum of 96% (12.8 rootlets) and 84% (7.3 rootlets) adventitious rooting, respectively than mT and CPPU tested medium. However, maximum of 67% and 42% survival rate was noticed when in vitro raised plants from micropropagation and organogenesis were hardened in pots containing soil mix and maintained under green house condition. This optimized regeneration protocol might be helpful in regeneration of new genotypes and cultivars of safflower to improve agronomic traits through in vitro selection process and Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation system.

Background: To determine the effect of high dose tranexamic acid in decreasing immediate postoperative bleeding in children less than ten kilo body weight after complex cardiac surgery and also to evaluate the safety of high dose in small children. Methods: Between January-December 2015, 25 children weighing less than ten kilogram body weight underwent complex cardiac surgery for cyanotic congenital heart disease. All children were given dose of 100 mg/kg tranexamic acid at the time of anaesthetic induction and also 100 mg/kg into the CPB prime. The Median age and weight was 80 days (3 - 365) and 4.69 kg (2.4 - 7.8) respectively. The Median preoperative Hb was 10 g/dl (9.6 - 19.5 g/dl). Cardiac surgery included total intracardiac repair for TOF in 10 pts (40%), TAPVC repair in 6 (24%), arterial switch operation in 6 pts (24%), BD glenn in 1, repair of DORV with VSD in 1 and VSD closure with scimitar vein reimplantation in 1 pt. Median CPB time was 127 minutes (97 - 343) and cross clamp time was 99 (67 - 200) minutes. Moderate to deep hypothermia was maintained in all with median temperature of 24°C (18 - 32). Three children (12%) had elective open chest in view of anticipated bleeding. Results: The Median postoperative drainage was 127 ml, (range 10 - 1250 ml). The median postoperative use of whole blood was 95 ml (range 10 - 275), packed cell was 187 ml (range 50 - 400 ml), frozen plasma was 88 ml (range 30 - 170), platelet concentrate was 57 ml, (range 10 - 100 ml) and cryoprecipitate was median 47.5 ml, (range 30 - 80 ml). No neurological dysfunction and renal dysfunction has been observed in any of the pts. Out of 4 mortalities (16%), only one was attributed to bleeding (4%) due to usage of ECMO. No late neurological or renal dysfunction has been observed in remaining 21 pts on follow up. Conclusion: High dose Tranexamic acid can be safely used in small children during complex cardiac surgery with significant reduction in postoperative bleeding and blood product

Optical, Structural and Morphological Properties of Photocatalytic ZnO Thin Films Deposited by Pray Pyrolysis Technique

Photocatalytic ZnO thin films have been deposited onto glass substrate by spray pyrolysis technique. The sprayed solution consists of 0.1 M of zinc acetate dihydrate dissolved in double distilled water and sprays onto ultrasonically cleaned glass substrates maintained at 350°C, through an air-atomizing nozzle. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDX and UV-VIS spectrophotometer were applied to describe the structural, morphological, compositional and optical properties of ZnO catalyst. XRD analysis confirms that the films were found to be single phase hexagonal wurtzite structure. The SEM micrograph of the films is shown highly uniform, crack free and found to be fiber like structures. The optical transmittance spectra of the ZnO thin films were found to be transparent to visible light and the average optical transmittance was greater than 85%. The direct optical band gap energy values of the films shift towards the lower energy as a consequence of the thermal annealing. The Urbach energy of the films was found to increase with annealing temperature. The refractive index of the films was calculated and the refractive index dispersion curve of the films obeys the single oscillator model. The values of oscillatory energy Eo, dispersion energy Ed, and static dielectric constant εs for the ZnO thin films were determined. The films were evaluated for their ability to degrade methylene blue. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model was used to interpret quantitatively the observed kinetic experimental result. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO thin films was enhanced by annealing temperature.
