Local renin angiotensin system and sperm DNA fragmentation

The renin angiotensin system(RAs)appears to influence male fertility at multiple *** this work,we analyzed the relationship between the RAs and DNA *** male volunteers were divided into two groups(25 each):control(DNA fragmentation≤20%)and pathological(DNA fragmentation>20%)*** of five peptidases controlling RAs were measured fluorometrically:prolyl endopeptidase(which converts angiotensin[A]I and A II to A 1–7),neutral endopeptidase(NEP/CD10:A I to A 1–7),aminopeptidase N(APN/CD13:A III to A IV),aminopeptidase A(A II to A III)and aminopeptidase B(A III to A IV).Angiotensin-converting enzyme(A I to A II),APN/CD13 and NEP/CD10 were also assessed by semiquantitative cytometry and quantitative flow cytometry assays,as were the receptors of all RAs components:A II receptor type 1(AT1R),A II receptor type 2(AT2R),A IV receptor(AT4R or insulin-regulated aminopeptidase[IRAP]),(pro)renin receptor(PRR)and A 1–7 receptor or Mas receptor(MasR)None of the enzymes that regulate levels of RAs components,except for APN/CD13(decrease in fragmented cells),showed significant differences between both *** of RAs receptors revealed no significant differences in immunolabeling patterns between normozoospermic and fragmented *** of AT1R(94.3%normozoospermic vs 84.1%fragmented),AT4R(96.2%vs 95.3%)and MasR(97.4%vs 87.2%)was similar between the ***2R(87.4%normozoospermic vs 63.1%fragmented)and PRR(96.4%vs 48.2%)were higher in non-fragmented *** findings suggest that fragmented DNA spermatozoa have a lower capacity to respond to bioactive RAs peptides.

Neoadjuvant treatment of esophageal cancer

The management of esophageal cancer has been evolving over the past 30 years. In the United states, multimodality treatment combining chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT) prior to surgical resection has come to be accepted by many as the standard of care, although debate about its overall effect on survival still exists, and rightfully so. Despite recent improvements in detection and treatment, the overall survival of patients with esophageal cancer remains lower than most solid tumors, which highlights why further advances are so desperately needed. The aim of this article is to provide a complete review of the history of esophageal cancer treatment with the addition of chemotherapy, RT, and more recently, targeted agents to the surgical management of resectable disease.

An experimental investigation of properties of polyethylene reinforced with Al powders

Mechanical and physical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, shore D hardness, melt flow rate (MFR), and electrical and thermal conductivities of composites with high density polyethylene matrix reinforced with Al powders were investigated experimentally. Measurements of the mechanical and physical properties were performed up to a reinforcing component concentration of 30% volume Al powder and compared with mathematical models from the literature. The obtained results have shown that experimental data were in good agreement with theoretical data. The ultimate tensile strength (UTs) and elongation at break decreased with increasing Al powder content, which was attributed to the intro-duction of discontinuities in the polymer structure, and modulus of elasticity increased with increasing Al content. The composite preparation conditions allowed the formation of a random distribution of metallic particles in the polymer matrix volume for system high density polyethylene-Al (HDPE-Al). There was a cluster formation of Al particles at higher Al contents in the polymer matrix. Electrical and thermal conductivity values of HDPE-Al composites were higher than pure HDPE values.

Early detection of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is a low-incident but highly mortal disease. It accounts for only 3% of estimated new cancer cases each year but is currently the fourth common cause of cancer mortality. By 2030, it is expected to be the 2nd leading cause of cancer death. There is a clear need to diagnose and classify pancreatic cancer at earlier stages in order to give patients the best chance at a definitive cure through surgery. Three precursor lesions that distinctly lead to pancreatic adenocarcinoma have been identified, and we have increasing understanding the non-genetic and genetic risk factors for the disease. With increased understanding about the risk factors, the familial patters, and associated accumulation of genetic mutations involved in pancreatic cancer, we know that there are mutations that occur early in the development of pancreatic cancer and that improved genetic risk-based strategies in screening for pancreatic cancer may be possible and successful at saving or prolonging lives. The remaining challenge is that current standards for diagnosing pancreatic cancer remain too invasive and too costly for widespread screening for pancreatic cancer. Furthermore, the promises of noninvasive methods of detection such as blood, saliva, and stool remain underdeveloped or lack robust testing. However, significant progress has been made, and we are drawing closer to a strategy for the screening and early detection of pancreatic cancer.

Postprandial dyslipidemia in insulin resistant states in adolescent populations

Obesity and the metabolic syndrome are becoming increasingly prevalent not only in adults,but also in *** metabolic syndrome,a complex cluster of metabolic abnormalities,increases one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease(CVD).Dyslipidemia,a key component of the metabolic syndrome,is highly associated with insulin resistance and contributes to increased CVD *** has traditionally been assessed using a fasting lipid profile [*** triglycerides,total cholesterol,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)].However,the postprandial state predominates over the course of a day and non-fasting triglycerides independently predict CVD *** insulin resistant states,the intestine overproduces triglyceride-rich lipoprotein(TRL) particles,termed chylomicrons(CMs),following ingestion of a fat-containing meal,as well as in the fasting *** with elevated hepatic TRLs(***-low density lipoproteins),CMs contribute to remnant lipoprotein accumulation,small dense LDL particles,and reduced HDL-C,which collectively increase CVD *** the early genesis of atherosclerosis and physiological metabolic changes during adolescence,studying postprandial dyslipidemia in the adolescent population is an important area of *** dyslipidemia in the pediatric population poses a significant public health concern,warranting a better understanding of its pathogenesis and association with insulin resistance and *** review discusses the metabolic syndrome,focusing on the link between insulin resistance,postprandial dyslipidemia,and CVD ***,the clinical significance and functional assessment of postprandial dyslipidemia,specifically in the adolescent population,is discussed in more detail.

Antilocalization sensing of interactions between two-dimensional electrons and surface species

We apply antilocalization measurements to experimentally study the interactions and exchange between InAs surface accumulation electrons and local magnetic moments of the rare earth ions sm3?,Gd3?,Ho3?,and Dy3?,of the transition metal ions Ni2?,Co2?,and Fe3?,and of Fe3O4nanoparticles and Fe3?-phthalocyanine deposited on the *** influence of the deposited species on the surface electrons is observed through the changes in the spin–orbit scattering and magnetic spin-flip scattering rates,which carry information about magnetic *** indicate a temperature-dependent magnetic spin-flip scattering for Ho3?,Dy3?,Ni2?,and Co2?.Concerning the spin–orbit scattering rate,we observe an increase,except for the cases of Ni2?,Fe3?,Fe3O4nanoparticles and Fe3?-*** also observe an increase in sO scattering in another system where we study the interactions of Au nanoparticles and ferromagnetic Co0.6Fe0.4nanopillars and an In0.53Ga0.47As quantum *** results are analyzed and compared to theoretical *** method provides a controlled way to probe the quantum properties of two-dimensional electron systems,either on the surface of InAs or in a quantum well.

Plant isoprenoids(also known as terpenes or terpenoids)are a wide family of primary and secondary metabolites with multiple *** particular,most photosynthesis-related isoprenoids(including carotenoids and chlorophylls)as well as diterpenes and polyterpenes derive from geranylgeranyl diphosphate(GGPP)produced by GGPP synthase(GGPPs)enzymes in several cell *** genomes typically harbor multiple copies of differentially expressed genes encoding GGPPs-like *** sequence comparisons allow to identify potential GGPPs candidates,experimental evidence is required to ascertain their enzymatic activity and biologi cal ***,functional analyses of the full set of potential GGPPs paralogs are only available for a handful of plant *** we review our current knowledge on the GGPPs families of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and the crop species rice(0ryza sativa),pepper(Capsicum annuum)and tomato(solanum lycopersicum).The results indicate that a major determinant of the biological role of particular GGPPs paralogs is the expression profile of the corresponding genes even though specific interactions with other proteins(including GGPP-consuming enzymes)might also contribute to *** some species,however,a single GGPPs isoforms appears to be responsible for the production of most if not all GGPP required for cell *** the mechanisms regulating GGPPs activity in particular cell compartments,tissues,organs and plant species will be very useful for future metabolic engineering approaches aimed to manipulate the accumulation of particular GGPP-derived products of interest without negatively impacting the levels of other isoprenoids required to sustain essential cell functions.

Mycelium as a self-growing biobased material for the fabrication of single-layer masks

Disposable face masks are an essential piece of personal protective equipment for workers in medical facilities,laboratories,and the general public to prevent the spread of illnesses and/or ***-19 resulted in an uptick in the usage and production of face masks,exacerbating issues related to the waste and recycling of these ***,face masks are derived from petrochemicals,such as melt-blown or spunbound *** such,there is a need to find sustainable mask materials that can maintain or improve the performance of petrochemical *** paper explores an alternative mask material that utilizes fungal mycelium as self-growing filaments to enhance the efficiency of individual polypropylene mask *** engineering the growth pattern and time,breathability and filtration efficiency was optimized such that one layer of the mycelium-modified mask could replace all three layers of the traditional three-layer ***,it was found that the mycelium-modified mask exhibits asymmetric hydrophobicity,with super-hydrophobicity at the composite-air interface and lower hydrophobicity at the composite-medium *** property can improve the performance of the modified mask by protecting the mask from external liquids without trapping water vapor from the user’s *** findings from this study can provide a basis for further development of mycelium to create sustainable filtration materials with enhanced functionality.

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy: Risk factors, diagnosis and treatment
