Sevoflurane Preconditioning and Total Knee Arthroplasty Bleeding: Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a highly complex and effective surgery even though its perioperative bleeding may increase the need for blood transfusion and its associated infection risk, cardiovascular overload, increased costs, and mortality. As the tourniquet reduces intraoperative bleeding, it may be associated with postoperative bleeding, venous thrombosis, and distal ischemia. The reperfusion may trigger a local and systemic inflammatory response. Anesthetic preconditioning (APC) with sevoflurane minimizes ischemia-reperfusion syndrome (IRS). This study evaluated the effects of APC with sevoflurane on perioperative bleeding in TKA. methods: We allocated 30 patients into two groups: a sevo group (sevoflurane 2% for 15 minutes before the tourniquet) and a control group (propofol infusion). Laboratory tests were collected right before the tourniquet (LAB PRE, in the operating room) and after its release at four moments: LAB POST (immediately after), LAB 2 (two hours after), LAB 12 (12 hours after), and LAB 24 (24 hours after). The volume of the suction drain was measured at one, two, 12, and 24 hours after the end of the surgery. Antifibrinolytics were not administered. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in bleeding-related variables, such as drained volume and hemoglobin and hematocrit measurements. Drainage volume was higher in the first two hours after the procedure, while hematocrit decreased pre- to postoperatively and between two and 12 hours post-procedure. Conclusion: Sevoflurane as an anesthetic preconditioning did not reduce postoperative bleeding in TKA surgery.

COSmO-Skymed is a constellation of four X-band high-resolution radar satellites with a minimum revisit period of 12 *** satellites can obtain ascending and descending synthetic aperture radar(SAR)images with very similar periods for use in the three-dimensional(3D)inversion of glacier *** this paper,based on ascending and descending COSmO-Skymed data acquired at nearly the same time,the surface velocity of the Yiga Glacier,located in the Jiali County,Tibet,China,is estimated in four directions using an offset tracking technique during the periods of 16 January to 3 February 2017 and 1 February to 19 February *** the geometrical relationships between the measurements and the SAR images,the least square method is used to retrieve the 3D components of the glacier surface velocity in the eastward,northward and upward *** results show that applying the offset tracking technique to COSmO-Skymed images can be used to derive the true 3D velocity of a glacier’s *** the two periods,the Yiga Glacier had a stable velocity,and the maximum surface velocity,2.4 m/d,was observed in the middle portion of the glacier,which corresponds to the location of the steepest slope.

Riverscape connectivity is a critically important component determining the ecological condition of lotic *** evaluated changes in fish assemblages caused by the loss of connectivity by mine tailings storage dams(TSDs),hypothesizing that headwater fish assemblages are restructured by TSDs located downstream,even though the upstream habitats are not *** used standard methods to collect fish in 24 first to third order sites,with half draining to TSDs(dammed)and the other half free from this impact(undammed).To identify differences between treatments,we used PERmANOVA to test both environmental variables and ichthyofauna composition(Bray-Curtis similarity index)and evaluated the biological metrics that most influenced assemblage composition *** expected,we observed no difference between treatments for environmental variables,but we did observe differences in fish assemblage *** also observed five metrics with lower values in dammed streams(richness and abundance of intolerant species,siluriform richness,and abundance of Pareiorhaphis *** and Trichomycterus brasiliensis)and two metrics with higher values in dammed streams(perciform richness and abundance of Oligosarcus argenteus).We believe these changes resulted from of stream fragmentation by TSDs,in addition to source-sink mechanisms and conclude that mine TSDs located downstream change headwater fish assemblages,an impact often neglected in biomonitoring and bioassessment studies.

A thrombin-like serine protease, jararassin-I, was isolated from the venom of Bothrops jararaca. The protein was obtained in high yield and purity by a single chromatographic step using the affinity resin Benzamidine-Sepharose CL-6B. SDS-PAGE and dynamic light scattering analyses indicated that the molecular mass of the enzyme was about 30 kD. The enzyme possessed fibrinogenolytic and coagulant activities. The jararassin-I degraded the Bβ chain of fibrinogen while theAα chain and γ chain were unchanged. Proteases inhibitors, PmSF and benzamidine inhibited the coagulant activity. These results showed jararassin- I is a serine protease similar to coagulating thrombin-like snake venom proteases, but it specifically cleaves Bβ chain of bovine fibrinogen. Single crystals of enzyme were obtained (0.2 mm×0.2 mm×0.2 mm) and used for X-ray diffraction experiments.

Extrahepatic right hepatic duct diverticulum: a rare entity

BACKGROUND:Douglas described choledochal cysts in 1852 and Todani proposed an anatomy-based classification in 1977. The classification is the most extensively used,but does not include some rare *** present a case of hepatic duct diverticulum,one of the variations,and discuss its diagnosis and treatment. mETHODS:A 57-year-old woman presented with upper abdominal pain and discomfort associated with nausea and *** was finally diagnosed with cholelithiasis and right hepatic duct diverticulum. RESULT:The patient underwent resection of the hepatic duct diverticulum and cholecystectomy,and was asymptomatic 26 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS:Hepatic duct diverticulum is a rare form of choledochal cyst,not included in Todani’s classification. Todani’s classification including this and other uncommon variations of choledochal cysts must be *** best diagnostic imaging methods and treatment for choledochal cysts must be defined.

Nowadays,food security is a global concern and a great scientific ***-industrial by-products can be used as potential ingredients of innovative food products,contributing to solve this societal ***-products of high specialty oils processing,for instance,have remarkable nutritional and organoleptic ***,the partially delipidified almond flour(PDAF)remaining from almond oil extraction,was used as an alternative ingredient in a highly appreciated almond-based cookie(“almendrados”).For comparison purposes,four different“almendrados”formulations(one industrial,two with PDAF,and one with whole almond flour),were compared regarding nutritional composition,vitamin E and fatty acids *** assess the cookie sensory properties,seventy-four consumers evaluated“appearance”,“taste”,“sweetness”,“crunchiness”,“hardness”,“overall quality”using adequate hedonic *** and protein levels showed significant differences among industrial and the other three *** with PDAF presented similar tocopherols and fatty acids to the traditional(more expensive)formulation,besides reaching the highest scores on“appearance”,“sweetness”,“hardness”,“overall quality”and“buying predisposition”***,the incorporation of PDAF might represent an effective way of adding value to an industrial by-product,while providing a pleasant novel cookie formulation.

用自发熔化渗透法制备高TiC含量 (～ 75vol% )的TiC/NiAl复合材料 ,研究了渗透温度和渗透时间对TiC/NiAl复合材料微观组织形成、硬度及断裂性能的影响。采用XRD和TEm /EDS分析了复合材料的相组成、微观结构和NiAl相与TiC颗粒在高温渗透过程中的互溶情况。结果表明 :自发熔渗法是制备致密的TiC/NiAl复合材料的有效方法 ,适当提高渗透温度 ,可大大缩短渗透时间。在完成渗透获得致密组织的前提下 ,渗透温度和渗透时间对TiC/NiAl复合材料的硬度及断裂韧性无显著影响。NiAl相和TiC颗粒结合良好 ,是渗透后复合物的仅有组成相。TiC少量地溶于NiAl,溶解度随渗透时间增长而增大 ,且在TiC颗粒外层 ,发现有少量的Al和微量的Ni。

How to measure Sports Brand Equity： A Proposal for Football Industry

As in many other industries, strong brands play an important role in football industry inducing sales for the clubs that own it. Brands financial values are not quantified in balance sheets, so quantifying them provides important financial data. This is the research topic. The research questions are：（i） How is the importance of the brand in the revenues of football clubs and （ii） what is the financial value of the brands Futebol Clube do Porto （FCP）, Sport Lisboa e Benfica （SLB）, and e Sporting Clube de Portugal （SCP）？ This investigation was based on an adaptation of the inter brand equity model. This model considers equity as the economic value generated as net profit of the company, which can be apportioned to the brand. The data was collected from the financial maps of these three clubs between 2005/2006 and 2009/2010 seasons. In order to adapt the model to the football industry, a panel of five experts of professional football club managers was questioned. These experts claim that in football industry, brand management contributes with 16% of the economic value, sport management with 63%, financial management with 16%, and other factors with 5%. The conclusion is that FCP has the most valuable brand, with about 54.5 m , followed by SLB with about 51.6 m , and finally by SCP with about 39.5 m.
